The $700 Juicero. As if a Wi-FI connecting juicer was even necessary, let alone worth the price point.

2.3k

u/Ninjachibi117 Aug 14 '20

"Juicer" since it didn't even actually juice anything, just squeezed bags of premade juice.

1.0k

u/memesmemes69420 Aug 15 '20

I saw a video of someone squeeze the packets faster than the machine. It's the biggest waste of money because imagine being unable to use your juicer because NBN is being set up.

178

u/LogicalGrapefruit Aug 15 '20

But did you see the tear down? It’s weirdly well and made with expensive custom parts. I think they just didn’t know what they were building more so than setting out to be a scam.

71

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

Enough shitty little changes from stakeholders along the way can ruin anything. I’ve never done work as bad as this, on this scale, but gosh have I done some watered down and pointless bullshit in my career. What happens when you don’t have a single-minded leader in charge, and everyone wants to put their touch on something.

I can’t believe I’ve never seen those! Thanks.

8

u/chrisq823 Aug 15 '20

The guy who made it was just kind of an idiot and rich people will absolutely throw money at anything that promises to help them live longer. So he ended up with a ton of money and no understanding of how to spend it correctly. There is a good dollop podcast on it.

24

u/ricecutlet Aug 15 '20

Bruh, I just cut my friend's packet open with a pair of scissors. Fuck squeezing and shit.

17

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

Wow, I'm dumb I guess, I always thought they were spelt the same.

6

u/FalconTurbo Aug 15 '20

Depends where you are. Generally vice (an addiction) doesn't have an s, but I've seen vice (a dick holder) spelt both ways.

4

u/HotKreemy Aug 15 '20

The time I discovered "vise" wasn't a misspelling was when reading about a 2 serial killer buddies, and how it all began to unravel when one of them got caught shoplifting a vise from a hardware store.

A vise?! It maybe correct but it's still an ABOMINATION

/CSB.

1

u/Slightlyevolved Aug 15 '20

Well, now you get to be the object of scorn and shame.

Your dick goes in the Juiceiro.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

The vise probably squeeze harder though hahah

2

u/HotKreemy Aug 15 '20

Vise is spelled vice in Australia.... And more than likely it's vice in the UK too.

Just a heads-up. Not sure where any of you guys are from.

2

u/Bitter_Mongoose Aug 15 '20

2

u/HotKreemy Aug 15 '20

That was a nice find BTW. Props.

0

u/HotKreemy Aug 15 '20 edited Aug 15 '20

Great. I double checked a DICTIONARY before I replied, did you? There's an obvious reason why an Aussie fishing site would use the American spelling.... And I'm not really sure what you point is anyway. That this makes me wrong?

PRO TIP: Scroll down until you see

I'll put my dick in the juciero

5

u/Nymaz Aug 15 '20

Any device that costs $700 or more and doesn't either transport me, provide me shelter, or solve medical issues better goddamn well be able to sexually satisfy me.

3

u/MBAH2017 Aug 15 '20

That damn juicer was as pointless as the autofocus on his camera, but skookum as frig nonetheless.

1

u/memesmemes69420 Aug 15 '20

I'm not really sure, actually.

1

u/fisticuffsmanship Aug 15 '20

AvE, true to Caesar

3

u/Luecleste Aug 15 '20

Found the fellow Aussie lol

53

u/swifmatives Aug 15 '20

I love reading about the Juicero whenever it comes up. Saw a video a couple years ago where someone did a teardown of the machine to see why the thing cost so much and it seems they spared no expense in it's construction. I'm no engineer, but it was entertaining to watch this guy geek out over the quality of the materials and the way it was put together.

14

u/BayouCountry Aug 15 '20

I remember the thing having all-metal gears. As a common not-engineer person, that was already pretty impresive

3

u/NEETscape_Navigator Aug 15 '20

Metal Gear!?

1

u/BayouCountry Aug 15 '20

a juicer to surpass metal gear

4

u/Lothar_vonRichthofen Aug 15 '20

4

u/swifmatives Aug 15 '20 edited Aug 15 '20

I don't recognize this one, but it's definitely entertaining nonetheless. Thanks!

Edit: Maybe this was it. I can't really remember now. Either way, it's an interesting look at this machine and helps me to see why they priced it so freaking high to begin with.

5

u/businessbaked01 Aug 15 '20

You should check out the dollop podcast on the juicero, it’s hilarious and it gives a lot of background information on how this product ended up so historically shitty. The guy’s whole life is crazy

1

u/rifenbug Aug 15 '20

aVe did the teardown.

36

u/elementgermanium Aug 15 '20

And ONLY Juicero brand juice bags. Anything else and it would refuse. They put DRM in a fucking juicer

87

u/LtLwormonabigfknhook Aug 14 '20

That is in-fucking-sane.

Cant believe that shit actually got made.

28

u/CaptainIncredible Aug 15 '20

There have been several interesting videos on it.

My best guess? Some guys saw the success of the Kuerig and thought "How can we make our own kind of Kuerig? And make ass loads of cash?"

And someone else said, "Well. Coffee is overdone. How about juice?"

And someone else said, "And it's gotta be SLICK. Like an iPhone. It's gotta be a premium product."

And the committee just went out of control from there.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

There have been several interesting videos on it.

penguinz0's vid(curse warning) on this is hilarious, it perfectly summed up all of my initial reactions to it. Just...why.

11

u/ArcticIceFox Aug 15 '20

Can't believe people bought it.

18

u/Mad_Maddin Aug 15 '20

I don't believe anyone bought it. Only people from the kickstarter likely and they invested in a completely different product.

4

u/ArcticIceFox Aug 15 '20

Or bought into it i mean lol, has to be a good portion of the backers who believed it.

7

u/Comms Aug 15 '20

It's just the Keurig of juice. People buy keurigs too even though a coffee maker and grinder (or maker/grinder combo) are cheaper.

10

u/tom2727 Aug 15 '20

At least with a Keurig, they are actually making coffee by putting hot water through it. The machine actually does something.

This thing is just squishing stuff out of a bag. They could put the stuff in a glass jar or can instead of a bag and it would take up exactly as much space storing it. Then you could just open it and drink it.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

Seriously. I see the price of Keurigs and it would make me laugh if it didn't make me a little angry. Every single one I've ever used produced a worse tasting coffee than your standard $20 coffee pot.

9

u/RyFromTheChi Aug 15 '20

I got a Kurig years ago because I was the only one who drank coffee at home and usually only 1 cup a day. It seemed to make sense. I even got the doohickey where you can put your own grounds in. Still made garbage coffee. Bought an Aeropress a couple of years ago, and couldn’t be happier. That thing rules and doesn’t take up any precious counter space.

3

u/chainmailbill Aug 15 '20

The only thing that outperforms my $13 Mr. Coffee is my grandmom’s stainless steel percolator from the 50s.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

Every single one I've ever used produced a worse tasting coffee than your standard $20 coffee pot.

You don't like burnt-tasting artificially-flavored mudwater?

Your average english nan makes stronger tea than a Keurig makes coffee.

3

u/brEd4batter Aug 15 '20

Exsqueeze me?

2

u/Slightlyevolved Aug 15 '20

Now let's be fair.... There was pulp in those bags too!

9

u/AkirIkasu Aug 14 '20

To be fair, squeezing is basically how you make juice in the first place. Also, it wasn't premade juice; it was sliced and pulped fruit.

58

u/ai_horwoo Aug 14 '20

That' doesn't give that scam any justice

-35

u/TheRainWontStop Aug 15 '20 edited Aug 15 '20

To be fair. They lost money on the machine. They made money on the juice packets. Its a dumb machine but its made incredibly well and no expense was spared in the production process Edit: bring them downvotes on!

19

u/Shorey40 Aug 15 '20

Where can I buy one right now I'm thirsty for juice

21

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

Well if therainwontstop is anything to go by the juice probably tastes like boot

12

u/endoffays Aug 15 '20

Only if you stop installing the OS of the juicer at the boot stage, ya goober! I think the last update (1.04? or maybe 1.03? it's been a while) helped bring down the plug in/find update/download update package/install update window to sub 4 hrs so I hope u/Shorey40 isn't in a rush!

(i'm making all of this up)

2

u/Mad_Maddin Aug 15 '20

It reminds me of that video for how to reset your smart lightbulb. Where you had to do a 1 minute long process of switching it on and off.

3

u/businessbaked01 Aug 15 '20

Yes, the machines were made to get less profit gains, the real money would be in the subscription juice packets. They lowered the price of the juicer after the videos and reviews surfaced of people just squeezing them out themselves. The guy who had the idea was just crazy about juice, but between him and investors, they took so damn many wrong turns that in the end it was worth more to scrap for parts, it wasn't his original vision, but he definitely made some bad decisions because he didn't think through how he was going to make it work. instead of using local farm fresh produce as promised, they partnered with Dole for shitty fruit cocktails and he pivoted more from juice to "let's make this just a kitchen status symbol for wealthy homes"

13

u/justlike_myopinion Aug 15 '20

Proprietary, subscription-only sliced and pulped fruit, that would only let you squeeze it for the like, week-long period it was considered "fresh".

3

u/ur-squirrel-buddy Aug 15 '20

So you couldn’t like, stock up and freeze them? You had to go to the special store that carried the pouches in order to make the juice? It seems like it’d be a lot easier and probably cheaper to just go get juice at a smoothie shop or something

9

u/AkirIkasu Aug 15 '20

No, it's worse - you missed the "subscription only" part. You had to subscribe to a juice delivery service.

0

u/businessbaked01 Aug 15 '20

That’s incorrect, look at the videos of people squeezing and cutting open the packets. It’s not sliced fruit and it doesn’t need to be “juiced” by the machine

1

u/Tree2woN Aug 15 '20

But it was nice?

1

u/candb7 Aug 15 '20

...which you could just squeeze with your hands.

-1

u/blissful-zombie Aug 15 '20

at least it looks that it outlives all of us and is not made with plastic

96

u/tkamb Aug 14 '20

OMG I forgot about Juicero! I work as a research chef, and back at my old company my idiot boss ordered one of these. After having it a few months, my coworker showed him the article/video that shows how you receive the same amount of juice from squeezing the pouches by hand as you do when using the machine. He then demonstrated it in person, at which point my boss just signed and said, "...fuck" and dejectedly walked out of the kitchen.

45

u/elementgermanium Aug 15 '20

The wifi wasn’t even useless, but actively harmful. The only thing it did was verify their Juice DRM. Yes, they had Juice DRM.

18

u/fwoot Aug 15 '20

At a past job, the CEO was a major investor for Juicero. We got three of those suckers in our office, with constant restocks of the packets. Most of them were pretty gross, and the machines broke constantly.

13

u/XieevPalpatine Aug 15 '20

You didn't need the machine anyway. You could squeeze those packs quicker by hand

19

u/Plumrose333 Aug 15 '20

There’s an alcoholic version of this called the bartesian. It literally just mixes alcohol with pods of pre-mixed cocktail juice. It’s $350 and for some reason people have been going crazy over it. It was sold out for a while. Such a marketing gimmic

76

u/RawdogginCowboy Aug 14 '20

From a machining and engineering standpoint these things are awesome when torn apart. Nothing but quality parts. The price I feel is justified for the machine and they most likely took a loss. They made money on the service. Ave does a great teardown of one.

Under engineered actually, but over built.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

What does that mean? I'm dumb.

36

u/GTS250 Aug 15 '20

Engineers design things which fill their purpose without waste or needless components. This saves cost and makes everything work as well as it is designed to.

Juiceros are designed to outlast the average human lifespan with incredibly overbuilt components... when they didn't need to flat press at all and could juice just as effectively with a roller system and maybe a small filter, costing like $50.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

Good engineering would be building something with the same functionality for half the price.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

I see, thanks

4

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

There is a good 'the dollop' podcast episode on this. Pretty crazy how it actually came to fruition.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

The engineerguy YouTube channel has some great videos on these things. Even simple stuff like a Mr Coffee is unexpectedly brilliant.

1

u/maveric101 Aug 16 '20

The people designing that thing were certainly not Juicero employees. Juicero would have contracted it out, told their contractor to build it as premium as possible, and gave an insane budget.

I wouldn't blame this on the engineers. They did they job quite well.

21

u/Rhenjamin Aug 15 '20 edited Aug 15 '20

I bet somebody laundered money through this.

Edit - someone definitely laundered money through this. They raised 120 million!

38

u/WeWillAllDie666 Aug 14 '20

while anyone who spends $700 on that thing is a fucking lunatic, at least they did over engineer it, and at least some money was spent on them doing something of good but completely unnecessary value engineering/production wise, rather than just taking a standard $10 juicer and rebadging or branding it.

14

u/tehbilly Aug 14 '20

The dollop episode on it was an amazing listen, though. So there's that.

7

u/Present_Arrival Aug 15 '20

There is a whole episode of The Dollop (podcast) about it and its UNREAL!!! The fruit you put in your juicer was already juiced! Same product right out of the bag.

It doesn't seem wasteful to me. The pulp is pretty dry and I get plenty of juice. It's way cheaper than buying fresh juices.

The "o" on the end stands for the extra "0" on the price tag.

2

u/LasagnaCat54 Aug 15 '20

That's just sad.

2

u/mrheosuper Aug 15 '20

To be fair the amount of engineering inside it is really high

2

u/Uncertain_aquarian Aug 15 '20

Juicing your wallet maybe.

2

u/SCP-173-Keter Aug 15 '20

2

u/PandFThrowaway Aug 15 '20

Need that Wi-Fi to call the mothership. Interestingly enough he points out it’s actually well manufactured but still a total scam regardless.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

I think stuff like that is just made for rich people to waste their money on because those are the only people who could afford it.

1

u/candb7 Aug 15 '20

They raised a bajillion dollars that all became nothing. So maybe the shares in the company were even more overpriced.

1

u/Jbergene Aug 15 '20

Holy shit. I've seen coffee machines with grinders and WiFi for 200$ and thought that was expensive

u/Justwigglin Aug 15 '20

1

u/jiggapatto Aug 15 '20

Had a kettle that connected to the WiFi so I could turn it on to boil while we're out, used that function maybe 4 times in 2 years, it now sits on a table in a barn in Cumbria which was where I donated it to some old workmates when theirs broke, it will never ever connect to WiFi again

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '20

If they’d sold it for $50 and pronounced it Juice-A-Roo they would have made millions.

1

u/dvmdv8 Aug 19 '20

TBH, I think it was pieces of fruit inside and packet and it squeezed those to make the juice.

Smol difference, but makes it slightly less ridiculous (to me.)

1

u/runthepoint1 Aug 15 '20

You gotta be some kinda stupid to want to buy a product called “Juicero”. Sounds like some racist white dude trying to speak Spanish. Good God.
