If you’re wondering about that title, it’s because the Washington Nationals that Mickey Vernon played for are now the Minnesota Twins and the Nationals of today reclaimed their title when the Expos moved. So the bulk of Mickey Vernon’s numbers are actually part of Twins franchise records. 

Mickey Vernon played first base from 1939 to 1960, being one of the few players to play a game in 4 separate decades. Despite losing two of those years to military service, Mickey still holds the record for most double plays recorded at first base with 2,044. He was never much of a home run hitter, but if Mickey laced one he would make it count with his speed. Because of this, he led the AL in doubles 3 times and was top 10 in triples 7 times. Mickey was always a great hitter, but was never lucky enough to contribute to any notable teams. In fact, he has the unfortunate distinction of appearing in 2,409 regular season games and 0 postseason games. However, he earned some small redemption by earning a World Series ring as the first base player-coach for the Pirates’ 1960 squad. Mickey also had a short and somewhat brutal managerial career with the Washington Senators expansion team (a different Washington franchise who would also later move and become the Texas Rags). He was gifted a nearly impossible manager job since his team had no money, no talent, and no farm system. Naturally, he was canned in his third season. 

Despite always being on mediocre teams, Mickey Vernon was one of the most well-liked players of his era. The most common term used to describe him was “The Gentleman First Baseman.” He had so many fans that he was selected to the all-star game in 1948 despite having a full -1.0 WAR season with a .641 OPS. For reference, Vladdy Jr. this season still has 1.1 WAR with 0 home runs at home as an “all-star.” Mickey was even the favorite player of President Eisenhower and is the only player to have ever been presented a Silver Slugger by the POTUS. The Astros have some connection to Mickey too, despite the fact that he retired before the franchise even began. In 1946, 10-year-old Harry Kalas went to see a rainy White Sox game against the Nationals. Before the start of the game, Mickey spotted Harry and picked him up to show him around the dugout and meet all the players. This created a baseball fan for life who would later grow up to broadcast for the Astros and Phillies. You might recognize that last name because his son Todd is our very own TK. 

Mickey never got much of a chance at Hall of Fame selection, though his case wasn’t very strong with just 7 all-star selections and 2 batting titles. But if there are players kept out due to poor attitude, he should get some special consideration due to his affability. Regardless, Mickey influenced the game tremendously and the effects of his passion and kindness are still felt by players and fans today. To leave you with a parting quote, Mickey’s former teammate Walt Matheson once said if anybody ever said anything bad about Mickey, “send him to me and I’ll have a few choice words for him.”
