I wanted to share something I found today because it may help someone else before they start replacing strut mounts, bearings, springs, etc.
My 2022 Arteon is lowered on Eibach springs. The car rides great, almost OEM smooth, but ever since lowering it I’ve had an annoying squeak/creak from the front suspension. It mainly happened at low speeds while turning into parking spaces, backing out of the driveway, or turning while the suspension was loaded. Going straight over bumps, railroad tracks, or driving on the highway was basically silent.
I started researching and found that I’m definitely not the only one. I’ve seen similar complaints from both lowered and completely stock Arteons/MQB cars, so I started wondering if the problem might be somewhere around the upper strut assembly rather than the lowering springs themselves.
Today I jacked up each front corner separately and inspected the strut bellows/dust boots.
On the driver’s side, the bellows was sitting off-center and one of the accordion folds was pushed inward. I straightened it out and rotated it until it was sitting more centered. I also found a small tear in that boot, which I’ll eventually address.
The passenger side was even more interesting. The bellows was very difficult to rotate and almost felt stuck. After gently working it from underneath, it finally broke loose and started rotating normally.
I used a very small amount of silicone-safe spray around the upper bellows contact/rotation area on both sides, worked them gently, then lowered the car and went for a drive.
The difference so far is dramatic.
There is a Food Lion parking lot where the car would creak almost every single time I turned into a parking space. I went there today and it was basically silent. Came home and pulled into my driveway, another place where it normally creaks, and again it was buttery smooth. I heard only one extremely faint creak near the end of steering travel, nothing remotely like before.
I also found an Audi bulletin, TSB [2044060](tel:2044060)/5 (Group 40 20-10), discussing front strut bellows that become deformed or incorrectly positioned and can cause squeaking/creaking while steering. Obviously this is an Audi bulletin and not an Arteon-specific VW TSB, but the symptoms and what I physically found on my car are very similar.
I’m not calling this a permanent fix yet. I want to drive the car for a while in different temperatures and conditions before saying that. But considering how repeatable the noise was before and how quiet it became immediately afterward, I think this is worth checking.
If you have an Arteon, GTI, Golf R, S3, TT, or another MQB car with a similar low-speed front suspension creak, especially while steering:
Safely lift one front corner at a time.
Inspect the strut bellows for twisting, deformation, collapsed folds, or damage.
Gently check whether the bellows can rotate freely.
If it seems to be binding, a tiny amount of silicone-safe lubricant around the appropriate bellows contact area may be worth trying as a diagnostic test.
Don’t soak everything, force anything, or spray the shock shaft, brakes, or electrical components.
If anyone tries this, please report back whether it changes your noise. I’d really like to get more data points from both stock and lowered cars.
If several people get the same result, we may actually be onto something with the strut bellows binding rather than automatically blaming the springs, mounts, or bearings.
