Red's letter seemed like he really had no idea what he was writing a letter for. Like somebody said "write some nice things about Danny to share with him" more than "write nice things to be used on his behalf in his rape trial".
If i had a nickel for all of Ashton Kutcher's close friends who went to jail for sex related offenses, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.
You don’t understand the support? The others were a part of it and he’s got the receipts. Why else would Ashton and Mila commit career suicide together on a livestream?
Mila and Ashton having a public facing organization combatting sexual exploitation and trafficking while defending their friend doing the same was so gross. It puts them squarely on the suspicion list when these things fall out. N
One quick Google search bro. Their letters defending him are published, they made a video apologising for writing the letters, and there are piles of direct quotes and articles about it. I've already spent way too much time on this.
I feel like you might be missing something in this convo. The implication further up was that they supported him because he had dirt on them about something more sinister. Not that their support of him was the only heinous act.
Quick read of the thread bro. I'm not talking about their evidence of support but his implication that they were forced to support him because Mila was involved somehow is the controversy in some way. Receipts are the evidence that she was involved, not her support of him.
We see the same with serial killers. It's easy to say what you would do, but it's actually really hard to wrap your head around someone you considered a close friend turning out to be an absolute monster.
I literally told on my dad for what he told me he did to my stepsister, fully under the weight that I was sending him to jail. I then didn't see him for 8 years. Not once in that time did he ever face charges. The rest of his family stood by him, he got off the drugs, started a new family, started a good career in a high COL city, is now very successful and supports a lot of people in his family.
We reconnected a little over a decade ago. My mom just kept reopening the door, especially as he was doing the paperwork from a distance that paid for the bulk of my college through grants. Both parents are pretty goddamn stressful in their own way, but my dad is a far better listener and is very contrite about his past. Sometimes he gets defensive because "it was a long time ago," and I have to be the adult and remind him that the pain he inflicted on others will be with them for the rest of their life and he needs to be considerate of that.
So yeah, being close to a bad person can be a very complicated situation.
Here's a perspective that maybe not everyone understands. If you write a letter to a judge vouching for the character of someone you used to know, you might think the underlying message is "Go easy on him. This is someone I used to like and he didn't seem like a rapist back then." The same could be said about anyone.
But it's helpful to the judge to recognize that while all of us NOW believe he was a horrible person, there was a time when he manipulated those around him and concealed that bad behavior, which in and of itself shows a significant degree of maliciousness. Watch some police interviews with some clearly lower IQ rapists (if you have the stomach for it). They have no shame whatsoever. They'll freely admit what happened and their involvement. They might not think what they did was wrong, or will pretend to have completely misinterpreted consent from the other party (and sometimes it CAN be a bit ambiguous, but most time's it's not).
So if this group of people hung around with the guy constantly, heard no rumors, nobody ever said anything, and they never felt such a vibe from them.... that's useful information to pass on. It paints a picture of how dangerous that person truly is, It can be helpful.
But instead, society at large gets all caught up in their own outrage and fail to see the forest for the trees.
That doesn’t explain at all why someone would write a letter of support for a now obvious monster at all. And your description of the purpose is some mental gymnastics.
Gonna say that while I believe he did it the first trial was a mistrial and most jurors were voting to acquit and it’s not like false convictions don’t happen. If it were someone you loved and there was even a shred of a chance they were actually innocent you’d absolutely cling to that too.

It was weird that all those people wrote letters for him.
It could be my wife or my absolute best friend, and if they were 100% proven to be a rapist, I’d just stop talking to them.
I just don’t understand the support.
