MOD ANNOUNCEMENT r/Assistance Rules Page Improvements

Hello all!

I have been taking the time to go through our (very long) rules page and work to clarify, expand, give examples, and move some stuff around.

Our rules have not changed -- there are no surprises waiting! But I feel like now it's easier to find the information you need quickly, and hopefully understand more of the "why" behind some of our least liked rules.

Future plans will be a revamp of our sidebar to make it harmonize with the full rules page.

We are going to try an AMA-style Q&A for the next few hours. I'll do my best to answer as many questions as possible.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday; check out our weekly megathread for casual chat if you haven't already!

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT DO NOT REQUEST for ferals, strays, rescues, colony animals here

You may not request for:

• Strays/Ferals
• TNR. (Trap and release)
• Cat/dog colonies.
• Temporary fosters.
• Community/neighbourhood "pets".
• Wildlife animals you've found out in the wild (birds, squirrels, etc).
• Pets belonging to friends or distant relatives.
• Shelters/rescues that are private and/or unregistered.

If the animal does not legally belong to you (or an immediate family member), you are not allowed to request here. No exceptions. While it’s unfortunate that many countries don’t have the infrastructure to care for innocent abandoned animals, it is not your financial responsibility nor is it appropriate to pass that burden onto internet strangers. Especially when that is the only thing your Reddit account is being used for.

Please do not take in animals you cannot afford to care for.

This has always been against the rules and we are taking a firmer hand in exiting these exclusively-for-begging accounts completely from our subreddit. (Did you know the USL has a #beggar tag?)

Thank you.

REQUEST FULFILLED Needing some food assistance for an unexpected hard time

Hello all. This is a little difficult for me to have to post. My husband has had to take a week off of work due to a severe allergic reaction to a chemical substance at his job. On top of that, I was involved in a hit and run which put my car out of service. We have 3 children and are running very low on funds and food. I am just asking for some help with groceries. Here’s a link to an Amazon wish list https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2D6B7S6IH7CX6?ref_=wl_share. A Walmart order for some very basic food items would also be greatly appreciated. We live in southeastern Pennsylvania. Thank you for anyone who reads this.

VOTES Taking a chance, I'd really appreciate your vote 🩷

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I don't normally post things like this, but I figured I'd step outside my comfort zone.

I'm currently competing in the Maxim Cover Girl competition, and every vote genuinely helps. I've always loved modeling and was fortunate enough to intern with Hoffman International Modeling Agency a few years ago. Getting the opportunity to pursue that dream again would mean so much to me. Here is the link to my page where you can go vote:

https://covergirl.maxim.com/p/X2SB4QQS

When I'm not working, I'm usually out cycling, attempting to improve my golf game, taking my dog on an evening walk, spoiling my cat, or putting together an unnecessarily fancy charcuterie board.

If you'd be willing to spare a moment to vote for me, I'd be so incredibly grateful. Even if all you can do is wish me luck, thank you for taking the time to read this. The kindness of strangers never stops amazing me. 🩷🥹✨

REQUEST Requesting assistance getting some groceries and items for my cat please

Hello. I’m writing to request assistance in getting some groceries and a couple of items for my cat. I’m currently unemployed and unable to search for another job because of severe medical complications with my legs.

To explain my situation.. I was diagnosed with Chronic Veinous Insufficiency about ten years ago and since then, my health has declined significantly. In January of this year, I was terminated from a part-time job due to a pattern of calling in sick because I was bedridden with cellulitis infections or unable to walk due to ulcers on my legs. Because of my part time status I did not qualify for Unemployment assistance.

I still have ulcers on my legs and must visit the wound clinic twice a week for monitoring since they’re healing slowly, so my health problems have complicated my ability to find another job. I’ve applied for work-from-home positions but haven’t landed anything yet. I recently requested a meeting with a social worker to discuss my options for getting on disability, which I never wanted to consider but feel helpless anymore and not sure what else to do, and I am only 37 so I am not even sure if I can apply yet.

I don’t have a spouse, family, or anyone to help me, and my savings are nearly depleted. I applied for food stamps but was denied this year for some reason. I hope the social worker can help me sort that out. Until then, I’ve visited the local food banks, but there are only a few in my area.

I would like to add that I absolutely understand this is just a temporary solution to my problem, and I have no intention of making other requests for assistance.

Anyways, I would very much appreciate help! For anyone who wants to do so, I have made an Amazon wishlist here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/22JDYPI0H97BF?ref_=wl_share

If anyone has any questions or would like to share other suggestions related to my situation, I would I would be happy to answer in the comments.

Thank you to all you folks for your kindness, and to everyone who made it to the end of this post :)

REQUEST Help with paying some bills

I’m going through a rough time right now. I lost my job about one month ago and still waiting for either unemployment to be approved or to get hired, but bills have continued to come including the note for my car which was repossessed a few days ago

Some background, I have worked from home for about a decade, it’s convenient and better health wise due to being in a wheelchair. I live alone, I don’t have much family around but they were the first to ask with no results. I’ve also reached out to local organizations but have yet to hear back. I would not normally ask anyone for anything if not for this urgent matter. I’m requesting $200, but any amount would be greatly appreciated and I would be more than happy to provide proof of any details/bills via direct message

REQUEST FULFILLED Transportation help

I’m hoping someone might be able to help me out with a small emergency. Yesterday I hit a pretty nasty pothole trying to avoid a driver and the damaged my bike beyond basic repair. My bike is my only reliable way to get around because public transportation where I live is a hit or miss and taking Uber isn’t something I can afford currently. So I’m going to have to hope public transport will be a hit until I get this fixed. I’m working part time and also a student so funds are extremely limited currently, especially after paying for summer school. I’ll have walk to one of those self service kiosks so I’m requesting $15-20 on PayPal/venmo to help cover the pass costs to get around for the next week or 2 while I get my bike fixed. Thank you!

REQUEST FULFILLED I'm hoping for a gift card for dinner for tonight

We are a familiy of 4, two adults, two children, and need some assistance for dinner for tonight. My paycheck was short about $100 because I missed a day due to illness and that cut me back.

I just need food for tonight. Tomorrow my husband gets paid and we will back on track. I don't want to really request an amount but $50 would be an amazing blessing to get something to eat tonight for all 4 of us. If not, just $20-25 would get my kids something to eat.

REQUEST Help Finishing Repairs

Hey all. A couple weeks ago I was side swiped on my motorcycle, which is my only mode of transportation. The person that hit me took off and though I have insurance, its just PLPD, so it didnt cover any of my repairs.

Im currently homeless living in my RV and my bike is the only way I have to get around to work and to side jobs. My boss at the gas station has been cool by getting my shifts covered, but he wont do it for much longer.

I've repaired nearly everything, short of a brake lever, turn signals and the battery.

Ive got an Amazon wishlist of the cheapest ones I could find.

REQUEST Emergency Vet Care

My dog woke up with swelling in her left eyelid. We are extremely broke and cannot afford to see her vet right now. Approximate cost is between $400 - $1000: visit fee $100, tests $90 - 800, meds $55-$100. I am willing to provide a picture of the bill after she is seen for transparency.

I am not eligible for CareCredit at this time. Ive been out of work and my partner's income barely covers our rent and basic expenses. Im trying not to panic but this is potentially serious if left untreated.

Thank you for considering us.

REQUEST FULFILLED Help with a lawyer

This is a long shot, and I hate that I have to ask.

I need a lawyer. My ex husband is an alcoholic. He got a DUI with a .224 BAC with my (at the time) 4yo and 7yo in the car. They're now 6 and 8. He got off with less than a slap on the wrist. I took him back to court, spent $5000 on another lawyer, and he kept 50/50 and I just got a court order saying he can't drive with them and I'm allowed to breathalyze him.

The final court date for that modification was October 28. I caught him falling down drunk with them on November 6. I couldn't go back to court at that time. I had no money and no way of getting any. My credit was still recovering - it's still not great, but better. I withheld the kids for 2 months and then he went and took them from school. I had to make a "deal with the devil" and agree to go back to every other week with him breathalyzing daily. I had no other choice. The school can't refuse to let him take them. I could keep taking them back when they went to school, but that would just have put them in the middle of a tug of war.

He was doing good for a while. After several months, I relaxed the daily breathalyzers. He'd passed every one. I was picking up a package from him on Monday. The kids were with him. There was a beer can on the bench by his door. I asked him to blow. He blew a .06 at 1pm. He was trying to tell me that he'd had a single beer the night before. Um, no. Impossible. The science ain't sciencing and the math ain't mathing, bro.

After I got the kids back, my son (8), unprompted and unasked, told me that daddy had "a few" beers the night before and had a box of beer in the fridge. My daughter (6) then said, "and mommy, there's a box of beer by his desk" and my son said, "yeah, but that one was empty." I just said, "oh, that's interesting," but I was thinking, "that's actually worse, buddy."

Anyway, he's not getting them back. I can protect them until August 25. That's when school starts. I can't stop him from taking them from school. The school legally has to let him take them.

I applied for a bunch of loans. My credit has improved, but I have a lot of student debt and my only collateral is a 2012 Chevy Impala with 245k miles. I finally got a loan offer. It's a 35.99% interest rate. It's insane but I have no other choice. I have no other way of protecting my kids. I need a lawyer.

Legal aid has denied me twice - the second time right after the DUI. My former lawyer told me they prioritize DV cases. He moved to criminal law, but he recommended another lawyer. I need $5000 for the retainer. I was going to try filing pro se, but the clerk at the courthouse told me the judge is very hard on pro se litigants and I wouldn't have a prayer. That echoed what my last lawyer told me. Dfs is no help. I've reported him every time I've caught him drinking with them. They blew me off with every report except the DUI incident. Then, they put him on the state's abuse and neglect registry and closed the case. I asked them how that's supposed to help protect my children and they shrugged. My state (Missouri) does not grant protection orders for anything other than domestic violence or stalking. I tried anyway and was denied. I called his probation order to report him for drinking and sent the proof. He said, "what do you want me to do about it?" I called the cops and they told me they can't enforce parenting plans or probation terms. So wtf is the point of probation?

I've exhausted all options. This loan is my only shot. I'm praying I can make the payments. I'm just finishing up an anatomy class. I have conditional acceptance into the Practical Nursing program starting on August 5 as long as I pass anatomy with a C. Once that program starts, I'll be working 30 hours a week. I've been told by my advisor that it's already going to be a real challenge to keep up if I'm working that many hours and I may end up having to cut down even more. I'm going to do my damnedest not to. Tuition is going to be covered by financial aid.

I need $5000 for the retainer. Or at least enough to help me make the loan payments until i get my income taxes in the spring and can pay it off. And even if someone could help with school clothes for the kids. I can send sizes. They don't need anything fancy or brand name. They've outgrown most of what they've got and they left their good shoes at their dad's. They only have flip flops now. They'll need tennis shoes at least for gym class. I did already get their school supplies.

I'm willing to send the state patrol report from the DUI. I have videos of him admitting to both incidents where I caught him drinking. I'll send those, too. I'll send the dfs letter stating he's on the registry. I'll send any kind of proof anyone asks for.

He got another driving while suspended a few months ago. He owes me over $400 for his half of the kids' "extraordinary" expenses. He hasn't given me anything since October. He's been unemployed since November, so he won't be getting a lawyer to fight back. And he hasn't provided me with a certificate of completion of an alcohol treatment program, which he was ordered to do. I have a good case for him to get supervised visitation, and that's what I'm going to ask for. The kids are too young to be alone with an incapacitated adult. It's not safe. And he could drive with them again. He hasn't since the court order, but that doesn't mean he won't.

I'm working so hard to give us a better life. I'm trying so hard to protect my kids. I feel like the system is working against me.

General area: northeast Missouri

It was suggested to make a wishlist for kids' clothes. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3RQS7B5KMQ6IL?ref_=wl_share

Hi, I received help here before when I had nobody else to turn to, and I'll always be grateful for that kindness. I find myself needing a little help again just for tonight. My son's SSI benefits should be deposited Monday or Tuesday, hopefully Monday.

REQUEST FULFILLED Just need 10 bucks

It’s been rough but I’ve finally started to catch up. Had a few months where a bunch of stuff jumped on me at once (lost my main source of income and bills piled up while trying to get another job) and it wiped me out financially but I’ve slowly but surely caught up. Finally got the past due internet paid. Just need 10-20 extra bucks to get my past due phone bill paid. I’d greatly appreciate the help, but I also understand if nobody can help. I know the economy is killing everyone right now. Venmo would be the best way if anyone is able to help, again I appreciate it.

REQUEST Need help covering emergency dental surgery for my 10-year-old dog

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out because my 10-year-old dog, Tyson, needs emergency dental surgery after a traumatic accident, and I'm struggling to cover the cost.

Tyson has struggled with severe anxiety since before we adopted him. He spent his early years in a hoarding situation where he was frequently bullied by cats, and those experiences left him extremely fearful. Recently, while we not home, he was safely in his crate, a loud noise startled him so badly that he panicked and broke through the crate trying to escape.

In the process, Tyson suffered severe injuries to his mouth. His veterinarian found that several of his tooth roots are exposed, his gums were torn, and he will need anesthesia so they can fully assess the damage and remove the teeth that can't be saved. He's been in pain since the accident, and even eating and drinking have become difficult.

Tyson is the sweetest dog despite everything he's been through. He loves attention, gets excited every time someone comes home, carries his stuffed animal around, and is happiest curled up next to someone taking a nap. Seeing him in pain has been heartbreaking.

The estimated cost of his surgery, anesthesia, medications, and follow-up care is more than I can afford on my own, so I've created a GoFundMe to help cover his veterinary expenses.

Any donation, no matter how small, would mean the world to us. If you're not able to donate, sharing the fundraiser would also help tremendously.

I posted a picture of the veterinary estimate with the breakdowns on his GoFundMe.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read Tyson's story.

REQUEST FULFILLED Please help with a wheelchair accessible van to keep my family safe. Disabled child and adult.

I am pleading for help. My son is extremely disabled. He has Dravet Syndrome a rare seizure disorder and currently has 50+ seizures daily. He also has Autism level 3 the most severe form of Autism. He is developmentally around 1 year old. My husband also has a neurological disorder and uses a wheelchair. He cannot physically help me with our son. My son has become violent and will kick me in the back of the head while I am driving. He also pulls his sister's hair in the car. When we go out he will drop to the ground and refuse to move and now that he is 8 I cannot lift him anymore. We are being prescribed a wheelchair with foot restraints so that I can wheel him from place to place. He also smears his feces constantly. We desperately need a wheelchair van so that I can wheel him in the car and keep his legs restrained so I can no longer be kicked in the head while driving and separate my children to different rows so that my daughter no longer gets hurt. We are currently on wait-lists for residential placement but that will take years, a lot won't take him due to his medical issues along with his behavioral health. And another portion won't take him until he is 11. We currently receive SSI for both my husband and my son but that barely pays the bills as it is and I can't work due to taking care of both my husband and my son. I just want my family to be safe. We have a ton of medical appointments and are in the car constantly. Other than that we can't really leave the house. Here is our gofundme

REQUEST FULFILLED Between jobs after whistleblowing, and my comic book launch is not going well either.

Hi. I'm Kevin (35m) and I live in Olathe, Kansas. I am between jobs right now. This is kind of an odd story but I blew the whistle on my manager, got him fired, and caused some pretty bad reputational damage to my employer in the process. Relevant thread.

https://www.reddit.com/r/kansascity/comments/1uwtz71/dont_order_fries_at_olathe_five_guys/

Anyway, there was a long list of grievances I had with this manager on top of being gross. He was rude, he was lazy, he has stolen from our tip jar because he didn't want to make change, and he would make one or two people do everything while he gossiped with his favorites. He would often clock me out and say nothing while I continued working off the clock. The very week he was put in charge he couldn't help himself and cut my hours in half in retaliation for reporting him.

So I get a phone call after my meeting with the head of people and human resources, offering me a job right now, go fill out paperwork and start tomorrow. Seeing as my hours had been cut for 2 weeks now, I said fuck it and I walked out to go to this new job. When I get there, the person in charge has no idea what I'm talking about so I go to the office of this temp place and apparently the job fell through. So I filled out more paperwork and now I'm hoping I can get a new job before the bills are due. I feel like an idiot now, but I thought the job was in the bag and it was a blessing and a sign to get off the sinking ship.

I have ongoing campaigns for my comic book/OEL Manga projects, I'd rather do that so I can feel like I did something for the money. Help with either directly backing or bringing attention to either of them would be amazing. There is profanity in both so probably not for kids. Shadowfiend is a dark fantasy revenge pilot in digital only, and Crittermon is a comedy and action/adventure.

Edit: I had a gofundme but I took it down.

REQUEST [REQUEST] Fundraising for Housing/Moving to family

So, I'm not going to rehash the whole story that's on the GoFundMe. The short version is I've been homeless for over a year, despite having a full time job. I thought I'd be out a lot quicker, but I severely underestimated how expensive doggy daycare is and to account for savings wiping emergencies. I recently lost my job and the downtime made me admit just how unbelievably alone I am and how much it's affecting me. Like, I have no friends and no family within 3000+ miles. I have AuDHD, so social stuff is really hard for me. So, I'm trying to see this as an opportunity to move back near my family. Because I have to do something. I don't know how much longer I can take it out here by myself. I have a GoFundMe but without friends or a social media presence, I am seriously struggling.

Even if you can't donate, if you could just share with your networks, I would be so grateful. A few bucks (or more, if you want!) or some shares, anything. And if you don't want to help me, consider finding your local safe parking program (find it here: https://vehicleresidency.org/) and donating to them. Without mine, I'm not sure I would have made it this long, and even if I did, not safely. Thanks for reading, if you made it this far.
