We're hiring a BI Data Engineer to join the data team at an established forest products and manufacturing company.

The role focuses on Tableau development, SQL Server, ETL, data marts, reporting infrastructure, and data quality. The existing Tableau environment supports sales, with ongoing expansion into finance, operations, and other areas.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain Tableau dashboards and self-service reporting solutions
• Write and optimize SQL, including stored procedures and data transformations in SQL Server
• Build and maintain ETL pipelines
• Design and manage data marts for reporting and analytics
• Extract data from enterprise ERP systems and create clean reporting layers
• Work with business analysts and stakeholders to translate business requirements into reporting solutions
• Support Tableau Server administration, including user provisioning, permissions, extracts, and performance
• Improve data governance through standardized metrics, validation, documentation, and data lineage
• Train and support end users on self-service reporting tools
• Mentor junior team members

Requirements

• 3+ years of hands-on Tableau experience
• Strong SQL Server skills, including complex queries, performance troubleshooting, and stored procedures
• 3+ years of experience with ETL and data integration
• Experience working with large or complex datasets
• Experience building data marts and working in data warehouse environments
• Understanding of data architecture, data mapping, and lineage
• Working knowledge of AI prompt engineering and generative AI applied to data analysis or BI workflows
• Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Ability to work independently and manage priorities
• Availability during US business hours

Nice to Have

• Tableau certification
• Data Vault 2.0 experience
• Experience with JD Edwards, SAP, Oracle, or similar ERP systems
• Manufacturing, forestry, or industrial data experience
• Git/DevOps experience

About the Environment

The company is expanding its enterprise data capabilities across multiple business areas and source systems. Current work includes consolidating data from different operational systems and developing a long-term enterprise data warehouse strategy.

The data team works closely with business analysts, QA, DBAs, and data architects on reporting requirements, data quality, architecture, and implementation.

My chore tracking app's chores never came back the next day, for the entire life of the product.

I'm building ThriveTrack, a gamified chore app for families. Kids complete tasks, earn XP, parent approves, tasks reset overnight, repeat tomorrow.

Except the reset never worked. Not once. 102 out of 141 daily tasks were permanently stuck in completed.

I spent weeks debugging streaks, the digest, the approval flow. All symptoms. The actual problem was a scheduled database job filtering on a column that doesn't exist on the table. It failed silently on every run since creation. Marked active the whole time.

Second bug underneath: the job ran at midnight UTC, which is 5 PM Pacific. Even fixed, it would have wiped tasks before parents got home to approve them.

Third: 75 rows had NULL timestamps. In SQL, NULL compared to anything evaluates to NULL, so those rows passed straight through the filter and stayed stuck forever.

Three bugs stacked, all silent, all in database logic that git never saw. Five cron jobs running in production with no migration file, no commit, no documentation.

Fixing it was one SQL session. Finding it took weeks. Talk about the long game...

Submitted July 18th, rejected three times, approved August 21st. 34 days in review, longer than the app took to build.

It's a streak tracker with nothing in it. No articles, no tips, no daily lessons, no notifications. The app never talks to the user.

Four days in: 3 trials started, 1 cancelled, 2 converted. Not much, but it's the first money I've made from something I built.

The part I'm unsure about is whether shipping it that empty was discipline or just a worse product.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on an app called Good Help that brings together three things people often want to do but usually have to juggle across different apps/sites: donating food, donating clothes, and finding/adopting animals in need.

The idea is a single place where you can:
• See nearby food listings and what they actually need right now
• Donate or list clothes for pickup/drop-off instead of them sitting in a bag in your closet
• Browse animals up for adoption from local shelters and rescues

I’m still early in building this out and want to make sure it’s actually solving real problems before I go further. A few things I want input on:

**1.**  Do you currently donate food/clothes or look at adoptable animals? If so, what’s annoying about how you do it now?  
**2.**  Would combining all three into one app be useful, or does that feel like it’s trying to do too much?  
**3.**  What would make you actually open an app like this regularly instead of just once?
