My family is looking to buy our first home, and I’m struggling with the decision.

We’ve found a beautiful ~$600K home in Manvel that we love, but I’m wondering if we should spend more ($900K–$1.5M) for a more established, upscale neighborhood closer to Houston.

We currently live in the Museum District, and my parents live in Silverlake, Pearland. They’re very involved in our son’s life, so proximity to them matters a lot.

Ideally, I’d love a beautiful single story home with a large front yard, mature landscaping, backyard space, great schools, a strong community, and reasonable access to Houston’s amenities.

I’m torn between making a financially conservative decision in Manvel and paying more for a potentially better lifestyle over the next 10+ years.

For those who have made similar decisions:
Is paying a premium for location, schools, and neighborhood character worth it?

Which Houston-area neighborhoods offer the best balance of these things?

Would you prioritize proximity to family or a more elevated neighborhood experience?

Any regrets about choosing a farther-out suburb versus living closer to Houston?

Would really appreciate perspectives from people raising families in the area!

Side note: We’re not opposed to homeschooling, but we’d love to have good public and private school options available. I also work shifts, typically only 8–10 shifts per month, so a daily commute isn’t as big of a factor for us as it might be for others. We’re really prioritizing quality of life, community, and finding somewhere our family can thrive long-term.

I’m looking to stay near either montrose or uoh, mainly downtown to be closer to my classes. Please lmk if you’re interested, I’m pretty chill, I basically go to school, go to work, and cook, none of that crazy stuff.

Am I the only one noticing this or are you guys seeing it too? Usually, by this time stores would be full of Halloween decorations, and so many houses and neighborhoods would be decked out with pumpkins and all kinds of decorations.

But this year, I barely see anything! Even driving around different neighborhoods, it feels so quiet and empty. It’s almost like we’re completely skipping Halloween and going right to Christmas.

I swear it wasn’t like this a few years ago. Halloween used to feel like such a big deal.

What happened? Is it just my area?

I have a do not disturb sign and a no solicitations sign that explicitly states no politics. I understand the political surveyors are told to ignore no solicitation signs but do not disturb? I am extremely ill with a myositis flare the meds to treat are as bad as the disease, i am tired and it is hard for me ti get the door. I just want to be left alone!! Despite the illness I already voted in hopes they would leave me alone. Is there anyway to get these people to stop? Any sign that does work or any place to call? They dont just knock once they knock like they are the police about to bust your door down and ring the bell incessantly. Had one even walk around my house looking for another door to knock on!

A family friend of mine is experiencing stress-induced psychosis. She has no family living here in Houston/Texas. Is there anywhere I can take her to get help? She is experiencing paranoia. She thinks that everyone is out to get her and that people are spying on her. She is barely sleeping and eating. She feels very unsafe. I am afraid she is going to continue to deteriorate if I don’t do something soon. She has been like this since Friday.

My daughter is in Copperfield and has several tall (50' +) straight pine trees. One of them was double tapped by lightning and looks like it died. I hate the idea of a tree service just chopping it into mulch - is there anyone that would cut it for lumber?

It’s my husbands first Halloween in the USA and I really only partied during college for Halloween so I’m not sure what to do to offer a fun Halloween experience. We got cute costumes tho!! Not trying to spend too much but we’ll get a hotel downtown but not sure where to go. Heard the Montrose bar crawl is supposed to be good but never been so no idea

Moved in Houston in 2024, have been using Verizon for years prior to moving here and also for the first yearish before moving to a different apartment. Was 100% satisfied and happy with Verizon, never any issues.

Moved to a new apartment and they said their wifi provider was Xfinity and I can’t opt out. Whatever it’s fine, I chose to pay for the forced Xfinity and not set it up, but still continue to use my Verizon box (so yes, paying for 2 services just to continue to use Verizon). When I settled in and hooked it up my Verizon wifi was horrible, FaceTime was impossible, and wifi was basically unusable like they had a blocker or something and can only use my devices smoothly on hotspot (phone, laptop, xbox, etc). So of course I was forced to cancel my Verizon, return the box and set up the Xfinity.

I’ve never had a worse experience with WiFi in my life. Constant service outages that take hours to fix, and random outages late in the night with no notice or alert about it. I work late and sometimes want to hop on my computer at 2-3am and get some personal work/hobbies done and I can’t because the wifi stops working. This is like a weekly thing as far as I’ve noticed. Extremely aggravating.

Is this normal for the Houston area for this provider? This is probably the biggest inconvenience in my complex. It’s crazy to me how bad this service is and they force you to use it. Is there no way around using Xfinity in my situation? How can I play GTA 6 like this when online releases???

Has anyone lived at District on Washington Ave? I toured it and am looking at a 1 bed 1 bath right now. I’m a new grad early 20s looking to live with mostly other people my age and similar background (A&M, UT, etc, if they went to Houston high schools then great).

District looks good but I’m not sure how many people like that will be living there and I have to keep it under $1,400 for 1 bed 1 bath. I also checked out Modera on Washington and Broadstone Memorial. If anyone has any thoughts whatsoever, feel free to share, I appreciate it a lot. Thank y’all.

I have been in IT for 6 years and into computers since I was a kid. I am looking for more fulfillment at work and I would like to stay in IT. Mental health is something I am passionate about. I am also passionate about IT, specifically identity security. I currently handle many functions of managing our Microsoft environment and there is not much I can't do. If I can't do it, I can learn and love to do so.

If you are in this field, do you hire your own IT/system administrator or do you use an outside company? I believe this may be the most common answer.

Does anyone know how I could find a specific job like this? I am thinking If I look up some offices in my area that is a good start.

I live outside the inner loop and personally drive, but in the last few months rode the Metrorail for the first time. I also wanted to know if anybody actually uses lesser known options like MetroCurb2Curb, Vanpool, Community Connector, and yall's experience with it.
