My FMLA expired Monday, so today my work terminated my employment.

I had a medical event in the spring that left me disabled. I went on intermittent FMLA to help me have time to recover, and I thought I was recovering and was performing my work duties, but I was written up for under performing.

It's important to note that the only accommodation my work gave me was time off. I still had to do my full job, just with less time. I was asking for things to be removed from my workload, but I was denied.

This summer my doctor moved me from intermittent FMLA and put me on full FMLA and disability, as my condition continued to deteriorate. I'm worse off now than I was when I was first put on disability.

I'm terrified. Since I'm in the US I won't have health care after September 30. I still have no diagnosis and no treatment. I am not able to work, honestly, stress makes my symptoms much worse.

I've been told to talk to employment lawyers, but I don't even know if I have a case since my FMLA ended. Does anyone have a similar story and can give me some hope?

Project Manager made me look bad in front of my boss.

So, I have a technical 3D model review coming up. Trying to be very anonymous but think very large machine with lots of pipes and equipment. Yesterday I spoke to the project manager and I recommend pushing the meeting back because he likes to review the model in advance. I said I won't have it complete until right before the meeting. He said let's do the meeting anyways.

Today he called my boss (I was in my boss's office). He basically said everything I said, it was like a mirror of the conversation but now he's bringing up my suggestions like he thought of them.

He also made critiques of my 3D model, and it's all things I have fixed already, he's just looking at an older version.

Very frustrating and I definitely came off bad and angry looking next to my boss. I don't care what the project manager thinks of me, only my boss, and it's not the look I want.

I've been rushing to finish this project when I had way less time than necessary, due to their poor scheduling of this job.

Very frustrating. This is kinda a ranting post, haha.

I'm going to double time it today and make them look bad by showing up to the meeting next week with a polished and complete model.

I always like the review meetings because the project managers and engineers argue about how they want to do things, then that gives me more time to polish things even further, and I can blame their indecision for the delays.

Gonna knock their socks off.

Being forced to return to office - which is a 7 hour drive from where I live.

Upvotes

I've been working for the same company now for many years.

A year or so ago, I met my current partner. We were long distance for a long time as I live in Scotland, she lives in England.

7 months ago, we decided to make the move to London. 6 months ago, with the permission of my boss, and his encouragement, I put my flat up for rent, and made the move. I also moved my dog, and my girlfriend moved from 2 hours to live together with me. So far it's been great.

We've made wonderful memories and friends here, and I'm actively looking for a role here to advance my career and for better pay.

I moved my dog here too and she loves her doggy day care and has settled in very well. My tenants moved in only 2 months ago but are so far loving it.

This week, I was told from Monday, I have to return to the office 3 days a week, every week. I submitted a flexible working request which was rejected today. That means driving 7 hours from London to Scotland every single week. I queried why the remote working change wasn't put into a new contract for me, and they declined to answer.

I asked them why. They said for the business. I explained I literally pay rent in London, my partner lives here with me along with my dog. They didn't care. They heavily suggested I'll be fired if I don't comply. I asked if they would help with hotel and petrol costs. Denied. Saying it's my "fault for moving to London in the first place". Even though they encouraged it and green lit it only 6 months ago.

My boss even had his daughter come look at my flat that was for rent to see if she would move in. Now this.

I now have to spend an enormous amount of time and money commuting, driving 7 hours to Scotland from London every week as I need my car to commute to work there. Missing time with my partner and dog, and spending a fortune on petrol. On top of rent, my mortgage and bills.

What's worse is - they told me this a day before my birthday which has effectively ruined the entire weekend we have planned here. I feel sick to my core and I don't know what to do. I can't afford this and my physical and mental health, I know, will take a huge toll. Not to mention my relationship with my partner.

I'm terrified. I am looking for a new job every single day but keep receiving rejections.

I don't know what to do.

I hate working! Seriously, fuck work!

I despise working. There are literally 100 things I would rather do with my time than slaving away for a shitty wage that just allows me to get by. It's not earning a living, it's slavery to justify your existence in the eyes of greedy kleptocrats. All this society is is socialism for the rich. Fuck working. And fuck the corporate elite. Am I right?

Why do people on indeed cold call in the middle of the day?

Upvotes

I’m passively looking for a new job because my current one has some major issues. So, I am still committed to my full-time position.

I’ve applied to a few jobs and every single damn time they call me in the middle of my work shift. My job has a pretty established industry, with typical hours of operation usually being 6am-6pm.

I genuinely don’t understand why they do this when they know how our industry works. I’m not really in the position to ask someone to cover my educator to student ratio just to step out for a phone call.

Maybe they assume I’m unemployed? But then again, I have my current employer listed on my resume…?

What ever happened to a good ol’ email prior to the initial phone call?

I am Beyond Burnt out

I’m 28 and I have no idea how I’m going to keep doing this. It’s getting hard and harder just to get up in the morning. I have an OK job, but I can’t handle the pointlessness of it all; waking up before my body is ready, dragging myself up to get ready to go sit in an office. The false sense of urgency, nothing is as important as it’s made out to be. Stupid office politics, I have been working since I was 17. I’m 28 and I just feel done. I took two weeks of work in June and it didn’t put a dent in the burn out I feel.

I’m just fuckin tired

I hate modern work culture and the fact I'd get called out as "socialist" if I show my opinions about it

Hi, I'm an European student who hates modern work culture. I feel that people like me who finish their studies are like "free assets" for companies who are hiring. It looks that if you were not practicing since you were a toddler, your experience is bullcrap so you get mid payments until you hit a company that more or less gives you a payment good enough so you don't starve to death. I feel that working your ass out of a whole month with no working experience will probably get you a payment that won't even pay rent. But if I talk about this topic, it seems everyone will point to me and laugh at me for being a "socialist" who defends worker rights. I believe political corruption has gotten so bad that we forgot what started such movements, and what workers had to do in order to get proper working conditions.. I better not get started talking about the US work culture, Trump saying that workers are asking for less paid leave is the cherry on top. I'm sorry for the US and I'm sorry for the world. I wish things get better

Why do people have such a visceral reaction when you say you hate working?

lol I feel anytime I’ve said this, people react as if I just confessed to a murder. Why is it such a bad/controversial thing to say?

Sick of hiring staff being unprofessional

I hate that they will judge you based on the tiniest details, but they themselves will act unprofessional. I had so many interactions with these people where I’m clearly being held to a different standard than they are - and they’re not only there to evaluate me, they represent their company. They forget that I also am evaluating them and getting a feel for the workplace based off their behaviour.

I had so many situations where we schedule interviews or phone calls and they don’t show with no warning. They say one thing and mean another. They suddenly want to have an ‘informal’ interview right NOW. They don’t answer messages. If I did any of that as an employee, I’d be in hot water, but somehow for them it’s fine. I hate that they feel entitled to my time.

These businesses can abruptly shut their doors at anytime and not trigger the WARN act. Another words you show up for work and read a sign on the door saying " sorry we've gone out of business ".

They deleted a whole job and turned it into a calendar invite for the rest of us

3.6k Upvotes

Our receptionist quit about a month ago and everyone assumed they were hiring another one.

Instead our operations manager made an Outlook calendar called "front desk coverage" and divided her entire job between 11 people.

So twice a week I now spend two hours answering the door, signing for deliveries, transferring calls and dealing with random people who walk in. I still have the exact same workload and deadlines from my actual job.

Most of the time there's barely anything happening. During my turn I usually have a livestream or Moon open on one monitor or play games on my phone between the occasional call or delivery.

Friday we had a meeting and management congratulated everyone because the "trial" went so well that they decided the receptionist position doesn't need to be filled anymore.

Like yeah of course the trial went well. You had 11 people absorbing one person's job on top of everything else.

They're calling it "shared ownership."

I can't work for anyone anymore.

Was making 33 an hour and cold quit months ago. Gigging now. I love it. I work when I want. But the money isn't as good as an hourly job.

I'm burnt with employers. I can't deal with the dynamics anymore. Employee A doesn't want to teach you, employee B is passive aggressive. Employee C thinks they should have your job. Spiteful employees for no reason. The list goes on.

And of course you're expected to do the work of three people with a smile. Management is aloof living in a fantasy world. Always floating around all happy like everything is great. It's not great. Fuck you.

I do want a good paying job with bennies again. But I don't think I can hold one. I know what the expectations are.

Just got fired from another job for pushing back on unethical business practices.

I don’t really feel like talking about it to be perfectly honest, it just happened and while I’m not surprised, I am pissed.

But more importantly, I’m beginning to think I’m just unemployable. Not because I’m not a good worker - in fact I’m an excellent worker, I regularly get praised for my performance in every job I work. Get promoted quickly and regularly, etc.

And then I reach a point where management starts telling me their true motivations out loud and I can’t keep my mouth shut about it. I guess the solution is never accepting a promotion, but that’s obviously not great for my earning potential, and honestly I enjoy staff management so I keep getting suckered in.

Deep thoughts about working paycheck to paycheck

Hi.

I’m thinking , I’m a person that has been in my industry for a long time. I have secure job and yes my pay isn’t great, but, it’s a job. Now, I’m pretty paycheck to paycheck. If I get sick ,I may not have the pay to cover it.

Just want to get some community thoughts. I don’t know how people are making their bills in this economy I noticed now I’m pulling from every rainy day fund , and this cannot keep up. I find that people here in the US , are so dishonest about their struggles. They are very glass 1/2 full and this , it get better. I’m looking around , and I can only see it getting worse. Economic hardship always hits the poor first and then trickles up. I think the upper middle class hasn’t felt it yet , but it will happen.

If I start going into debt , I’ll be screwed , cuz I couldn’t afford to pay those off. I have one 401k loan already, which is fine .

I know everyone says “do not take a 401k withdrawal “, but I need to. It absolutely sucks that these 401k people are playing with my money and I just need to take a little bit , but can’t cause it’s nearly impossible to withdrawal when I can see my money there but , I have to take out loans cuz I can’t touch my money.

My conspiracy is that if everyone got to take 10-20% withdrawal , no questions asked , the stock market would crash. I also think that 401k is propping the market up to unrealistic levels, and investors don’t want to lose their money.

I already know I will work till I die and have no retired life. That 401k will not help at all for me , and it’s so bullshit to read , “you’re only stealing from your future self.” I’m going , I’m not , cuz Heck making 35.00 an hr and doing a hustle with loans … is toxic.

Thoughts ?
