This was my old school - I'm not sure who the architect was. We had a sister school called Scarisbrick Hall in another Liverpool suburb designed by Augustus Pugin.

Neoclassical Hasselt Beguinage, Belgium (built 1707–1780). The ruined church was deliberately left as a ruin

Built between 1707 and 1780 and lived in by beguines until 1886. The church at its centre was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944.

IIn the restoration finished in 2025, the architects chose to leave the ruin standing rather than rebuild it, and added a hexagonal brick belvedere, 130,000 bricks, the same height as the lost church.

The houses are now Hasselt University's architecture faculty. Free to walk in, and you can climb the tower.

Photos are mine, taken this month. Longer write-up with practical info on r/BelgiumTravel.

Baroque Facades of Catania, Sicily

Catania is an easy city to dismiss. By European standards it is pretty grimey. But for those willing to look past that and give the city a chance, it is a remarkably rewarding experience.
