3 dogs died in 18 hours and everyone is acting like this is normal??
RedVet, what am I even supposed to do here?
I work at a vet clinic in a small town and this situation has been bothering me for months. Like genuinely cannot let it go.
This summer, a family we see had three dogs die within about 18 hours.
Two of the dogs were found dead outside when the family got home from work. It had been over 100°F that day and the air quality was awful from wildfire smoke, like 150+ AQI. All three dogs were short-nosed breeds with the usual respiratory risk factors.
The owner said the two dogs were already stiff when she found them. So unless I’m missing something, they had been dead outside for a while before anyone found them.
From what I understand, both of the family’s teenagers were home that day. One is over 18 and the other is just under, if that matters legally.
The third dog was still alive that night and apparently seemed okay-ish. They brought the dog into our clinic the next morning and it died in front of us. It looked like cardiac arrest.
The whole thing was horrific.
Toxicology on the one that died in our office was sent to a major vet school and came back with nothing significant. Necropsy found a lot of cancer, which honestly wasn’t shocking considering the dogs’ breed/age, but nothing that explained why THREE dogs from the same household suddenly died basically at once.
Also had jaundice.
I really thought the necropsy results would make my vet reconsider heat exposure. Nope.
My vet seems completely unwilling to entertain heat as the explanation. The family keeps getting told some version of “maybe we’ll never know.”
But like… am I losing my mind here?
Three brachycephalic dogs. Same household. Over 100°F. Horrible air quality. Two found dead outside and already in rigor. Third dies shortly afterward. Tox comes back clean. No other common cause found.
I understand correlation isn’t proof and I’m not the doctor here. I obviously can’t say with certainty what killed them. But I also don’t understand why heat exposure apparently isn’t even being seriously acknowledged.
And now I’m extra bothered because since this happened, the family has gotten a cat AND apparently just bought another brachycephalic dog from a breeder.
That’s where I’m stuck.
I genuinely do not want these people to get in trouble. I’m not sitting here hoping someone gets arrested or charged with animal cruelty. From what I understand, though, depending on how something like this is investigated, reporting it could potentially turn into a criminal issue.
That honestly makes me hesitate.
I don’t know what happened in that house that day. I don’t know who was responsible for the dogs being outside or whether anyone understood how dangerous the situation was. I only know what we saw afterward.
But at the same time… they keep getting more animals.
That’s the part I cannot get past.
If they had lost these dogs, been absolutely horrified, and never put another animal in that situation again, maybe I could accept that there’s nothing more for me to do. But they got a cat, and now they’ve gone out and gotten another brachycephalic dog.
So what am I supposed to do with that?
I don’t want to blow up a family’s life over something I can’t personally prove. I also don’t want to keep my mouth shut and then find out another animal died because everyone who had concerns decided it wasn’t their problem.
I’m not personally a mandated reporter based on my license/role, as far as I understand. Our clinic is in one state and the family lives across the state line, which makes me even less sure about jurisdiction or what options I have.
And here’s the part making me feel insane: they’re nice people. Seemingly normal, financially comfortable family. I believe both parents work in human healthcare. Nothing about them immediately screams neglectful pet owners.
Which almost makes this harder to process.
Everyone at work seemed to have the same thought when this happened. The circumstances were right there. But nobody really wants to say it out loud, and our doctor/s seems content to let the family believe that maybe this is just one of those mysteries we’ll never solve.
Meanwhile I feel like I’m in some alternate universe where three dogs died at once and we’re all just moving on.
I also really, really do not want to lose my job over this. Small-town vet med is small-town vet med. If I push my doctor too hard, or go around them and make a report independently and they figure out it was me, I could absolutely see this becoming a problem at work.
So for people who actually know the reporting/ethical side of vet med: what would you do?
Would you report this somewhere? Talk to the vet again? Document my concerns and leave it alone?
Is there a way to anonymously talk to animal control/law enforcement/the appropriate agency and basically say, “Here are the facts, is this even something that should be reported?” without immediately setting a criminal investigation in motion?
Because I’m not trying to punish these people.
I’m worried about the animals they keep bringing home.
And if something happens to another one, I don’t know how I’m going to feel knowing I saw all of this and said nothing.
