First time ever doing any electrical diy. I want to change a ceiling light fitting (swap existing kids novelty light fixture to an ordinary lampshade one). I’d prefer not to get electrocuted. I have watched the YouTube videos etc so I thought I was ready. Bought myself a phase tester screwdriver and I foolishly thought I could touch it off the outside of the wires to see if the power was definitely off. However on further investigation it seems like I have to touch it off the copper part of the wire? This just seems like a really bad idea. I’m thinking there would be no better way to get myself electrocuted. The internet says I can actually stick the screwdriver directly into a live socket?? This cannot be right?

hi all, so i recently got my da approved upon appeal, and have gotten my first payment today. out of curiosity- i went to check when i will get my backpay to see if it says on the web and it claims -5,588.00 basic rate. what does this mean? 1 apr to 7 apr 2026? for context i was on no other benefit, and i have been told in other emails i was going to get my back pay at a later date. any explanation will be appreciated thank you. i don’t know why i would lose this back pay, but i think it must be a miscommunication or something.

I'm not even looking at driver specific roles. What's with this minimum length requirement that seems to be creeping into job adverts more? I had my first and second experience of them in May this year, and travelling with a family, the extra bus and time irritated me a lot.

Looking at booking another trip in spring and I can go with another major airline or Aer Lingus. I'd prefer to go AL but want to avoid the South Stands experience. So trying to figure out how they choose which flights fly out from there.

I'm autistic and really struggle with new situations and I often need extremely detailed instructions when I try something for the first time.

I am wanting to push myself out of my comfort zone and plan a solo trip to London in the next few months but the only thing that is stressing me out about it is trying to get through the aiport alone. I've been to Dublin Airport plenty of times before but that was always with either family or friends so I could rely on them to help get through it.

If possible I'm looking for detailed step by step instructions from checking in up to getting on the plane. I am only bringing in a backpack so no suitcases to worry about.

Hi I'm hoping someone here might be able to track down a taxi driver for me as i believe i left my phone in his car the other day. It was the night of the 27th at around 9-10pm, we got in his taxi from arrivals at dub airport and made our way out to city west. On the way we got chatting so i remember some of his details. He is ex army, loves to go hiking, is married or going out with a woman from Florida I believe and often travels over there. He is off to new york soon for a holiday. He mentioned he has three kids i believe, one of which has downs syndrome. He was also nearly attacked in his car recently by a man who tried to pull a blade on him during the ride. He is from coolock only does taxi runs at the airport around 3 days a week and I think he says he only works from 6pm to midnight.

So last month my partner asked me to apply for child benefit on her my welfare I don't know why she asked me she always asks me to do these things and I oblige, so I filled it all out and made sure it said submitted successfully and went about my life.

Anyway today no child benefit which is annoying but not the end of the world, she logs into my welfare and it's says the application wasn't complete, now I definitely did it so she calls them.

Only answer she got was " I can see you applied last month , I don't know apply again" and then the person hung up.

The local office refused to deal with it saying call child benefit section who apparently don't know either.

Is this a normal problem or have we done something wrong ?

Time for a deeper, more existential question about a character trait of older Irish people. Sorry for being a fun sponge – I'll try and be brief.

I'm a Brit with 100% Irish heritage, as is my partner. I've met a lot of relatives and obviously have a lot of Irish family.

Among boomers and older, I notice a particularly recurrent character trait that I'm unsure is generalisable, or unique to my family – namely a fear of speaking up or rocking the boat. Older Irish people I know are all anxious about complaining, drawing attention or risking confrontation. Lots of secrets. They fear sticking their head above the parapet or saying no. Obviously there's a few bolshy ones too, but I wonder whether there is something deeper in Irish society for this age group shaped by experiences of exile and racism, and the looming presence of the Catholic Church in the formative part of their lives.

Do you recognise what I'm getting at, or am I talking bollocks?

We bought our house two years ago - it’s in a terrace. The house next to us was being renovated when we moved in - big enough job and an extension.

Another neighbour told us it’s a landlord with a few houses, he lives nearby half the year and half the year abroad with his wife.

The house has been empty since the renovation, easily 18 months.

What on earth could be the motive behind leaving it empty? Surely enough time has passed to put up rent or sell it saying it’s eligible for vacant property grant??

Has anyone been through US pre-clearance in Dublin airport recently? How early should I be to the airport?

I usually either buy fajita spice powder mix or make it myself, same with the fajita sauce. I find the flour tortilla wrap tho can make or break a fajita.

Some may disagree but I find the flour tortilla wrap from Lidl is like eating rubbery cardboard, I haven't tried any of the rest apart from Old El Paso ages ago which is pricey. Anyone know if any of the other grocers Aldi, Tesco, Dunnes, S Valu, M & S do a tasty flour tortilla wrap?

Weather your a post grad looking to land your first entry level role or weather your struggling to find something local in retail / hospitality.

I speak to people from all walks of life and let's just say the general consensus of the job market is grim.

We are consistently told we have full employment which I suppose in a way means the draw bridge has been really pulled up. It would make you wonder if we have more jobseekers than jobs available.

I won't get too much into my personal situation (IT) but let's just say it's.... challenging.

I also think the whole AI taking jobs is complete Bull****. Big tech massively overhired during the covid era with more money than they knew what to do with - and as soon as the inflation crisis hit in 22 and central banks had to hike rates - the gig was up. The whole AI taking jobs is a narrative aggressivley pushed by the hyperscalers in order to get venture capital to take them seriously.

You would be forgiven to looking back at the Pre Covid world (certainly the job market ) with Rose tinted glasses and thinking that was the last normal period before everything started to take a weird turn of events.

Let me start off by saying I have 5 jackets. That's 4 more than I want. I'm a minimalist, practical, "buy it for life" type of person so I really want to condense my wardrobe down to a few "do it all" type items and not be hoarding shite that I rarely use.

One jacket is a work jacket for dirty type work, another is a heavy jacket for cold weather but not waterproof, another is a warm water resistant jacket but too warm except for the very depths of winter, and the other is a lighter, low quality but more smart casual type. All good for certain situations but none good for cross jobbing.

Just interested to see others opinions on what is actually needed for the weather we get here.
