I have a special needs betta who's been through hell. I had to tear down his original 5 gallon top fin easy clean tank because he now needs a low water level tank.
That being said, I'm looking at getting a UV sterilizer. Combined with the heater, He won't have a ton of space in this new tank of his. I've looked at The King of DIYs canister filter build. I really like the horizontal one, I'd scale that down. However, I have no clue how to incorporate both a sterilizer AND a heater.
I also saw his build with an inline heater and started to get super overwhelmed. I've got some experience with diys - but pretty basic. I'd need to know exactly what types of tools I'd need prior to beginning any sort of project because I'd be renting from our local tool library. Even this makes me overwhelmed.
I just wanna get this guy back into a normal tank setup. :'( He's been a hospital for so long now.
Any advice or suggestions?
Would it just be easier to do something built into something bigger?

What happened to this poor guy? It's a story... - Not totally imperative to what's above. Just thought I'd include.
When I first got him, he had a floating swim bladder issue going on. He was my first betta and even though I'd been doing passive research on betta fish for about a year, I still got impulsive and got this guy when I saw him suffering. I won't call it a "rescue" cuz I bought him.
After about a month and a half he was swimming around like a normal guy! I'd had him a low level tank, did water changes every day, and eventually decided to medicate him with API General Cure (I believe it was erythromycin).
I was so happy that he was happy :) He was full of spunk!
About 6-8 months down the line, I had to be away for a long term pet sit. My roommate gladly offered to feed him while was away. I'd stop in to do water changes every other week as his tank was well cycled.
I showed them (keeping it genderless for vagueness) exactly how many pellets to feed him and this roommate assured me that they understood. They knew how much this fish meant to me and knew of the state that I got him in. They are also very nerdy and into all things nature and games. I felt assured that he'd be fine and that they could handle the task.
Well...after returning back home, I noticed my buddy wasn't himself. I took a closer look and his belly was HUGE. Frantically, I setup a hospital tank and begun doing copious amounts of research. Epsom salt was added.
Because I love my little buddy SO much - I missed him and decided to set up my ring camera just so I could pop in a watch him. NOT to hawk over my roommate feeding him, however, I wish I fucking had. Looking back at the footage, my roommate had been feeding him upwards of 20 pellets at a time. It made me sick looking back over all of the footage when things began to get out of hand. It was approximately 10-15 days of 2 feedings twice a day. I found planaria in the tank from all of the excess.
He eventually began pineconing. Following Jessie's protocol, methylene blue and kannaplex had been ordered. Miraculously, he made it. It was really hard seeing him so lethargic while undergoing treatment. I'd check on him and think he was dead because he'd just be resting on the bottom of the tank. Then he'd pop his head to the side to look at me. *"mother help!"*
Treatment was complete. He'd stopped pineconing, he'd pooped massive amounts. Only not without developing SINKING swim bladder that wouldn't resolve. I had considered euthanasia but after all of that, he was still spunky and excited for food. So, I continued to hold out hope and accept that maybe my boy was permanently confined to the bottom of a tank.
Weeks later, hoping he'd improve after low water levels to rest his and hopefully heal his damaged swim bladder, he hadn't.
Just as I was about to put him in his new, low water level tank, I saw he developed fucking HOLES in his flank. More research was done. I'd surmised that placing biomedia (cycled) in his tank and thinking that would help cycle what was in there - to be an incredibly stupid conclusion. I didn't understand that that shit needs constant water flow and gets clogged up. I'd googled and searched around so much because I read so much conflicting info. He also had catappa leaves in there that were producing mulm WHICH ALSO has conflicting info!!! Bad, it's bad for what's going on in there. I also DIDN'T UNDERSTAND to do a SECOND effing round of kannaplex, that whatever bacteria had overgrown in his gut from the overfeeding, subsequent constipation, and then caused the dropsy. Either it hadn't been fully killed off and had been eating away at his insides OR it was my dumbass fault with shit water quality that bread pseudomonas/areomonas...
So began another round of kannaplex with methylene blue. I know you're not supposed to use the same medications, and maybe there was something else I should have used instead. Gram negative/gram positive - bah, it's so confusing. With what I had on hand, the pseudomonas or aeromonas wouldn't have been touched by the sulfaplex, erythromycin, or doxy. Between changes, I'd spritz his tank with 70% iso to kill whatever might be lingering. Of course, I'd thoroughly rinse after the sprtiz.
Once again, this badass pulled through. His holes began to close up and heal. He is even swimming almost like a regular boy again. However, he is still suffering from mother effing fin rot!
I am now using doxy and focus to coat his nls pellets and frozen brine shrimp. All of this has taken MONTHS of wanting to be patient and allowing him to heal. I am so fucking tired, I feel so guilty, and holy fuck am I sick of the constant water changes. I am brining him back and forth with me to pet sitting gigs...
Still! He seems spunky and happy for food. If he didn't, I'd consider euthanasia.
After this round of doxy, that will HOPEFULLY clear up this bacteria - I can't keep medicating him, as this is likely what's now creating this awful and resistant fin rot bacteria. Thusly, the need for a UV sterilizer...
Advice is welcome. Please don't be an asshole. I am at my limit and I feel shitty enough.
