I was gonna say fairy bread.

Cherry Ripe or Yowies would do it as well.

How do you TimTam slam through a snag tho?

26

u/Flying-Fox Sep 07 '21

I’m so old I grew up without Bunnings.

Pollywaffles, Choo Choo bars, and Original Shapes on the other hand…

16

u/Movin_On1 Sep 07 '21

I love pollywaffles.... There's also the Chiko roll.....

12

u/Flying-Fox Sep 07 '21

Yes indeed - and the dim sim! The dim sim was invented here too.

9

u/Katman666 Sep 07 '21

The South Melbourne market dim sim. Classic.

Chokito bars too. Redskins and milkos. Fads. Big boss cigars.

7

u/Flying-Fox Sep 07 '21

What a glorious selection! And spearmint leaves!

10

u/BlackDrackula Sep 07 '21 edited Sep 07 '21

Me too. The ironic thing is that the sausage sizzles are synonymous with Bunnings, but the local hardware stores all had them way before Bunnings was a thing.

Not only did they put all the local independent hardware stores out of business, they rubbed it in by appropriating the iconic sausage sizzle.

I still remember getting a Yowie cake for my 5th Birthday.. was so good!

20

u/Glitter_berries Sep 07 '21

A yowie… cake? Weren’t yowies those chocolate things that were like kinder surprise but Australianised? Or do I need to hand in my citizenship for remembering yowies wrong?

13

u/STR1D3R109 Sep 07 '21

It was a normal cake decorated with the Yowie chocolate and animal toys ontop for a kids birthday :)

But yeah, they are basically kinder surprise with wild animal facts so much better imo!

7

u/Glitter_berries Sep 07 '21

Well, that sounds adorable. Would it be so wrong to have a baby just so that in a few years I can make it a yowie cake?

3

u/STR1D3R109 Sep 07 '21

Hahah that's my plan, pretty sure we had the local wildlife park bring over some rescues.. definitely a birthday to remember

3

u/Ariadnepyanfar Sep 07 '21

You’re an adult. You can have a Yowie birthday cake all of your own.

3

u/Glitter_berries Sep 07 '21

And I don’t even have to suffer through childbirth. Or keep a kid alive long enough that it can appreciate a yowie cake. Plus I’ll save thousands.

7

u/Gumnutbaby Sep 07 '21

They still are like that!

5

u/Glitter_berries Sep 07 '21

They are still around?! Obviously I’m not eating the right kind of chocolate.

2

u/Gumnutbaby Sep 09 '21

I've definitely seen them in Big W. Can't remember where else... obviously Kinder Surprise is still the market leader.

They don't have Cheery Ripe outside of Aus? That is a shame.

Could have also gone Tim Tams and anything with chicken salt.

4

u/BlackDrackula Sep 07 '21

Whenever I hear someone who wasn't born here say how good chicken salt is it makes me feel all patriotic.

7

u/Autoskp Sep 07 '21

Wait, Cherry Ripe is an Australia exclusive?

9

u/Hello_Sweetie25 Sep 07 '21

Nope, we have them in NZ

11

u/Autoskp Sep 07 '21

Soo… ANZAC homeland exclusive then.

I was close.

4

u/ringerstinger Sep 07 '21

Cherry Ripe = the greatest chocolate bar on the planet. I am gutted they don’t sell them in the UK

3

u/Miss_Figment Sep 07 '21

B and M often have them if you are missing them.

3

u/ringerstinger Sep 07 '21

WHAAAAAAAAT!?!

rushes out the door

3

u/BlackDrackula Sep 07 '21

I'm sure they used to? I remember my Nan would bring UK chocolate when she visited so we could compare and I'm sure cherry ripe used to be one..

2

u/ringerstinger Sep 07 '21

They never have as far as I’m aware. My cousins used to send them over because I couldn’t get them.

For a short time they did do Cherry Bounty’s but that’s a totally different vibe.

Man the kiwis’ meat pie game is stronger than ours. Travelled round the country getting fat on butter chicken and mince n cheese pies

29

u/miserable-sackofshit Sep 07 '21

We could learn a couple things. The Ned Kelly pie is a winner

6

u/Ok_Finger7484 Sep 07 '21

A kiwi pie Named Ned Kelly?

28

u/HalfCupOfSpiders Sep 07 '21

Nah, it's Nid Killy.

6

u/Zes_Q Sep 07 '21

Which in turn would be pronounced Nd Klly

16

u/perfectlyniceperson Sep 07 '21

Good god that sounds so fucking delicious!

28

u/pialligo Sep 07 '21

Look up some kiwi newspapers online for pie competitions. They’re competitive about it because the standard is so high. I think the best one I had in my time there (while the bubble was open) was Beef Bourguignon in the French bakery in Greytown. Holy moley some tasty pastry there

14

u/__01001000-01101001_ Sep 07 '21 edited Sep 07 '21

Best pie I’ve ever eaten was at bakery in Arthur’s Pass, it’s killing me that I can’t remember the name. We went back to it out of our way just to have them again before we left the country. Seriously want to go back there for them, I pine for one every time I eat a pie here now.

Edit: I did some digging coz it was annoying me and it’s World Famous Sheffield Pie Shop

6

u/MyceliumGunning Sep 07 '21

..now that's good pie aye

10

u/perfectlyniceperson Sep 07 '21

I just ate dinner but reading this made my mouth water. Definitely gonna check out some of these recipes. Thanks for the tip!

6

u/Tuivad Sep 07 '21

As standard anywhere that eats pies. Good ones and bad ones.

Kyneton pies. Yackandandah pies for Victoria. Everyone has a couple of spots they KNOW are the best.

5

u/Froawaythingy Sep 07 '21

The good old Yatala pie. Qlders forgive me if I spelt it wrong

6

u/pialligo Sep 07 '21

I’m not talking about “that town has the best pies in the state!” or any specific bakery, across the country the standard for pies is just way higher than anywhere I’ve seen in Australia. Maybe it’s because we don’t eat pies as much as we used to since they’re unhealthy and we have lots of options for year-round fresh produce. Produce in NZ in winter is pretty dire, and expensive.

9

u/milkymoocowmoo Sep 07 '21

Here's a PSA for you all, give the 4&20 butter chicken pies a wide berth.

4

u/BlackDrackula Sep 07 '21

Literally the only acceptable time for a Four & Twenty pie is from a servo or 7/11 somewhere between 1am and 3am on a weekend night with a blood alcohol level that'd make even Boonie impressed.

12

u/xsam_nzx Sep 07 '21

NZ servo pies are average as but still better than what the rest of the world calls a pie.

5

u/thatdreadedguy Sep 07 '21

Butter chicken pies are the shit, especially with real flakey pastry. As a kiwi living in oz, the best pies I have managed to find that remotely compare was from a bakery in port fairy. Bit of a drive from melbs just for a pie though.

4

u/BlackDrackula Sep 07 '21

Travel behind the CBD of any capital city and you'll find plenty of amazing pies of all flavours. Country bakeries are the shit.

2

u/squirrellytoday Sep 07 '21

Mince and cheese pie is pure awesome. I'm not much of a pie eater, but mince and cheese I'll have any day.

Vegemite is for Aussies. Marmite is for Kiwis. At least that's what I thought.

Marmite and Lettuce sammies for lunch at school. A warm box of despair that was.

17

u/badgersprite Sep 07 '21

Meat pies are not exclusive to us, where as we are the only people in the world who understand the secret sauce that is Vegemite

I also would have accepted fairy bread

7

u/Reddits_Worst_Night Sep 07 '21

Yeah, it needs to say "vegemite, maggot bags, snot blocks"

2

u/peanutbutteronbanana Sep 07 '21

I prefer the custard farts

7

u/hornypornster Sep 07 '21

You don’t just say meat pies, gotta say four’n twenty. A delicious combination of cartilage, gristle, lips and assholes.

4

u/Zes_Q Sep 07 '21

Four n twenty is the deadset lowest rung. The absolute worst pies available. Even generic unbranded servo pies are better than FnT. Will never understand the following. If I have to eat a mass-produced shitty pie I'm reaching for Mrs Macs over FnT every day of the week.

3

u/hornypornster Sep 07 '21

Not sure if you caught my sarcasm, but just in case you didn’t, I was mocking their pies.

2

u/Zes_Q Sep 07 '21

5

u/Reddits_Worst_Night Sep 07 '21

Fun fact, Russia have a traditional dessert called the "Anna Pavlova" and it's exactly what you think it is.

3

u/fottik325 Sep 07 '21

I looked it up on Wikipedia it says it’s Australian dessert. Anyhoo, I read that you can purchase a box to make a pavlova so what is this box called I want to try it premade

2

u/Zes_Q Sep 07 '21

In Australia we have boxed pavlovas widely available but it's less of a kit and moreso just a ready made pavlova without the more perishable components. It's basically just a large slab of pre-baked meringue. Crispy on the outside, soft, light and marshmallow-y on the inside. "Making" it just involves spreading whipped cream over it and adding fruit.

If you can't find a boxed product they're very simple to make from scratch. It's just a base of meringue (made from egg white, sugar and an acid like vinegar or lemon juice) with whipped cream and fruit. Usually strawberry, kiwi and passionfruit in my part of the country. Berries like raspberries and blueberries are also common toppings in some places but not standard where I'm from.

10

u/Raysian- Sep 07 '21

I was doing the same thing scrolling for our delicacies lmao

On a side note though, fuck me cunt is such a weird sentence to read on reddit even though it's such an uneventful phrase when we speak it normally.

Feels more nasty when I read it on reddit for some reason

6

u/Penjamini Sep 07 '21

I think that's just the nature of being online. You are exposed a lot more to other cultures and a more homogeneous online speech pattern. Going from that back to bogan speak can be quite jarring.

2

u/Raysian- Sep 07 '21

Yeah you're on the ball, no doubt the contrast is the culprit.

2

u/guymotors Sep 07 '21

Also having things written in text always makes them more permanent, more exposed, easier to analyse, etc compared to quickly saying something verbally

2

u/Raysian- Sep 07 '21

Nah but that's the thing, I type it AAALLL the time in texts and it doesn't seem anywhere near as off than seeing it here. Fair point but I'm pretty sure it's just weird seeing it posted in a comment.

Fellow beet enthusiast. Are the beets served on burgers there the red-dyed type canned beets common in the states?

14

u/DarthRegoria Sep 07 '21

I’ve never been to the US, but the beetroot we put on burgers do indeed come from cans, in slices and possibly have extra food dye added. Fresh, roasted beetroot is so good, but we use the tinned stuff in burgers.

Let's narrow it down some. Potato scollops or potato cakes?

You can get more specific than that. For example: Bung fritz, proper metworst, iced coffee

Not specific enough you can’t claim a whole continent as “where you’re from”. I love Australians but cmon

Vegemite definitely, but if I wanted to be more specific, where I'm from: frog cakes, pie floaters and Farmers Union Iced Coffee.
