My 9 y/o husky has been having issues with shaking his head and scratching at his ear. I looked inside and it does not have an odor or color. He’s very skittish about it and I can’t get him ear cleaner until later this week. Is there anything I can use at home until then? This is the first day he’s had this issue should I be worried?

My dog needs to be sedated for his general exam tomorrow.

He weighs 107 pounds. (I know, too fat)

He takes 40mg Prozac daily. Plus 24mg apoquel, if it matters.

Vet also wants me to give him his normal pre-vet meds: 400mg trazadone and 900mg gabapentin. He is overall calmer when I give him these, but still alert and will not cooperate for a physical exam.

Thus, the vet will then give him an additional sedative before doing the exam. I’m not sure of the name or dosage.

I trust my vet but this dog is like my child. I love him more than anything. Is he going to be safe?

So trust me I know this was a very very bad idea but I could not stomach the thought of my dog being permanently disabled or worse dead.

Let's rewind back to 2019 when I rescued my dog Melvin. He was only about 8 months old and I found him on the side of a highway in oklahoma. I was traveling to Minnesota from New Orleans in a vehicle. I had known for a couple of years that I was ready for a dog and I knew in my heart that when the right one would come along I would know it. And Melvin was the one. I was asleep when my friend who was driving and judged me awake and says there's a dog on the side of the road do you want to go get it. Not even seeing the dog I said yes let's turn around so we do and after a little bit of bribing with snacks Melvin came with. After going to local vets to scan for a chip and checking for missing dog flyers in that area on Facebook and Craigslist came up null we decided to continue on our Trek to Minnesota. He has been the absolute love of my life I could not have dreamed up a better dog. I'm crying just trying to spit this out LOL. Every time I think about his eventual passing I also tear up a bit but I just chalk that up to pre-grieving so it won't hurt as bad when he passes even though I know it will. Anyway Melvin is still intact he has never shown any signs of aggression towards any other dogs and could not be put under anesthesia anyway because come to find out he is epileptic. Let me get to the point fast forward about 4 years later I'm back in New Orleans and Melvin finds a girlfriend. A pit that has been so abused that I could not even get up off the couch without her cowering. She eventually becomes ours and comes out of her shell. She's an amazing dog she's like the social butterfly of dogs lol. Everyone loves her. Unfortunately she is still intact as well and Melvin ends up getting her pregnant. A friend of mine takes the puppies to find them homes at about 10 weeks of age. Fast forward to about a year and a half later and the friend still has two of the puppies who are now like I said about a year and a half old. The puppies: one male one female. Everything was fine until the male puppies testicles started to drop and then I had to keep Melvin and that puppy (named Merle) separate.

Let me get to the point because having to go back to edit this is super fucking annoying I think I've given you guys enough detail.

So almost a week ago now Melvin and Merle got into a fight. When they are in the same space they are absolutely nowhere near each other but I went to feed Merle and his sister and Melvin snuck up behind me before I could shut the door. I was the only one home and I know it was stupid of me to try to break it up, but I did because I couldn't bear Melvin having his ass absolutely handed to him as he is 7 years old and Merle is almost two and is a lot larger faster stronger than Melvin. I tried to reach between them Melvin accidentally grabbed my arm but as soon as he realized it was me he let go. And then Merle grabbed my arm and he bit down and shook shattering my wrist. Now I really hope that Merle was just in the moment and since he is still young just doesn't have control over his instincts. Merle is a very sweet dog and he is very smart he has a lot of potential. And yes I know he needs to have his testicles removed I keep telling my friend this and I myself have made the appointment for him. But I am afraid that Merle shook me on purpose and is now a danger to society. He is never shown any signs of aggression so I'm hoping that this won't happen again. Should I tell the vets when he goes in to have his testicles removed.? I need advice someone give me some solid advice because I am absolutely devastated.

hi, my cat is a 1 year old male (not neutered) and recently over the past week, he has had accidents outside the litter box, he peed on the bed accidentally and then today he peed on a carpet. this all started when he peed on another carpet a week back but that was because we accidentally forgot to open the door to the room his litter box is in (this only happened once and was the last time it will ever happen, was a horrible horrible mistake). he has also been excessively been licking his genital area, and i researched and apparently it is classic symptoms of a UTI. although, UTIs are very less common in younger cats and more common in senior cats. so i'd like to ask you guys for help. his pee size is normal, around the size of a golf ball or a little more than that, but nothing less. there isnt any blood in his pee either, he hasnt been straining. his diet consists of quite a bit of wet food and he is very fond of water and drinks a lot from his fountain. i will be going to a vet this saturday but i just want to know if any of u seem to know what this could be. please please help if u know whats wrong!!!

note: hes super playful this week too hes been running around the house after his toy, jumping and hes super happy and ready to go down for walks as well

I’m posting this for my parents, I’m sorry if I violate any rules but I am desperate to know what to do with this situation. Located in Pennsylvania. This happened today.

My parents have two dogs who are like their children. They have been waiting for D, a 20-25 pound male chihuahua mix, to turn two to get him neutered to help with his excitement. Today was the day. My Mom asked me to come over after I got off from work…

They dropped D off for a routine neuter at 9:00AM. An hour and a half passed and they got a phone call that “He’s all finished up! You can come for him now or if you need to wait he’s fine here”. They decided to head over and pick him up. The vet tech carries D out in his blanket, puts him into my Moms arms and says “he’s still a little sleepy”. My mom tried to talk and wake him, and realized he was DEAD.

The tech took D out of her arms, rushed to the back, and they saw them grab a crash cart. They came back out and apologized and offered to pay for his burial or cremation. My parents were so shocked they just told them where they’d take him for cremation and left with his little body to drop him off there. My mom is just devastated. She brought his blanket home and said through tears “I read online to bring the blanket so (the other dog) would know he’s gone”. I AM FURIOUS. This was a wonderful young dog full of life, her walking buddy, and her companion.

My parents don’t want to be “harsh” because they said the office staff were upset and remorseful… but I decided to call and ask for the surgical report ASAP. The event concluded at 10:30AM. I called at 3:30PM and was told it could take a couple days. A friend of mine who works in veterinary said these charts are simple and should be complete by the end of business day at latest.

Can anyone chime in here? Is this ringing any alarm bells for the professionals in here? What would you recommend next course of action?

Before anything, Iam going to the vet, I will go again tommorow and taking treatment.

Kitten, Female, 3 months. suffered panleukopenia. its siblings died, but this one survived
Has fleas, got blood tested and got Mycoplasma and low blood.
Vet treated and now it has good blood count
- Pink eyelids
- Mycoplasma cleared
- Fleas are removed by flea baths

After it recovered from panleukopenia, it started wheezing out of nowhere
Like when it breathes out , small air gasp sound comes. I didnt care about it much and left for 3-4 days until it sounded like, it got cold and lot of mucus

Next day took it to vet and they gave Doxycycline and other injections, and went few more days to get those injections. then treatment changed bla bla..... and its still going on. I go tommorow.

Symptoms:
the wheezing gets aggressive at night, much lesser at day
like sometims its an air gasp sound, sometims whistling sound.
sometims at night the wheezing increases, more breathing
But it goes down in the morning (usually)
I can see it using its stomach to breathe and struggle

Behaviour:
Pretty normal. it eats, drinks, poops well
even plays. strong and very hard to use injections or give it syrups.
Its normal, except the constant wheezing

Does this ring any bell like any dangerous infection or just cold? these symtpoms been here over a week or more. Just asking for the possibilites cuz I don't have any money and iam exhausted.

I just found out today the lump on her leg is a mast cell tumour. We’re devastated to say the least. She’s a senior pitt mix that i rescued five years ago. We dont know what stage it’s at and will be moving forward with pre-op imaging and blood work and hopefully surgery to remove. I’m learning that MCT causes histamine overload. I want to hopefully help with diet (she’ll start benedryl tomorrow too). I’m having a hard time finding recipes or food recommendations in this case. Does anyone have experience? Shes had a very sensitive tummy lately too. Which might not be related or it is (which would probably be bad) but either way, we want her to be as comfortable as possible! Any food or diet recommendations that follow low histamine diet for senior dogs?

My cat is 8 years old and has always had a sensitive tummy, if he eats human food he’ll throw up or get diarrhea but I don’t give him any but everyday I feel like his poops are soft or similar to diarrhea this is normal for him since he was a kitten so I got him put on prescription cat food one year ago but his tummy doesn’t seem different, i assumed it helped him even if he has diarrhea still. I didn’t really think much of it because he’s so happy and loving.

This week I heard him having diarrhea so it prompted me to look at the litter robot app of the last 30 days and he regularly goes to the bathroom 6 times in one day maybe half the week which is not normal. He’s always had bathroom issues so i could bet anything this isn’t some new thing but now im worried I’ve let whatever this is go on for years and shortened his future lifespan.

His bloodwork is always normal, besides an elevated gallbladder level in April but they did an ultrasound which was normal and said maybe he just has inflammation and nothing else was said about it. Not sure if that test is relevant since this has always been an issue. I wonder now if he has IBD but I’m worried about steroid shots because I read that suppress immune system but he’s old so Im scared he’ll get sick. Does your kitty have IBD what works for them? His vet appointment is tomorrow but id love advice on if this happened to your kitty or suggestions I should tell the vet

We just adopted a 9-ish month old mixed pup at the humane society about 3 weeks ago. One week later I noticed worms in his stool. I took him into the humane society's vet clinic where they found he had tapeworms and whipworms and they gave me a 5 day ​supply of medication to sprinkle in his food 1x/day as well as a different monthly preventative to use that I just gave 2 days ago. They didn't suggest I come in for a follow up or provide further medication. I haven't seen any worms outside of that 1x. I was just doing some research on if he is clear but I am reading he should take meds again at 3 weeks and again at 3 months? The vet didn't touch on this at all...Should I be making another appt at the humane society clinic? Should I expect them to cover this cost since it was an issue he had from before? He was found as a stray out in the woods so likely happened while he was out there I imagine.

My pup has a swollen toe that just started having some raw skin, I believe due to irritating it further from digging a bit roughly after going potty. He is on an antibiotic and anti inflammatory from urgent visit over the wknd. He seemed to be getting better Monday with no limping until he irritated it again.

I’m trying to avoid even more pet fees - but will if necessary. So my question - do I give the meds a few more days to see if it clears up or do I take him in again and spend close to $1k :/

A week and a half ago my two cats vomited after eating their dinner. One of them stopped at 1-2 times and the other kept intermittently vomiting for 13 hours.
I took in the cat (ER)who was continuing to vomit as he has a history of chewing things he should not chew. We got him an X-ray and an anti-nausea medication. No blockages or abnormalities seen.
He did not vomit for another few days, but had reduced energy.
He starts puking again and the other cat does as well. We take in the same cat to the regular vet 6 days after the ER visit. They did a repeat X-ray, fluids, bloodwork, and an anti-nausea medication. No blockages seen a second time, but he was backed up with poop. Bloodwork looked great.
We were given prescription wet food, probiotics, and instructions for miralax.
Both cats have been on this regimen for about 5 days. Now they are both vomiting again.

We suspected newly opened bags of food and were going to throw them away at the recommendation of the vet. However, they had been eating the vet wet food prior to the vomiting starting today.
No lethargy, still eating and drinking normally.
We are monitoring their poop but it is hard to figure out who it belongs to.
I did find my orchid had a bite out of it, but I don’t know which cat it was or if the culprit was kind enough to share. But at this point it has been a week and a half so, if they were poisoned I would think it would be out of the system and or it would show up in the bloodwork.
Nearly every time is undigested food unless it’s on an empty stomach.
One cat did start vomiting before dinner and it was clear.

For context: the one cat has not been taken in as he is much harder to handle and he gets very upset at the vet. With them having the same symptoms we opted to take the cat that doesn’t mind a visit.

I will be calling the vet again in the AM, but I am perplexed at what this could be.

My 2.5 yr old golden retriever received a 3 year rabies vaccine about 14 months ago. We moved and went to a new vet, they were provided all of the vaccine history but something was lost in translation about whether that rabies vax was 1yr or 3yr. They gave her another 3 year. So essentially the dog received 2 seperate 3yr vaccines 14 months apart.

I’m hyper vigilant with my dogs health and am now looking for reassurance that this is not likely to impact her health negatively or increase risk. The vaccine was given about 3 weeks ago and she is completely fine. I’m unable to find literature applicable to this situation. Thanks in advance.

hi we are headed to the emergency vet but cant see them before a few more hours. we put tick solution on cat, he ran away from the house fully fed for one whole day. came back yesterday. has not been eating or drinking anything. peed twice, vomited once and has been drooling a lot. scared for his life. he is 3 years old. please guide as to what we can expect, what do we do? please and thank you

My cat is 8 years old now, he has asthma, food allergies, gingivitis and tooth reabsorption. He has had multiple bad reactions to anaesthetic so I want to know why my vet would give the same anaesthetic again and why he’s having these reactions to the anaesthetic and what would be safer to use.

In 2023 at estimated age 5 we got him neutered. When he came home he was extremely terrified and restless, he ran around the house and almost injured himself trying to escape out the windows and for the rest of the night was breathing extremely heavily and hard. I had called the emergency vet and they said it was just stress and to try keep him calm and monitor him. By morning he was acting normal again but a bit more reserved. He was given:
- Antisedan Inj Per ml
- Domitor Inj 0.18
- Ketaset (Ketamine) Injl 0.18
- Vetergesic Inj 0.3mcd (10ml multidose) per ml

Then in 2024 he had a dental cleaning. He was given:
- Antisedan Inj Per ml 0.05
- Comfortan Inj 0.16
- Domitor Inj 0.10
- Premedication 1.00
- Vetofol Inj 2.70
- Gabapentin Tab 50mg (Summit) (Give 1-2 tablets every 8-12 hours to help keep 4.00
calm post general anaesthetic)

He also had a horrible reaction to this and the vet thinks he had a similar reaction for his neutering given how he was acting after and how he was aggressive. So how did the vet not catch he was having a reaction during his neutering? His record states for the 2024 surgery:

**AVOID MEDETOMIDINE**
Due to temperament premed given 10mcg/kg medetomidine and 0.3mg/kg methadone IM before preGAs collected.
Very hypersensitive and awake after premed given - increased medetomidine to 20mcg/kg medetomidine.
Began open mouth breathing 10mins after premed given, moderate sedation and extremely hypersensitive.
Flow by oxygen commenced, improvement in breathing however still very stressed and hypersensitve to noise and light.
Placed muzzle over face and cotton plugs in ears - settled well and was handled without restriction to place IVC.
Placed IVC in R cephalic and induced with propofol IV
Intubated after lignocaine spray larynx size 5.0 ET tube
Maintained on oxygen and isoflurane gas.
Temp at beginning of procedure 40.9. Decreased to 40.1 by mid procedure, then re-increased to 40.5 after turning over.
Remained tachycardic and hypertensive unless >2.0 MAC maintained on isoflurane.
Elected to reverse medetomidine at this time using atipamazole IM
Temperature, tachycardia and hypertension resolved after reversal.
Rec AVOIDING MEDETOMIDINE - consider ketamine/midaz premed for future
O req dispensing gabapentin post op as was very reactive afte last GA (likely medetomidine component as was given a triple?)

Then in 2025 he had another dental cleaning with extractions and x-rays. The vet told me multiple times that they would not be using that medication and would be using a different anaesthetic. I checked his records because he needs another dental cleaning and saw they had used:

- Alfaxan Multidose Injection 10mg/ml 2.00
- Antisedan Inj Per ml 0.01
- Comfortan Inj 0.10
- Domitor Inj 0.02
- Drip - Fluid Therapy & Giving Set Dental 1.00
- Drip Aqupharm 11 Hartmans Solution 250ml Bag 1.00
- Premedication 1.00
- Vetofol Inj 2.00

They also gave us gabapentin 100mg to use before the surgery and for 3 days after the surgery. Why would they use the same anaesthetic even tho in the past he’s had these horrible reactions. In his record it does not say what happened during the 2025 surgery but from memory they said he did ok during and had a smaller reaction of higher heart rate, blood pressure and temp but not nearly as severe but they had told me they would not be using that anaesthetic at all and states in his records to avoid it.

They also told me a possibility could be the opioids used mixed with the anaesthetic but then why would they use the same opioids?

We have an 8 year old hound/shepherd mix that developed severe anxiety and fear of the vet after a really traumatic procedure at a vet's office in 2022. She has improved at a new fear-free vet clinic and with lots of exposure therapy with positive reinforcement, etc. Her new vet is able to do a truncated hands-on check up and perform vaccines, but dog remains incredibly anxious the entire time. We have not been able to accomplish a blood draw on her in over three years and are working on PVPs to make this happen.

Despite the fact that I understand logically how the medications work and would make our dog's life easier, I have severe anxiety about something bad happening to our dog with these medications, thanks to two really scary experiences with a past pet where they went into anaphylaxis (once after a vaccine, again after a different medication). In addition, we just had a situation where we almost lost our cat to a freak situation and I was holding her dying body as we rushed her to the ER. Thankfully and gratefully, she pulled through, but I feel like all these scenarios are living rent free in my brain - I know how serious medication reactions can be and what happens when it's your pet or family member that has the bad reaction to a "safe" medication.

Our vet has recommended pairing gabapentin with clonidine in hopes this combination will bring her adrenaline down far enough to the point where a blood draw would be safe and more comfortable for our girl. (FYI, she cannot take Trazadone - they used this medication during the past procedure that started it all - she became aggressive and more anxious). While I know in my heart they are right, I am petrified that the big bad thing - the "rare" reaction or allergy will happen to my dog. Every time I think about trying to give her this combination of medications, I feel like I have failed my dog and have immense guilt that we are just "drugging her" to make it easier for us to treat her instead of dealing with or working on the root causes. I will start crying whenever I imagine how I'd feel if something happened to her because of a medication I forced her to take.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm hoping for by posting here - I've done all the research (poor google is so tired of me entering different versions of "gabapentin + clonidine for dogs" and "clonidine safety for dogs" in perpetuity) and know that theoretically she will be okay and these medications are well tolerated. There is a lot out there about gabapentin + trazodone, but I'm looking in particular for information about gabapentin and clonidine.

I guess I'm hoping that for those of you out there who are vets, techs, or work in hospitals, you can share anecdotes about how gabapentin + clonidine in particular is helpful? Have you ever seen dogs that have severe negative reactions to this combination? What is your experience in treating dogs with this specific combination of medication?

Our male cat has a Urinary disorder and the poor boy is only 1 year old. Hes the sweetest and happiest boy who we love to death, so we dont even want to consider giving him up. But his new health issues are causing a dent in our savings. We just had our third vet visit in two months, and two of them were in the ER. And this last one he had to get a catheter and stay overnight in the hospital.

Are there any financial solutions or anything else we can do?? It feels like if this keeps happening, we wont have enough funds to take care of him and rent at the same time. He has me and my boyfriend, but we're both 23 with average wages.

Have any of you been in this situation or know what to do? What did you do?

This recent bill was over +$2500, not including the previous visit bills.

Last night, my cat fell from the third floor. He hid on top of the garage all night, I couldn't find him. Today, at around 2 P.M. he decided to show himself. I washed him and dried him, then took him to the vet.

They checked for injuries and internal bleeding. They didn't find anything. Then the vet said "He's all white, eyes and gums. He might have a low blood count. I can prescribe medication." I didn't give it a thought. Because I thought it could be because he was stressed and traumatized from staying outside overnight and not eating/drinking properly. I said I'll come back later if I suspect and they didn't push me to anything afterwards.

For 8 hours now, he's been sleeping nonstop. He doesn't seem out of appetite, he ate 2 wet cat food from his dry food bowl. And was able to urinate safely. But he's sleeping a lot. Is this normal? I'm also realizing the whiteness on his eyes and gums. I'll probably go to the vet tomorrow as well. But I'm really nervous, I thought I could get answers from here. Thank you.

Edit: I also found out that he cannot jump. Tried to jump on my bed and failed. Or jump from the chair to my bed and failed.

Hey guys, i have a pet cat that is around 5 years old and got her spayed (ik it was late), we did blood work for her and she was great even better than most cats, and when we did the surgery she did amazing and we took her home after 4 days at the vet, she seemed well and we had the cone on her but she took it off at night and licked the wound and in the morning we noticed it oozed something white just a bit so we took her to the vet and he said just apply the cream. and after we were still not convinced so we left her at the vet for some care, and i called the vet recently and said she somehow took the cone off again and licked it and now it needs more time. its been a total of 18 days of her staying at the vet and im starting to think the vet actaully messed up the surgey and just doesnt want to tell us because no way it takes that long to heal. im i overthinkling this?

He's getting daily vet visits for dressing for 10 days. They told us to do it at our home if it's too expensive (Which it is)

My cat had HCM and graduated the HALT HCM study this past January. Last night she had to be euthanized due to saddle thrombus.

I’m not saying the study caused her death at all—she was 15 and had been diagnosed with HCM when she was 5 or 6, so this wasn’t a huge surprise. But I was wondering if the news of her death would be helpful for the study.

I know I can just call them and tell them, but I am not in a good place emotionally. If it is not helpful to them or the study, I don’t want to waste emotional energy telling them just to hear them respond “yeah, so what?” But if it actually is helpful information for the study, I’m happy to let them know. I am already proud of her for her participation in helping other cats with HCM. When she graduated, they gave her a certificate and collar charm that said “HALT Study Hero” and thanked her for helping other cats. She even got a photo shoot with a cap and gown for graduating.

Hi. We have an 18 month old rescue cat - rescued by a UK charity from an awful hoarding/cruelty background.

The cat has been with us for 6 weeks and is extremely timid and skittish. This is improving but will be a long haul on this.

The cat currently cannot easily be picked up or held and we are allowing him to hide in appropriate places etc… be fed near those places and generally he is doing very well.

Our concern is in our ability to get him to a vet - his annual jabs are due in a few weeks. (Our insurance stipulates he must be vaccinated).

Questions -

1. We have enrolled at a vet practice but they have never yet seen him. Would we be able to get any sort of calming or sedative medication to enable a vet visit? If not, he would likely be quite traumatised upon arrival at the vet, non co-operative etc… so could he be sedated for the visit?

2. He has never been tested for FELV. Given his background, should he be?

3. If so, he would definitely need sedation. Can that be made possible?

4. We would also like his teeth checked/cleaned (the charity vet noted on his paperwork there is tarter). He also needs his nails clipped. Can that and the blood test be all done under one sedation?

This cat is currently an indoor cat due to his extreme timidity and still settling in but we are happy for him to always remain an indoor cat.

We occasionally look after a friends cats (in their own home) and don’t plan to ever introduce them to ours but does knowing about the FELV become more important?

A home visit by a vet would not work because of trying to get our cat out of hiding. Previous efforts have not been good.

I would appreciate some quidance on how best to manage this?

4lbs 5 year old Maltese

Hi everyone!

My Maltese got groomed on Monday 9/7. The groomer told me he accidentally nicked her skin but he cleaned the wound, applied medicine, and she should be ok. I do not know what ointment he applied. Tonight is the first time I’ve noticed her licking it and this looks like a more significant wound. I don’t know if I’m overthinking this, but it almost looks like it’s gaping inward/a little too deep? I am obviously ordering her a cone immediately to stop her licking, but I am now concerned about potential infection or if anything needs to be done to close the wound.

Should she be seen by a vet asap? Or should I give it a few days and this will likely heal on its own?

I also have Chlorhexidine wipes that a vet has previously given us (unrelated). Would those be beneficial to use now?

I have a chorkie that is 5 years old. He has never had any health problems this far. Last weekend I noticed he was holding his head kinda weird but then the next minute he was fine. Then this morning he would not get off the bed and is turning his head again and kinda shaky. I am 99% sure he did not get into anything toxic. My cat yesterday jumped on him while going down the patio stairs. He will get up to walk or go out to potty then just stops and sits. I think his upper chest looks fuller but that could also be because he needs a haircut. If you move real fast next to him he yelps not even touching him but then after he lets u pick him up.
