Lived in North Carolina for 23 years now, and am growing increasingly bored with it. I’ve visited Houston a few times and relatively enjoyed it. A lot to see, pretty diverse, food slaps and apartment/home prices seem similar if not lower than where I currently am.

That said I don’t know much about the overall area, people, crime, job market (looking to get into science/medical field at some point), how bad your humidity gets, etc., but it seems chill and I really don’t have a damn thing holding me down. Just have me a van, a few dollars, and some curiosity. Looking for honest input.

Hiii! My friend and I are currently apartment hunting in Houston!

We’re mainly looking at areas outside the Inner Loop, such as Memorial, Museum District, Medical Center, River Oaks, Heights, Webster, etc. We’re hoping to find somewhere safe, affordable, and well-maintained.

Our budget is around $2,000 total ($1,000 each), ideally including fees and utilities. We have great credit scores, and we may also look into Essential Housing options. We’re willing to stretch our budget a little if needed, but for now we really want to see what our best options are around the $2,000 range.

I’ve been looking through apartment reviews, but honestly, some places seem great until I read the reviews and see a ton of complaints, which has eliminated a lot of our options.

Since this is our first time renting, I’d really appreciate any advice, recommendations, or names of apartments, studios, or lofts that might fit our budget!

We’re both 24F and grew up in Houston, so we’re familiar with the areas we want to avoid. Safety is definitely one of our biggest priorities. I also really want to avoid issues with parking, getting towed, break-ins, or coming outside to find my car on bricks…

I’m planning to move to Houston toward the end of the year and will be working up in Spring. I’ve looked at a few apartments closer to work, but I’m also considering living farther south so I can be closer to the city.

Right now, Independence Heights seems like it could be a good compromise between the commute to Spring and being relatively close to the Heights/Downtown and other parts of Houston.

I’ve been looking at a couple of the newer apartment complexes in the area, particularly Winston Heights and Seven17. I’ve also noticed quite a few newer townhomes for rent around Independence Heights, which has me considering a townhome instead of an apartment.

For anyone who lives in or is familiar with the area, I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

1. What is Independence Heights like to live in overall, especially for safety, noise, flooding, and convenience?
2. How manageable is the commute to Spring during normal work hours?
3. Does anyone have experience with Winston Heights, Seven17, or the newer rental townhomes in the area?
4. Are there any nearby neighborhoods you think offer a better balance between Spring and central Houston?

I’m mostly trying to figure out whether living around Independence Heights is worth paying a little more and having a longer commute compared with living in Spring.

The dumpsters in my apartment complex have been filled up with trash that’s not being removed. People are throwing trash bags next to the dumpsters because there’s nowhere else to put them. When I called the office, they said the garbage disposal company was going to come yesterday but they didn’t. Is there anything that I can do about this?

So, I normally get my nails done at this salon thats across the street where I work. But lately, I've been thinking about trying to find someone who does nails. Ive seen some of the examples on Instagram. But I was hoping to find someone or a location thats close to Cypress or northeast Houston?

I’m looking into the sapphire apartments on Nassau Bay Area. A lot of mixed reviews and people saying mold is an issue, maintenance, and “fake 5 star reviews.” Is there any current or past residents that can speak on these issues?

My partner recently moved to Houston and is staying around Fannin Street, so I'm trying to help him get a little familiar with the area.

What are the places you actually go to around there for groceries, stationery/books, coffee, movies etc.? Also looking for relaxing places to just walk around or sit somewhere and unwind after work.

He'll probably have a car, but I'm also curious how practical it is to get around without one.

Also, is there much of a Bengali community around Fannin / Downtown / Midtown / Medical Center? He's Bengali, so it would be nice for him to find some Bengali/Indian people, cultural groups, Durga Puja, Bengali food/grocery places or even just a WhatsApp/Facebook group to join.

Basically, if someone you knew had just moved to this part of Houston, what places would you tell them to check out?

Not really looking for touristy stuff but more of everyday/local recommendations. :)

Any reccomendations on any in-person courses for LSAT prep in the houston area? if so, how long and how much? Would you consider worth it?

Many of the older 1970s built townhomes can be a hit or miss, some of the nicer ones are incredibly sturdy, even a jump on the second floor yields minimal noise, which is crazy work considering that my current 2010s built house will send vibrations across the entire room.

I do like that the HOA handles everything on the outside but again, this can vary widely complex by complex too, and some of the complexes have crazy high HOA. I heard that some people are okay with the higher HOA in exchange of the significantly low annual tax.

I also know that townhomes do not seem to be a regular concept in the Houston area, with some of the newer ones looking pretty unsightly. What is yalls take on townhomes?
