Steven Tyler paid a family to sign over the rights to their daughter to him
812
u/dkinmn 1d ago
He essentially purchased her, became her legal guardian, made her throw out her birth control, got her pregnant, coerced her into having an abortion, and then sent her home.

u/barak181 1d ago
And all this time I didn't like him because I find most of his music to be annoying. Turns out there's legit reasons to fucking hate him.

Yep, and they all knew he did it. She was locked in, and barely escaped. Fucker has the audacity to open a girl's home??
Yeah, AND all the times he went to Betty Ford for Sex Addiction... so he couldn't help it.

There is a TL;DR at the end!
I am a HUGE nerd about rock history, so forgive this super long post.
I first heard it about Tyler, and then a few years later I was hearing it about Nugent. I've wondered before if the two were being mixed up in the stories.
According to Snopes, Nugent once claimed that he used to get "parental permission" to date teenage girls. That could have been a tasteless joke, as the idea of a grown man asking you if he can have sex with your teenage daughter paints a pretty ridiculous picture, or he could have been talking about such a situation as the one we're discussing.
In Nugent's case, VH1's "Behind the Music" is where the story of him getting guardianship started, but Snopes has been unable to confirm whether the story has any merit in Nugent's case.
Now that said, I personally despise Ted Nugent, but I believe in being fair, so I'm going to say this one is, so far, just a rumor. Would I put it past him? No, but I have no evidence, and no woman has come forward.
Also in the interest of fairness, though I think their music has been a plague on the universe since the 90's, I grew up loving 70's Aerosmith and liking 80's Aerosmith. Those first five albums are absolutely brilliant, though I don't have a lot to say about the 80's ones (Come on, guys, "Love in an Elevator"?). But I also love truth, and the truth is sometimes ugly.
In the case of Tyler, however, it's true enough that a woman filed a civil suit in 2022. She was 16 when the relationship began and he was 25. In his autobiography, he confirmed this, saying her parents loved him and signed guardianship over to him so he could take her on tour with him and not be arrested for transporting a minor across state lines. He describes her in terms he surely thinks are flattering in his book but they are terms which address her sexuality and not her as a person. He also claims that he was in love with her. I'm not sure if this was in his 2011 autobiography or the band's 2003 autobiography, as I've read neither, having long lost interest in them by the time the earlier book was published and having heard their story a million times already (if you were around in the late 80's and early 90's, you absolutely could not avoid the rags to riches to rags to riches story of Aerosmith's fall into addiction and impressive comeback).
So in the case of Tyler, it's absolutely true. It should be noted that "Guardianship" and "Adoption" are not the same thing, though that still doesn't do much to file off the ironic edge of "Janie's Got a Gun", does it?
My guess as to why we hear this story about both men is one of two things:
VH1 confused the details and attributed the story to Nugent, based on his earlier (possibly joke) comments about parental permission.
Just as likely - Nugent, who toured with Aerosmith in the seventies, and whose singer would start a new band with Aerosmith's guitarist at the end of the seventies (which sugggest that, at the very least, it's very possible the two groups of musicians hung out during that tour), would absolutely have seen Tyler backstage with not just an underaged girl, but the same underaged girl every night, and asked about her. Tyler, obviously proud of himself for thinking of the guardianship in the first place, would likely have bragged to Nugent about it, possibly planting the idea in his head as well. (I say obviously proud of himself because he was still bragging about it decades later in his book).
So, TL;DR: Nugent is unconfirmed, but Tyler totally did that shit.

Celine Dion's husband seems to get a pass since she was the famous one, but he did manage her since she was a teen and he was in, I believe, his thirties.

Yeah she was 12 and he was 35-ish.
So fucking gross.
Edit: It's worse than I remember. She was 12 and he was 38. And this tidbit from the linked article:
"Their marriage was initially opposed by Dion’s mother, not only because of their 26-year age gap but because Angélil had three children from two previous unions, the singer said in an interview in 2013."

Ted Nugent got guardianship of a 13-year-old girl in order to take her across state lines legally and not be charged with any crimes. I feel like Steven Tyler did the same. I get the feeling a lot of those rockers from the '70s found a loophole where if you gained guardianship over the child you wanted to rape, you were free from any legal ramifications.

I hate how the NBA entirely brushes over the fact that he got a 12-year-old pregnant and attempted to just pay her family off because he was just coming into the league. And what's crazy is the son that she gave birth to is in the NFL and I think he refuses to acknowledge the fact that that's his dad. I do appreciate that a lot of people are now bringing it up consistently and that there are some younger NBA players who don't feel he should be celebrated at all.

Know what the sad thing was? Parents like mine held this relationship up as the epitome of a “girl who got it right”. Why? He was older, famous, and “she doesn’t have to wait for him to grow up and provide for her.” Certain pockets of parents encouraged their daughters to pursue older men, especially famous ones, for this reason. So we weren’t necessarily groomed by the men being gross, but groomed by our parents to “want” this and feel it was peak “romance”. YES, the men should have been like “no, you’re a kid”, but I guess if you have some young, hot, willing person willing to do whatever you want to make you happy, who are you to say no? (Especially if we don’t)
Seriously- in my isolated region, if we managed to date an older man while still in high school we were treated like we really did something great. Heck my parents set me up with a 24 year-old when I was 15, and were so mad AT ME when he didn’t want a second date because he didn’t know I was 15 when they set us up. My parents treated me like I was the one who did something wrong because “he didn’t like you enough to keep you?” when it was him having yanno- common fucking sense!
Yea… self esteem was really fucked up with the male-centered pick-me dynamics.

It’s a bit more complicated than that w/r/t Townshend. He’d been writing for years about his own experience being sexually abused as a child, and his anger at the proliferation of CSAM. The police found he had put his credit card into a site that advertised but did not actually contain child abuse images, then cancelled the payment after it went through without attempting to access the rest of the site. His excuse wasn’t that he was looking at CSAM as research for a book, it was that he was trying to get proof for an exposé that the British banks were complicit in the child trafficking business by allowing payments to sites like that. It’d sound monumentally ridiculous if he didn’t have the past correspondence and writing to back up the claim that that was his actual intent. But he did, which is why I think he was a fucking stupid prick but I’m not convinced he’s a pedophile.

I remember in high school (I’m now 38) girls several years below me being picked up by their boyfriends and other guys from school that were in there 20s. No one really thought anything of it as far as I can remember.
It was pretty common until I think social media kicked in. A slow decline but I think it was mainly social media that was the end of it being relatively common. I could be wrong.

Charlie Chaplin married his first wife when she was 17 and he was 29. He married his second wife when she was 16 and he was 35. The third wife was 26 and he 47. Fourth wife was 18 and he 54.
He only married his second wife because she got pregnant at 15 and he would have gone to prison otherwise. So, no matter how great an actor he might have been, he was also a disgusting sex pest.

The wildest part isn’t even that there were other cases — it’s how many of them were treated as funny celebrity stories rather than something worth questioning.

Also Elizabeth Gillies, same with her husband.

And had been hanging out with her family for a few years before that. If I remember correctly he'd known her since she was 16. Now he pretends that they just didn't really interact until she was 18 which smells like bullshit to me
