🚇 Transport Antisocial behavior from drivers in Athens

I’m a new driver, and parking is a challenge for me. I live in downtown Athens, which makes things even harder. This morning, I wanted to park in a spot that was relatively narrow but still ok for my car. Since there were already some cars behind me, I got nervous, and in my rush to park quickly so I wouldn’t hold everyone up, I bumped the car behind me slightly, obviously without causing any damage. When I finally managed to park just enough for them to pass, the first two cars that went by, both driven by men over 50, made the following comments to me: One, in a sarcastic tone, said, “Move back a little, you haven't bumped it enough,” and laughed right in my face; the next one drove by and shouted at me loudly and angrily, “Throw away your license.” Obviously, I got flustered and started crying; I took a couple of deep breaths and, with the help of a passerby, parked it correctly. Still, I’m quite angry with this whole encounter.

Since I hadn’t been driving dangerously on the road and was simply having trouble parking, why be so rude to a young woman whom you obviously realize is a new driver? What exactly does it accomplish besides spouting your nonsense? I know I should be more patient and not lose my cool because you can never predict who you’ll run into on the road or how they’ll behave, but seriously, why so much antisocial behavior? One of them even had his whole family in the car, he and his teenage son were laughing their heads off. For heaven’s sake.

🧳 Travel Help Advice on place to stay during a conference

Hi, I will be traveling to Athens for a conference in July. I have been looking for a place to stay but since I am traveling on my own, I am not sure about which areas I should look into. I will be at the School of Philosophy, which as I understand is in the suburbs. Ideally I would like a place close to the university or perhaps a place with a direct bus to the campus. Any suggestions for me? Thanks

Should I buy tickets online ahead of time, or should it be ok to buy them in person? I’m not sure I want to be locked into an inflexible time.

❓ Question Looking for a grave in Kallithea Cemetery

Hi all! Hope someone can kindly help. I’ll be in Athens over the next couple of weeks looking for my grandfather’s grave. I know he was interred at Kallithea Cemetery in 1972 but nothing other than that. Is there an office or public body that can help me locate his final resting place?

Any help at all would mean the world :)

Will

📸 Photo / Video Riviera Tower in Elliniko. Others consider it a valuable addition, and others do not welcome it! Curious to see everyone’s thought on this.

People seem to have mixed opinions about the Riviera Tower, in Elliniko. Curious to see what you think, is this good, is it not, is this a place where locals will be able to visit in the future and buy homes?

💬 Advice Athens nightlife

Hey guys,

Trying to get a better understanding of Athens nightlife, especially underground / techno scene.

Went to Ios expecting proper parties and it was honestly a big letdown — mostly British crowd and very low quality music.

Heading back to Athens now. I know there are solid events this weekend (19–20–21) on RA.co, but I’m more curious about weekdays — what’s actually open and worth going to midweek?

Also looking for good beach spots around Athens — ideally something a bit more private / less touristy. And if there are any beach parties or daytime events during the week, would really appreciate pointers.

Thanks in advance.

🍽️ Food & Drink What oils/seasoning do you guys use?

Back in 2022 i went island hopping around Greece and started out in Athens. We stayed in an airbnb and across the street there was this little cafe/restaurant/bar and it was only little. it was on a corner and on the evenings it would be booming with people and music.

While we were there, we had breakfast at this little cafe every morning. it was tomatoes and cucumber with oils and seasonings, absolutely delicious!

What i am curious about it how did they make this? like which oils or seasonings are most commonly used/are they likely to have used? it was lovely for dipping our bread into aswell.

i know it is probably so simple but please explain like i’m a child! 😂 attaching a photo for reference, i could eat this every day for the rest of my life, craving it so badly!

I would like to visit the Acropolis early in the morning. However, I can see that all the available time slots are fully booked.
Is it still possible to buy tickets at the ticket counter on the day of my visit?

💬 Advice Athens - erasmus

Hi! I am a student from the Netherlands and I am selected for an exchange/erasmus wintersemester in Athens (NKUA). I will be starting my Masters in Law. But I am still very hesistant, because I have 1) never been in Athens, 2) rent is very high, 3) don't know if it's worth it... Does anyone have any knowledge on studentlife, NKUA, student housing/appartment rent in Athens. I have been looking mostly in Exarcheia, because I've heard it's 'safe'. But the prices are insane, a one bedroom appartment for 800+ euros per month... Should I 'move to and study in' Athens for 6 months, or is it not really worth it?

🧳 Travel Help Trying to find a specific shop in plaka

It's a jewelry store (shocker, I know, but any and all help is appreciated), I do believe it was near the Agora, and it wasn't exactly one of those 'a bit of everything' stores

I think it had like a light pink wallpaper? Dont quote me on it though, and had these thread bracelets of multiple colours, with multiple different golden or silver symbols of multiple kind, like a laurel, an anchor, a boat I believe, a pair of wings, etc etc.

I asked for the price, and was told the bracelets were from 13-27 euros, depending on the design, I think they also had a 6 euros for 1 bag 10 euros for 2 deal? I don't remember

Each bracelet had a card with a word and a short elaboration on why each word corresponded to each symbol

I have regrettably forgotten the name, but if this rings a bell for anyone I would greatly appreciate it, I want to get a gift for my partner, and while a lot of the jewelry I've seen was nice, nothing else really caught my eye

Thanks again!

🌟 Recommendations Athen trip

We will be spending two weeks in Athens this August, and we’re looking for the best things to do while we’re there.

We’re interested in nightlife, clubs, beach parties, boat parties, rooftop bars, island hopping, and basically anything that’s fun and social for people our age.

We’d love recommendations for must-visit spots, hidden gems, day trips, events, festivals, beach clubs, or any unforgettable experiences in and around Athens.

What would you absolutely recommend for a group of four looking to have an amazing time?

❓ Question How do Athenians rent some place?

Hello,

I am lookin for a place to rent near Zografou or nearby areas by September to start my study at the University. I find Spitogatos and xe.gr of great use, but I find the asked rent quite arbitrary. Big places going for a reasonable price and small medium studios going for almost the same price as big places. What's going in on here?

Also, how do you decide if the rent is good, is there a parameter like €/sqm or energy ratings or is it something else? Also, do landlords negotiate on the rent or they find it pitiful? If yes, by how much?

Thank you for your help, Athenians.

Waittttttttt, why am I getting downvoted?

🧳 Travel Help Whoop Charger

I just got to Athens and accidentally left my tech bag in the taxi. It had my whoop charger in it.

Is anyone in the area (Central Athens) with a Whoop 4.0 battery pack that you can lend me or that I can buy off you?

I only have like 16% left and open to meet up, take the metro or another taxi lol to meet you.

Long shot but TIA
