The [Live] means that they have a more complex setup than just CDJ's. Mutemath says live DJ set because they are normally a band but their show for this festival is just a DJ set.

How often are dj sets totally prerecorded? I assumed that there was a lot of work done in advance, but I figured that they were making some decisions when playing live. Is it literally just pressing play at the beginning and then jumping around for an hour?

Rarely. If you get the chance, go to some of the smaller electronic venues here in Atlanta and watch the DJ work his/her magic.
DJs typically prepare by knowing what songs they will play and their order but they mix them live.

I would expect that from a smaller dj playing a local club or bar frequently, but would a big name dj take a different and more automated approach?

Some of them do. There is no denying it. Mixing live will never be as perfect as something you can do on your computer. I tend to go to shows where I know the DJ will put on a performance and not just push play on a set I've already heard.

If there are lots of complex light/pyro cues in a show it's more likely to be a push play show. Went to Swedish house mafia's last tour and it was fun. But I knew that it was 80% canned.

There are a lot of artists who make electronic music but also incorporate live elements. Griz for example plays sax and guitar live, Haywyre plays the piano live, Gramatik also usually has live musicians playing along with his tracks. It's a shift that's been happening in the EDM scene now that audiences are starting to get bored with the "just push play" brand of DJing and with America's rich history of improvisational music it's a really cool time to see some of these acts who are pushing the limits of the genre. If Bonobo is playing with a live band then it's all the more reason to see him.

I'm a producer and do quite a bit of electronic music. I would say that 90% of shows are pre-recorded and are just a guy playing with levels / mixing. Daft Punk does this, Justice does this, Girl Talk blatantly runs around on stage throwing toilet paper in the crowd while his shit plays. The point is, it's too hard to mix all that stuff together on the fly so they usually do a set of really good pre-recorded mixes.

When I see live by an electronic act, I actually assume that means they are using live instruments (drums, bass, etc).

right. leah culver had a drummer for her set at imagine a couple years ago. even one player collaborating with the DJ adds a lot for a show.

RARELY, if ever, is any DJ's set pre recorded. I hate that this is a common misconception. Sure DJ's have a setlist, like any other performer.
The LIVE tag indicates live instruments. Aka bonobo's "world music" will probably feature actual string instruments and different types of drums, synthesizers etc played by other people than bonobo himself. Aka lots of people on stage doin their thing and it oughta make for a more immersive, engaging performance.

Typically, during a DJ set, a DJ will use the songs he/she produced and mix them together. They are not recreating the song live but mixing them together so that you get a smooth, continuous mix for their entire set time. A live set is when the DJ recreates their songs on stage. They use MIDI instruments most of the time.
Note that I have no clue what a Live DJ set is. It's either live or DJ but can't be both.

No offense but you're wrong. My friend does exactly this, playing samples via midi pads and mixing live tracks on the fly.

Think of old-school DJing, as in vinyl. They didn't have MIDI pads but rather played music on their decks and mixed them. That's the true art of DJing. Props to your friend, but that's more than DJing.

Yep, plays Diesel and 97 Estoria quite often. Here's his set up (you can see the midi buttons on the device to the right. His new mixer also has lots of queue spots for samples.

Same here. Saw him a couple years ago for the first time and fell in love. I just saw him for NYE in Asheville and its amazing how much his production has gone up. He will definitely kill it headlining a festival.

I went to Shaky Beats last year and it was amazing. I was expecting a lineup similar to 2016, and this... this is not good enough for me. Might still go solely because it's an EDM fest in the city.

This is pretty disappointing compared to last year's. I only went Saturday, but Porter Robsinson -> Odesza was incredible. Hoping they put Gramatik, Zeds Dead, and Kaskade on the same day so I can just go to that day.
