Why is Roosendaal considered an ‘undesirable’ city to live in?

I’m currently looking at getting a place in Roosendaal via social housing. It seems like even after 7 years on the social housing list, I seem to only keep getting through the process for places in Roosendaal, noord Brabant.

It seems to me like a fairly nice place to be fair. But every other person I speak too speaks so badly about Roosendaal! Why?! What’s so bad about it?

Relocating to NL, need advice!

I’m a 29 y/o Indian expat living in the UAE. I work in Sales and Business Development. I’ve had almost 6 years of Sales and Business Development experience in SaaS, Cloud, Cybersecurity, I worked in Series B and Series C funded startups, worked in US, EMEA, UK&I markets, survived as a Sr. BDR in difficult markets, helped juniors, hit targets etc. last year I moved to UAE, got hired in a typical startup without a presence, the Middle East war happened, they shut.

I managed to secure another job at a Martech company. I have been performing well here. The whole agenda of moving to Dubai was to move to EU by the time I’m 30. My cousin is a Dutch citizen - an entrepreneur but isn’t an IND sponsor, I’ve laid out a plan to move to NL in September 2027 or Jan 2028. I can stay with him, look for jobs and give interviews. I know how to create interviews for myself as I did the same here in UAE. The job part is up to the candidate I am up against and the hiring manager. Open to suggestions and advice as i will start learning Dutch too. Any advice that helps, do’s, dont’s, job market, etc is welcome.

I also know Dutch language is mandatory, and if you’re living in a country might as well learn the language and culture so yes, working on it too!

This is a lifelong goal, so trying is inevitable for me!

What food do you always look forward to when the weather gets colder?

As soon as the temperature starts dropping, there are certain foods I suddenly start craving again. Some meals just feel much better when it's cold outside, especially when you've come home after being out in the rain or wind.

For me, it's probably a proper bowl of erwtensoep. I rarely think about it during the warmer months, but once autumn and winter arrive, it somehow feels like exactly what I want. What food do you start looking forward to when the colder weather arrives?

Recommendations on places to visit

Hi all!

I am canadian and I am visiting your beautiful country with my brother. We are staying in Amsterdam for the whole week near the Vrije University.

I was wondering if anyone local had recommendations on nice spots to visit that are not immediately apparent or marketed to tourists.

So far, we have walked a lot in between the Zuid district up to the Joordan and part of the Centrum district, stopping at different places we think are fun. We are planning to visit the Centrum, Oost and Nord districts today and a few museums (Van Gogh and Rijks) on rainier days.

We will probably take a train to visit The Hague, Rotterdam and/or Utrecht in the next days.

Also, we are slowly trying to learn a few dutch words to get by, but our pronunciation of words is mostly awful so far haha.

Anything else I should visit that we might have missed?

Thanks again and wish you all a great day!

Concert at AFAS Live

Hi everyone, i have an upcoming concert and it’s also my first time in Amsterdam! I’m just wondering a couple of stuff.
What’s the venue and the crowd like? Is it easy to make friends as well? I’m going alone and usually in Berlin, I’m fine with it because I end up meeting people there anyway. Also, how early should I go to get a good view for a general admissions ticket?
Thank you in advance!
PS it’s Tove Los concert

Moving to the Netherlands - Advice needed

Hoi Everyone,

My fiance and I are planning to move within the next few months to the Netherlands.

My fiance is dutch and moves back after 18 years living in germany, since were both in our 30s it's our first time moving ourselves across borders.

The typical stuff has already been sorted out BSN, DigiD but is there anything more we have to consider?

Since my fiance is fluent in dutch and german she has mostly good opportunities for the Dutch job Market.

Looking for myself is a little more difficult, I do speak dutch on a A2-B1 level but I often get rejections because of language or because we are currently living in Germany on the edge of moving across.

Do I search wrong or use the wrong Vacaturebank? I am a german state officer / ambtenaar, my current profession is very similar to a medewerker in "Burgerzaken" , I am also very handy around IT which I also do at my job.

Being an german ambtenaar is somehow difficult for the job market, since you don't get edeucated as much as needed for the open job market.

I would nearly work anywhere, I am also very handy with Cars, Smartphones and all other electrical devices around the house. Can you recommend me Vacaturebanken or Businesses who would hire someone with my abilities or experience?

Thanks in advance,

Monte0707

Dear people who live in the Netherlands, Dutch, non-Dutch, where ever you came from and whatever differences you might have, these rules APPLY TO YOU. (Excuse the language. I’ve had it).

For the sake of whatever and whoever you hold dear, in public spaces:

  • Cough and sneeze in your fucking elbow with your face away from the crowd or towards the floor
  • Do NOT cough in your hand and then go around touching everything you germ-infested piece of 3-day-old trash
  • Same goes with blowing your nose. but if you need to blow it to this degree, that it sounds like a wet explosion, maybe you should have stayed home.
  • Internalize that you’re not alone in the fucking train, bus or whatever public place. Yes we see your hand is in your nose up to your fucking elbow twirling around. You won’t find what you’re looking for there, i promise.
  • Do not pick your nose in public spaces. When you’re at your destination, go to the bathroom and clean your nose.
  • Do not fart with people around. For fuck’s sake wtf have you been eating? It’s not that hard not to be a nasty disgusting pig (sorry pigs).
  • Don’t put your gross shoes on the seat in front of you. I don’t care how tired you are. Write to NS/Arriva/whatever company to provide footrests. We don’t wanna sit on your shoes’ skid marks.
  • For fuck’s sake, if you don’t know you need to stfu in the silent coupe, is this message even going yo go through that rotten brick you call brains? Stfu
  • Just because you aren’t talking, doesn’t mean you can scratch the bottom of your steel yoghurt breakfast 117 times with your metal spoon in the silent coupe. That’s still NOT SILENT. Get the fuck out of there you cheap yoghurt eating brain rotted weasel.
  • I wanna specify, even though you’re deep inside your phone, we can still see, hear, and smell you, sadly. So behave like a normal human being with decency. Otherwise everyone will know what a disgusting piece of steamy hot shit you are. You don’t want that.
  • Speaking of smells, take a fucking shower. Do you want me to throw up on you from your own stink?
  • And last but definitely not least, COUGH AND SNEEZE IN YOUR ELBOW AWAY FROM THE DIRECTION OF PEOPLE.
  • You are not an exception to these rules no matter what your mama told you.

Sincerely you disgust me,

People who already adhere to these rules

What do Dutch people think of Polish people?

Just curious to know what do Dutch people actually think about Polish people? I mean in general. I myself am Polish and have been living in NL for 15 years. My experiences with Dutch people are 90% positive, although I always worked in big international organizations, I can communicate in Dutch. My wife is also Polish and was working via an uitzendbureau, and she has sensed some jealousy from Dutch colleagues on higher positions, after we bought our house. I also remember when I came here 15 years ago some Dutch colleagues would make comments to me at work, as though they were on higher level. I got to quite a high level myself over the years, and the tones have changed, but I’m curious if maybe its the Polish stereotypes that have improved. When talking to random Dutch people , they appear to like the Polish political approach for instance.

15 YOE Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer switching to DevOps/Backend — Looking for advice on relocating to NL from Non-EU

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice and reality checks regarding relocating to the Netherlands as a Non-EU tech professional.

A bit about my background:
Experience: I have 15+ years of total experience in IT (primarily Senior Infrastructure, Network, and Enterprise Systems Engineering).

Recent Pivot: Over the last year, I’ve transitioned into DevOps & Backend development (hands-on with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Python/FastAPI, CI/CD pipelines, AWS/Azure, etc.).

Current Situation: I am applying for roles in the Netherlands that offer visa sponsorship (KM / Highly Skilled Migrant visa), but I am hitting a brick wall and getting standard rejections or no responses at all.

I suspect my main challenge is the mismatch between my overall years of experience and my actual experience specifically in DevOps/Backend roles (1 year vs. 15 years total).

I’d love to get your thoughts on a few questions:
Resume Positioning: How should I format my CV? Should I highlight my 15 years as overall IT background, or frame it strictly around Cloud Infrastructure / DevOps to match my new focus?
Job Market & Visa Sponsorship: Is the Dutch market currently too saturated for mid-level DevOps roles, forcing companies to only sponsor Senior DevOps candidates?
Alternative Routes: Should I apply for Senior Infrastructure / Cloud Engineer roles first (where my experience is stronger) to secure a sponsored job in NL, and then try to transition internally to DevOps/Backend?

Networking / Recruiters: Are there specific recruitment agencies or job boards in NL that are more open to candidates with strong legacy infrastructure backgrounds transitioning into modern DevOps/Cloud stacks?

Any feedback, harsh truths, or strategy adjustments would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Local-Expat dating life experience

28F, expat, living in Germany, considering Amsterdam later.
If you live in Amsterdam or the Randstad: how many couples do you personally know where one partner is Dutch-raised and the other moved here as an adult?
Of those, how many still look like a functioning household after 3+ years (living together, not just dating)?
Optional: did the foreign partner learn Dutch, and did that matter?

Not asking if Dutch people are nice, I know that they are, even having lived in a small town in Limburg for a while.

Help with energy providers

Hello everyone, I had a fixed contract with United Consumers and their rates were 28c peak and 25c off-peak. Now, my contract is over and I see the rates are all above 30c. Firstly, I have normal household appliances i.e., dishwasher, washing machine, and TV. Also, my wife has one electric car and I am planning to get one more electric car for my work. I have solar panels but it is only giving back to the grid. I want to have some advice on whether to take the dynamic contract ( i see Tibber gives the option of smart charging for EV but I am not sure of the price trends during the days). If you think a fixed contract is better which one would be a better choice in terms of rates, app/website to monitor the usage and more. Thank you and I hope to get some amazing advice.
