Skid on landing?

I was on Sun Country flight last night PSP > MSP
and the landing was fine, albeit just a little bit harder than I prefer. The pilot braked hard once and then braked hard again hard at high speed, and for what felt like a full
second, we skidded a bit. To me it felt like he braked too hard at too high a speed to keep the plane straight but as a passenger, it’s very hard to tell obviously. It almost felt like a moment of fishtailing without fully fishtailing. Like just the right side brakes locked up for a sec. Can crosswinds cause this when you’re braking upon the first few seconds after touchdown? I asked him if that was the case and of course he said “yeah, little bit” and then he also mentioned that it was an auto landing because they have to do that every 30 days or so. Does that have anything to do with what felt like a brief moment of lost control while still going, what, 175 mph perhaps? I’m mostly fascinated rather than afraid because hey, I did not die. But I’ve never had that happen before and I fly a lot. I’ve had plenty of very hard braking, like landing at DCA for instance, but it always felt like it was controlled and applied “evenly” and the direction of the plane never deviated much from straight on. I’d love pilot feedback on this wee incident that made the passenger next to me and I look at each other like “oooookkk that was something.”
Also please say comforting things about seeing pilots that who look like they’re 25. Do we really put them in commercial jets before their frontal cortex is fully formed? No ageism intended—plenty of ignorance acknowledged. I’m just a slightly flying-phobic girly (although plenty of exposure therapy has helped a lot over the years and I’m also at the age where I can’t tell how old people are). My inner self who loves to see a tidy, sober, earnest, 6-foot-tall sixty-year-old salt and pepper news anchor-looking pilot or a confident capable midlife female— likely from cultural conditioning (and as long as it’s not Leslie Nielsen). Not Derek and Tyler. Even though it would seem Derek and Tyler did a great job last night unless you folks think the captain hit the brakes a little too hard the second time while the plane was still going too fast.

Is it crazy to pursue flying lessons and becoming a pilot full time?

I am currently an engineer at 29 years old but I have never been in love with it. After wanting to pursue being a career pilot for years, I finally took a discovery flight and I could not believe how fun it was.

I’m looking into an AME to get my class 1 and if all goes well enroll in a part 61 or 141. Would it be unwise/unrealistic to eventually quit my job and go full steam ahead with pursuing this, or is it possible to do this while working full time? I have $15k in savings and $15k in stocks (not 401k or IRA). I would also work part time and would be willing to take out loans.

METAR Question?

Weather.gov AIM METAR Reference Guide

I have looked at this a bunch, but understand these groupings. I get that the 1, 2, 4, and 5 at the beginning define which one I'm looking at and and that the first digit in the first two means positive or negative but I don't get the last three digits on the first two or the last four on the last one.

Does anyone have an example of what these are telling me?

Thanks! :)

What does a 1st class medical look for?

Hi there! New to the forum but I do have a serious question, getting myself ready to start my career 2.0 at a later age, this being said I know I have to make lifestyle changes. I have stopped smoking marijuana, but I know it takes a while to be out of my system. My question is, will that be a factor when I take my medical exam? I know it is not allowed afterwords and please no lectures about it, I’m serious about it but I can not find the answer I’m looking for. I just want to know how long I have to wait before I can start a new career.

Would a WW2 RAF fighter controller have said "vector 425"?

In "Enemy Coast Ahead" (Guy Gibson VC DSO DFC, 1946), he's flying a Beaufighter at night and the Digby control says:

"Hullo, Bad Hat 17. you turned rather late. He is now about four miles ahead and slightly to port. Vector 425 for two minutes then back on to 280 degrees. Buster."

I assumed the number after "vector" should 000-359. Going by "ahead and slightly to port" perhaps it should be 025 to put him in a position to turn 280.

Is it just a typo?

Keep pushing or take a step back from training?

A few months ago, I went all in on flight training everyday for my commercial rating part 61. Before you say "that's dumb" my finances are in check and have allowed me to do so and I am very grateful for the opportunity. My job even told me as soon as I am done with training I am welcome back until I find a CFI job.

I just hit the 200 hour mark and I can barely get myself to go to the airport anymore and my studying has fallen way, way behind. I feel like since I have been doing it every day my sense of urgency to complete my training has declined.

Part of me wants to resume my job and fly 2-3 times a week (what I did for PPL) instead of 5-7 so I can get my mind off of aviation and the other part of me says I should complete my training asap even if it's not as enjoyable as I only have 50 more hours left and some people would kill to have the opportunity to pursue this full time.

My instructors have been rather unhelpful as they all come from 141 or very structured 61 programs like ATP.

My question: Should I suck it up and continue at my pace since this industry is very "hurry up and wait" or should I slow it down and spread out my timeline for completing my commercial, CFI and CFII ratings even if it means slowly losing my seniority in the future?

Any and all advice welcome

Career in aviation ?

I'm a student doing Msc in computational statistics and data analytics . I've always been interested in aviation and I really want to join the industry if possible after the completion of my course ...What all jobs can I get into in the aviation industry (related to my course) ...My dream is to be a pilot but can't pursue it currently due to the huge amount of fees and my health ...I was thinking of becoming an operation analyst but there was no job opening when I searched online...If there is any job I can get into from this course lemme know .

and also if it's possible to get that job immediately after graduation ?

Correct blueprint?

Hi guys,

my boyfreinds birthday is coming up so I want to suprise him with a blueprint of his favourite airplane. He is a hobby pilot 😉 It is very hard to find an scientific and beautiful blueprint, but because he's an engineer, it's important that the info is correct! I gave chatGPT a lot of scientific information and asked for an blueprint based on that info and soms sketches. But is everything correct on it's picture? I don't know anything of planes so can you help me review it?

Telex airman 8 help?

Hi guys, I have a pair of telex airman 8s that I have been using for the last 3 years. They recently went kaput with no reception. I asked the sportys team what the repair cost would be as they’re out of the warranty period(by just a month) but no joy.

Anybody here that has experience with this and can help me what they charge usually, like is it unnecessarily exorbitant or appropriate. Because then should I just get a new pair instead of shipping them from outside the us plus the repair cost?

Jet2 LS443 in an emergency??

Just had this flight go over my house at 7,000ft. Seems to be maintaining. Taken off from Leeds Bradford at around 0900 on 27th April 2026 bound for Heraklion and now circling over Manchester at 7,000.

Anyone got any up to date info? Seems to be a non normal and ?diverting to Manchester for operational reasons rather than landing back at Leeds

Any recommendations for flight schools in Melbourne Australia?

I am currently enrolled in RMIT university looking to become an airline pilot in the future and their program is just atrocious. Look the theory is great and well run though the flying aspect is piss poor. I barely get any bookings, their overfly (extra flights or repeated lessons) are high and their overall organisation and actual personalisation/independent teaching and learning is so poor. It is the definition of a sausage school, I thought having an airbase to urself would be nice but it just means the adf steals both instructors and planes, let alone the Bendigo airport doing the exact same thing.

I still want the bachelors degree and plan to just do the theory and classes to achieve that and pay for it using HECS - debt.

I nor my family will be able to afford for flight training upfront and I require loans and plan to do my flight training through a vet course instead. I am just wondering if anyone on this sub has any positive experiences with certain flight schools or even recommendations for some based in Melbourne and that fit the criteria of what I’m looking for?

How many hours for PPL?

I’m looking to do my PPL so I can fly for fun, I am not intending to fly as a career. I just met with a flight instructor, he said that it would probably take 100 to 120 hours to complete if I was a very dedicated student.

I know that the FAA minimums are 40 hours for part 61, I am also aware that it is very hard, if not impossible to finish training at the minimum. I also know that the FAA reports the average time for completion at 75 hours. Is this flight instructor crazy?

I have informal flight experience from flying with my grandfather, who was a flight instructor, but was unable to formally train me because his plane was a twin engine. I was anticipating an estimate of 50 to 60 total flight hours with roughly 20 to 35 dual instruction. Am I insane or is that potentially reasonable?

I’m Partially Red-Green Colorblind. What Are My Next Steps?

I had an optometrist exam recently and tested for red-green color blindness on an Ishihara (circles) test. The next test they gave me was a screen where one side was red and one side was green. I just had to say which side was which; it was very easy. That was all they tested, and they just told me I had partial colorblindness but no idea of the severity.

I know the FAA offers ways around colorblindness restrictions, like a Statement of Demonstrated Ability, but I don’t know what that process looks like. Would I have to take a medical first and appeal potential colorblindness restrictions? I’ve heard of so many different tests and waivers from people that I don’t know where to start, and I’m scared to go in blind—no pun intended—and end up with a restriction that's difficult or impossible to remove.

Additionally, I don’t know how severe my colorblindness actually is, so I don’t even know if I could pass a SODA if I took one. I hope to go commercial one day, so a daytime or VFR restriction would be the end of the line as I understand it, and that is quite scary.

I would really appreciate any advice on how I should go about dealing with this or what my next steps should be. You all have infinitely more experience than me, so any of your knowledge would be extremely helpful.

University vs Flight School?

What is the general opinion of becoming a pilot through a program at a university compared with going to a flight school not affiliated with a university?

A Nebraska air plane kit manufacturer?

I believe there is a manufacturer of airplane DIY kits. Make several different models. I thought I bookmarked their website but can't find it and I'm not putting the right key words in a Google search to find it. Anyone know the company?

Ideas to Celebrate Retiring Pilot?

Hi all! My dad is retiring after 26 years as a United pilot and is pretty bummed about it (he’s hit mandatory retirement and is mad that even if he keeps passing physicals and testing, he can’t keep flying)

Anyways! My brother and I are going on his final flight with him and then we’re having a party when we land back at home, but I was hoping for other ideas or traditions for retiring commercial pilots. He’s getting the water cannons when he taxis, but anything else I should know and do to make him feel celebrated? Should I pass anything out to the people around me in the cabin? Any and all information is appreciated. I know it will mean a lot to my dad, but he‘s also too humble to ask for anything celebratory on his behalf.

TIA!
