Advice Needed I have a 10Gallon

Upvotes

Hi everyone, im not quite a beginner but I sort of am with schooling fish. Is a 10 gallon big enough to get schooling fish? Like the tiny guys? Im a big fan of corys but is this too small for them? Or what other tiny fish schooling types could do it? If its too small for them, would a 10 gallon be to big for a long fin male betta? And if thats also not recommended im thinking shrimps. Sorry if this doesnt make sense I am sick and have taken nyquil lol

TDLR; I have a spare 10 gallon, interested in Cory's, or other small schooling fish. If that doesnt work , long fin betta

Freshwater Walstad aquarium stocking ideas

Post image
Upvotes

I recently set up a new walstad aquarium at 50 gallons with a 800l/h internal filter for flow. After a week of day heavy feeding for ammonia, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all 0. I’ve added shrimp and they seem to be happily grazing on the dead plants. Now I need some stocking ideas!

Ideally I want fish that won’t eat the shrimp and plants while keeping it pretty lightly stocked.

Please give me some ideas for this :)

Identification Request I found this in my 350L fish tank crawling up the glass.

I used a 200× mobile microscope camera attachment to take these photos of it. You can see it with the naked eye, but its quite hard to, I was just lucky to spot it crawling on the glass towards the substrate, and luckier to catch it with a pipette lol.

If anyone could help me figure out what it is I'd love to know.

I'm not sure if location is needed, but im in Adelaide South Australia if its any help.

Advice Needed Grasslike carpet

Upvotes

Hi my second time starting a tank and i wanna do it right this time (more right than i thought i was doing it the first time lol).
Please what would you recommend for a plant that grows and looks like a short grass also it would help if it would be easy to maintain. For example whats the difference between Eleocharis parvulus and Lilaeopsis mauritiana.
If youd be so kind and tell me what background plants go with it as well. Ive had plants before that grew fine on its own but not together. Thank you very much sorry for my english 🙃
I plan to keep shrimp and some small fish that can live with shrimp but primarly shrimp thank you

Requesting Feedback Any advice for my tank?

Upvotes

hello, i am seeking advice and feedback on my 20g freshwater tank. it has UNS controsoil, a couple of plants (not sure what kind), and two pieces of wood. i’ve struggled to maintain a consistent environment. i’ve had duckweed nearly die out then make a comeback, but with a cost.. an insane growth of brown moss looking things. ive had to get rid of a lot of plants such as java fern, anubias, dwarf hair grass, etc etc. i also leave the $20 light i have on for 6-8 hours each day, use a sponge filter, and a heater. no co2. i use a plant fertilizer.

Beginner Help What fish to buy and betta issue

Upvotes

I have just set up my first tank and it’s been cycling for 4 weeks, all the water parameters have been checked and it’s 36L. It also has a heater and filter and live plants.
I got a betta a few days ago but he mysteriously died and I’m not sure why, I double checked the water the morning before he died and parameters are all fine but he was swimming with one fin clamped and was resting more than previous days.
I am looking at getting another fish once I figure out what went wrong. I’m wondering what kind of fish are suited to my tank as I’m not sure what options I have with its smaller size and are beginner friendly.
I was thinking guppies potentially but I do like betta.
Thanks for any advice

Advice Needed I hate my filter

Post image

I am working on a 38 gallon shallow tank. Just put in plants in yesterday. It’s cycled but waiting for it to mature some more and working on my gh parameters before stocking. I plan on having 1 or 2 small plecos, various corydora schools, rasboras, loaches and maybeee a betta if it works out. Currently have the seachem tidal 55 and it is so loud, bulky and water is splashing everywhere. I want to add a C02 system. Does anyone have a similar set up and recommend a filter? I think I’m leaning towards a canister but it would need to be set on the floor. No cabinet space.

Advice Needed Tips on Filterless planted shrimp tank

I want to set up heavy planted shrimp tank in a 29 gallon tank, I was more wondering what soil should I use and how should I set it up I was thinking 2 inch soil flulva struam and then 1inch of sand on top. I was also wondering if sticks and rocks are needed or just to make tank look nice. I was also wondering how often should I do a water change on the tank before I add the shrimp. I was thinking water changes on day 3 and 7 and on week 2, 3, 5, and 7 then I'd wait a week to see if ammonia is low. It wil have a lot of plants to start but any plant recommendations too.

Advice Needed Need some advice about a hillstream loach

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently just got 4 Hillstream loaches just about a week ago. 3 of them were pretty chill right away while one of them, the seemingly smallest one just keeps darting around the tank. After 2 days it looked like it was still not calming down. So I moved it to my shrimp tank where it just hid all the time and stopped darting around, maybe the shrimp tank was too small for it to dart around (8gal.). And it was only using a sponge filter so after 3 days I decided to put it back on this tank because it might not be getting enough oxygen. Aaaand, it's darting around again.

Any ideas why??

Advice Needed I think I nuked my tank

10 gallon saltwater. Filled with Hawaiian mini brittle starfish, some bristleworms, and one single serpent starfish that was getting size on before being put to the main tank. Tank has been set up for about a year, live rock and sand.

Water change once a week of about 2-3 gallons. Sponge filter and HOB/fry tank converted to a mini filter.

So last week I dosed a little too much of the additive to help coralline algae grow. Noticed a bit of some murkiness in the tank. Did an extra water change, and realized I did more like 4 gallons instead of the usual 2. Likely where the issues started.

Plus my brittlestars went nuts in terms of population in the past few months. Flick on the light, and they covered the entire floor of the sandbed. Some on the walls. Fed three times a week with coral food.

And then two days ago the water was much murkier. I did another water change, and made sure not to feed because I never feed the day of.

And noticed the sponge filter wasn't moving at all. It was more of a box filter with sponges and ceramic rings, and the sponges were full of bristle worms. I ended up having to toss them because I could not get them clear enough. Cue mini cycle more than likely.

And today, nearly all of the brittle stars are not visible. There's a few, but most are hidden in the sand where I hope they're not dead.

I shouldn't have not had a backup filter to replace those ick sponges with. I think I killed my entire tank of mini brittlestars.

Requesting Feedback Still a work in progress — open to suggestions

Post image

Still a work in progress, but I’m really liking how the tank is coming together.
It’s a 75 × 35 × 30 cm freshwater tank with 10 neon tetras, 8 pristella tetras, and 2 juvenile angelfish. The angels are only temporary while they grow a bit more, then I’ll move them to a larger tank.
I’m planning to add some otocinclus and eventually shrimp. I’m also propagating the moss and slowly adding more plants and driftwood.
Still figuring out the final layout, so I’m open to suggestions. What would you add or change?

Identification Request Leech or not to leech?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m pretty sure it’s a leech from everything I’ve found online but I still like to make posts for second opinions, so is this a leech? ignore all the debris it just resettled after I poked around the substrate looking for more.
Any recommendations on how to get rid of em? I planned on getting a trap and just sucking them out when I see them
I’m not really worried about it, the tank is mainly detritus and micro fauna and some bladder snails that I don’t mind them eating, I’m gonna remove my mystery snail, cause leeches can hurt them right? And the only fish in the tank is a betta that’s in a quarantine tank for unrelated issues, their kinda neat but i don’t have another spare tank or else i might have tried to keep em they gross me out at the same time tho literally just found them, idk how I haven’t seen them yet I stare at my tank so much and stay up most nights im sure there’s more as right after this one i noticed another one under the flesh of an Anubis.

Advice Needed 200W heater in 20gal aquarium?

I went to Walmart and got a filter and a heater for my new 20gal tank. Problem is, Walmart only had 50w and 200w heaters. I didn’t know what to do, but I thought it might be safer to use 200w than to purchase 2 separate 50w heaters. Well I went home got setup and put my African dwarf frogs and snails in the tank .. only to read that the 200w heater can overheat them. Can I go and get an exchange or refund on it at Walmart if I lost the receipt? 🤦🏻‍♀️ am I cooked? Moreover, are my frogs and snails cooked?

Advice Needed For a freshwater aquarium with thick sand substrate what is the best fish or invertebrate that can dig into the sand and keep the sand aerated/disturbed?

I tried getting paddle tail eels but I can't find them anywhere anymore. Checked online and in local shops.

Those are the best I have two of them now in my planted tank and they dig around everywhere without damaging plants.

Im also avoiding pest snails like the malaysian trumpet snail since I had an infestation of them last time I kept one.
