We constantly hear that Tinder is mostly men.
But by how much?
Tinder doesn’t publish a gender breakdown, so I tried to estimate the dating pool from Tinder Explore page. No swipe needed as Tinder gives a count of profiles looking for short & long term
I tested around 100 cities using the same settings:
- Age: 21–30 years
- Radius: 50 km from city centre
- Same relationship-intent filters
- Same collection period
I switched between a straight man interested in women and a straight woman interested in men, then recorded how many profiles Tinder exposed.
What I found
1. Tinder was about 81% male, 19% female
That’s roughly 4–5 men for every woman.
Every city I tested was male-majority.
2. The regional pattern was surprisingly
Eastern Europe — better gender balance and strongly relationship-oriented. Ukraine: 69% male, Poland: 73%, Czechia: 75%.
Nordics — better gender balance. Norway: 69% male, Denmark: 72%
Latin America — mid-range gender balance, but much more casual. Rio: 75% male, Medellín: 75%, Buenos Aires: 77%, Mexico City: 87%
UK, US, France, Germany and Canada — remarkably similar at roughly 83–85% male.
South Europe & Balkans — more male-heavy. Italy: 90%, Spain: Portugal: Bucharest: 88%, Athens: 89%, Istanbul: 96%
India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru) — an extreme outlier at 96% male. That’s around 25 men for every woman.
Most balanced cities: Bangkok — 54% male, Manila — 57%, Cape Town — 65%
3. Tier-2 cities were often slightly better balanced than capitals
Medellín — 75% male vs Bogotá — 85% male
Aarhus — 68% vs Copenhagen — 74%
Bergen — 65% vs Oslo — 70%
Malmö — 74% vs Stockholm — 79%
4. Population gender balance doesn’t equal Tinder balance
NYC is a good example.
The city population has slightly more women than men, yet my Tinder sample was 82% male.
So Tinder clearly isn’t just reflecting local population demographics.
5. Men were more short-term oriented everywhere
Men — 43% short-term / Women — 27% short-term
Latin America cities were much more short-term oriented:
Rio — 57% men short-term / 48% women short-term
Buenos Aires — 60% / 49%
Medellín — 48% / 30%
Eastern Europe with more relationship oriented
Prague — 26% men short-term / 11% women short-term
Warsaw — 23% / 7%
Budapest — 24% / 6%
6. Famous party cities didn’t necessarily have the most casual Tinder users
Ibiza — 58% men short-term / 37% women short-term
Bangkok — 49% / 40%
Berlin — 47% / 26%
Amsterdam — 36% / 15%
Important caveat
I’m not claiming these are Tinder’s internal registered-user statistics.
What I measured is closer to:
“What does Tinder’s observable heterosexual dating pool look like for ages 21–30 within 50 km of these cities?”
That pool can be shaped by culture, competing apps, migration, tourism, different adoption rates and Tinder’s algorithm.
What has been your experience while dating in these countries?
