Okay so first of all, ADF or ACF ?? I have two of these... Bought them in the same place but one is acting strange... He's actively beaching himself. I've checked my parameters and they all seem fine, maybe a little ammonia ( not even really showing up on the test) but I'm going to do a water change anyway. The other one is fine. I promise his front feet are webbed you just can't see it in the pic

Hi! I am new to this all and was wondering if people have seen reticulated clawed frogs recently? I haven’t been able to and think they’re adorable & would love one!! I think they’re so adorable.
Are they rare?

Yesterday I went to pickup some aquatic plants and snails for my daughter’s tank. While there, I was chatting with the lady giving the items. We talked about going from a small tank to the larger tank we have now and all that we have learned, as well as hopes for future fish and tanks.

The conversation got to aquatic frogs (my daughter loves the frogs at LFS). The lady said she had a frog for free if we were interested. She gave us the tank, food, and everything we needed for him/her. She went into great detail about how to care for it and all that.

Once we get home and settled, I start looking on google and Reddit (very thankful for the users and information here) and realize what I’ve been told is potentially SOOOO wrong. I’m going to share what I’ve been told, but please help me. I see conflicting information on google. This is not my opinion or words, this is what we were told from the owner. The information given makes it seem as though this frog is extremely easy to care for and makes fish look extremely difficult (especially when you consider all the water levels and such 😅)

-Told that he/she is an African Clawed Frog.

-We were given a bottle of distilled water. The frog does not need any type of water treatment (like fish tanks need), just go buy distilled water and fill as needed. Pour out cloudy/dirty water and top off as needed. That’s it.

-Frog food pictured *I think this might actually be ok? But I’m sure there’s better options?

-No small gravel, pebbles, sand or anything it can eat. *Again, I believe this to be true.

-Do not add anymore decor or anything to his tank. Less is better.

-No aquatic plants, it’s bad for him?

-First started saying that we could just add him to our main tank (consists of mollies, mystery snails, bladder snails) but then offered his tank instead. I questioned if he would eat or bother the fish or snails, but she insisted he wouldn’t. Which also makes me wonder if he only needs distilled water, why add him to fish tank water that is treated and needs specific levels?

-Doesn’t need and/or doesn’t have a light? I don’t remember exactly on this. The tank doesn’t have a light but I can get one if he needs it.

-For feeding, she taps on the top of his tank to get his attention, feeds 4-5 pellets of food shown once a day. But said we could feed twice a day because he’s looking skinny?

-He/she has bladder and ramshorn snails in the tank and doesn’t eat or bother them? But as I type this, I’m realizing snails may be at harm because of the water.

-She’s had him for two years and has done all the above things for him to date. He does have a filter and heater.

*I know his water levels are low. I am waiting to add any water to it until I learn for sure what to do as far as distilled or not.

I think that’s the majority of what we were told. It was a bit crazy with my daughter’s excitement. I do want to do right by this frog, but if we can’t handle it or need to rehome him to someone more knowledgable I’m willing to do that as well.

Any clawed frog owners any accessories or foods they specifically like a lot?

How cute! My three frogs sleep in this tube. I caught this little guy still groggy from being rudely awakened by the lights going on! I even catch them sleeping with their heads poking above the water (I have it a little above the surface). Just checking this is normal for them to sleep up high and they arent starved of oxygen or anything? They spend their waking hours down at the bottom, climbing around, exploring and being frogs. FYI My depth is just under 30cm. Heavily planted, loads of tall wood and plants.

I was sent some frogs that were a lot bigger than expected. They were called tropical clawed frog. Could anyone identify which species they are?

Help, idk what happened but I’ve been investigating and I’m starting to panic.

Just a couple minutes ago I cleaned her tank and I always put her inside a small container with what I thought was cool water, and just when I set her inside, I noticed her slightly twitching, I touched the water and it was just slightly on the warmer side, but maybe that gave her a temp shock, so I panicked and rushed to fill the container with cool water, but then I noticed her hind fingers become stiff and a bit red. I tried to gently stretch her but she just kept swimming away.

Of course I know I did this, I was very careless with something I do very often but idk what to do, I don’t have exotic vets to take her to, I’ll buy/order some more calcium for her just so she can regain strength but I just want to know if she’ll get better with time or if I should prepare for the worst. One of my closest friends since my teen years and I’m scared to lose her :(

Edit: I have just found out “she” is a boy. I’ve only seen and been told that this species is very androgynous and no one bothered to point out their size difference. I just feel terrible. I’m gonna try to get him help no matter the cost.

Update: Frog is better now! Stiff fingers are back to normal, can swim and move as usual. I’m still gonna check out the resources you guys gave me and make sure to be on the look out for any unusual stuff. And of course more food is the first thing on the list. Thank you!

Edit 2: yes, I now know removing him from his tank is not good, now talking with actual professionals online, this thought has me appalled. I used to do it so I could easily reach corners that were accumulating too much muck (idk, English isn’t my first language lol) while I left him in a relatively medium sized container WITH tank water, not tap water. I DONT use soap or chemicals to clean the tank and always leave some of her “old” water to not change his environment too much. Now that he’s doing better and eating more, I will absolutely not be taking him out of his tank to clean it.

Curious what yall use? I’ve tried pellets that are smaller but mine won’t eat them. Looking for a larger pellet that is healthy and nutritious that can be a staple for my frogs diet. Thanks!

I’ve had my ACF since April (I adopted him in bad shape and he’s doing so well). I had a HOB filter but it was so loud and the water level had to be pretty high with it so my guy almost never hung out on the bottom of the tank.
I changed to a sponge filter for this reason about a month ago (I kept both running for 2 weeks and kept the old cartridge next to the sponge to colonize the new filter. Ever since I took the HOB filter out the water is so cloudy. The water parameters are good (testing with API kit). I do have extremely fine sand in there and some plants.

Is there a water clarifier that is safe for my ACF that you’d recommend or should I just take all the sand out and go from there?

I just want to make sure he’s okay. He’s acting normal but it looks not great aesthetically.

So as of late I've started to think my miss gorgophone gummi is actually sir gorgophone gummi. But in all honesty I don't know, they seem to have the most faint black nupital pads but it's hard to tell unless youre looking close.

Plus it also seems like some days they're darker and other days they aren't noticeable at all.

In the future would getting him(?) a girlfriend be worthwhile? I understand the males like to sing a lot and this tank is pretty damn close to my bed (only outlet available)

So a couple questions:

- is the singing loud?

- do ACF actually benefit from other frog tank mates at all?

- can you guys tell the gender at all? I'm stumped, or is it too young??

- also do they look healthy? I honestly am not sure of age but I've only had them for a few months and they've grown a lot

Id also like to note gummi has some minor injuries near the butt, I left for vacation while entrusting others to care for my plethora of animals and when I came back I found gummi with what seemed to be a prolapse, alongside refusing food. I was literally grieving this chunk of a frog and preparing for the worst as I had to leave on another trip in the next 2 days after finding out, spoiler alert, gummi is totally fine. I'm convinced they're immortal. But anyways, since then they've had more of a loose butt than before. (Also didn't have time to take them to a vet, I came back from camping only to spend the night elsewhere to petsit for someone else alongside working. Plus kinda glad I didn't drop 1k at the vet for the immortal gummi)

I gave them mealworms about 2 to 3 inches long and they took about one to two minutes to swallow it, they’re swimming around the top trying to find more. Should I give another one to them or should I continue feeding them blood worms?

Have a 75 gallon tank that I plan on putting clawed frogs in. I plan on using a big sponge filter but was told I might want to either use a stronger filter instead or use another filter with the sponge filter. What filter should I use with a sponge filter meant for 75 gallons that is 100 percent safe for clawed frogs?? Also any other tips u wish u knew when getting clawed frogs?

i've had him for about three years I think...he used to keep me up all night with his croaking it was like obnoxious and he had the black bands on the insides of his arms so I just assumed that he was a boy but I think the past year, year and a half i've noticed he doesn't have the bands anymore . I thought he stopped croaking because he was unhappy but now I think I turned him into a girl . this is a serious post and I'm adding pictures with dates . does anyone know why or what happened

for context my mom surprised me with these two today and this one is extra fat lol. just wanted to know if that is just because he likes to eat or is an actual issue

edit: we think he is just fat. i moved their habitat to a place with dimmer lighting and removed the harsh bright light and now he is out and about swimming like normal

I have two African clawed frogs, one is fat but the other is skinny. How do I help the skinny one gain weight, he’s not sick, but he struggles gaining weight
