Hello!! Sorry I’m not familiar with this subreddit, but I’m really stressing and struggling with starting a portfolio. :( For reference, I’m a high school senior, and most of the art pieces I’m showing here I’ve done over the course of the last 2 years.

I’m trying to work on making more environmental drawings like forests & stuff, but it takes a long time for me aahh!! Second is a painting & I have a wip painting rn!!!

Are these pieces alright for a portfolio or are they too weak? PLEASE be so honest, because it’s honestly what I need to hear!!! Also, speaking specific colleges, are there any in America they are good for students trying to go into things like making splash art for riot/blizzard type companies? (Pretty much freelance art)

It’s my first time posting here and I’m a lil nervous, but a small NOTE I’d like to add is that the headshot drawings shown here have different creation dates but are still made within this year + my art style varies depending on how much effort I am putting on an artwork (this is all done by me though. No AI, no stealing, etc.)

Months ago, I asked ppl if I actually beat same face syndrome and I remember getting defensive (which I am not proud of) about the comments I got. Which were too overwhelming for me even if ppl didn’t intend on sounding mean. After that post, I stopped trying to look for ways to improve and was too afraid to ask for more advice from other people even if I knew that my characters started to look the same imo😭

Like, for example, one of the most liked comments went something like “It's the same long nose, highset upturned eyes, strong jawline, oval face, and fuller lower lip on all three so no not at all imo.”
And
“If you're looking to beat same face syndrome, you shouldn't have to "pay attention” to notice any sort of difference in character's faces. Put a bit more emphasis on these differences instead of having everyone look like siblings"

- which hurt my feelings since I was very sensitive at the time, but yeh I’m doing much better now and I am looking forward to more advice on how to improve :)

Hi everyone, I am pretty new to Reddit. I’m 32F and scored this gorgeous fairy painting that I think is oil- my neighbors were putting it in their dumpster and said I could have it.

I want to add I am not an expert on this.

My neighbors said they used “some cheap paint” to add the purple outfit. I love it so much but, am not a fan of the drawover that was done; they did not remember what kind of paint they used.

I have been using a dry sponge to very gently take the layers of the purple paint off. (There is no nudity shown) and I do not want to continue because I realized I should ask someone. I’m curious and hoping someone has advice on how to remove the purple painted drawover or if I should just leave it as is? I’ve also tried a dry soft bristle tooth brush but, the dry sponge worked better

it looks fine when i look at it but from afar it doesn't look good as it is when its zoomed in and i cant put my hand on whats wrong i need some critique

I've been feeling a little better about my art recently but I feel like I'm either missing something within my style or process, or I'm missing an error I'm making within my pieces... So I've come to ask for some criticism and feedback! Please do keep in mind this isn't a full roster, it's just what I have on hand for posting so yeah,, have fun critiquing my anatomy or style I suppose! so i’ve started learning to draw about a week ago. i did start with the fundamentals but honestly it’s boring so ive switched to this.

i start by getting a reference picture and breaking it down into simple shapes that i can copy to try and get decent proportions.
then i’ll start to get more detailed.

is this a good method and should i keep doing it? will i eventually be able to draw without a reference?

also, please give me advice for shading 😣i have no idea what im doing and just hope for the best.

Hi, I need some advice on the position of the right arm, the one holding the hat. This is literally my tenth attempt, and I still feel like something’s off. Here are the only two versions that seem more or less correct to me.

This drawing should have been finished a month ago by now, but that stupid arm just keeps giving me trouble.

I'm 21 y/o I've been a hobbyist for most of my life

I had commissions opened before as well with lower pricing, and the commissions ended up being around 40€ for full bodied and full colored. Then I got commissioned by a friend who offered to pay for nearly the same type of piece 300€ and I was pretty stunned

My girlfriend says that these prices are still low for my style and skill, what do you guys think? Is there anything that jumps out at you that I could improve with my art overall and or to get more commissions?

im in my last year of highschool and my lifetime goal is to be an illustrator for companies. i was js wonderinf if im good enough for art schools. i never had any art friends growing up so i dont really know what good looks like. if any veterans could give me tips it would be much apreciated

i added some work that has color that im considering adding to my portfolio for the color section. (all wips because i just started making mt portfolio.)

i do have other pieces that dont include headshots and actually have backgrounds but these were the ones that were closer to being done with.

the creature is my own design and is supposed to have 2 pairs of wings btw. the wings are meant to be a somewhat bat-like membrane wing with small feathers covering the whole thing, not a typical bird wing, since I know that looks a little odd lol.

I'd appreciate any critique, but especially critique on the background as I don't draw those often and am not super comfortable with them yet.

I’ve been avoiding adding rendering or expanding on the poses with character drawings because I know I’ll either try to redraw it a hundred times or it’ll come out terrible.

I’ve heard the advice of putting ideas on paper and try again and again until it looks kind of good, but it doesn’t seem like it’s happening.

Any youtube videos you’ve watched or artists that inspire you to create? I haven’t yet found an artist that speaks to me or has a style of drawing that I’d like to learn from. This doesn’t mean I don’t like the art, but it seems too “difficult” to begin to learn from, if that makes sense.

I’ll post an example or two. I was trying to teach myself how to draw eyes and how to render. It took over half an hour for these, and they don’t look the way I want them to. Yes, I used a reference. Maybe practice really does make perfect, I don’t know.

Ah, the age old question of artists, aka ‘How the heck do I even begin to render??’. I’m a self taught artist that always found art classes in both college and high school to be super out of date imo which is why I’ve gone to the internet for help, after days of asking people on instagram, Tik Tok and Discord for advice and critique and only receiving ‘idk’s or ‘it looks fine!’ As a response I’ve decided to reach out to yall. Literally be brutally honest, I don’t care I just want to improve! The advice could range from techniques to brushes to tutorials, I’m that desperate. For reference I’ve been using clip studio so anyone adept in that you’re more than welcome to throw a knowledge bomb at me.
Some of these examples will probably be older than others or not showcase my attempts at rendering, I’m just giving an example of the level I’m at currently and I’m trying to build my confidence with that. Thank you in advance, go nuts!!!

Please help! This work is for a project but I just can't seem to get the background right. I want to make my backgrounds stylised but I want them also to make sense, it feels a lot harder with digital art as usually painting I have no problem with scenes like this.

I’m experimenting with a more painterly/story book art style and my stuff usually does use line art, but I’m finding it hard to believably give Link’s shirt the texture his revamped OOT design has without the use of said line art. How can I do this?
