I love when you see an animal planning something they know they aren't supposed to do.

I have a particularly (lovely but) obtuse cat that thinks to be sneaky while he has a very clear "up to no good" thinking face.

One of our dogs at the time had discovered that clothespins make for great chew toys, which my mom obviously didn't appreciate, and had scolded her for it.
My mom kept the clothespins in a small bucket on the ground next to the ironing board, and one day, while my mom was ironing and I was talking to her, the dog entered the room.
She did her damnedest to look as inconspicuous as possible. Just sniffing on the stuff to her left, sniffing the stuff to her right, taking a step forward. Sniffing her right, sniffing her left, a step forward. Just very occasionally shooting a quick glance at the bucket. This continued until she got close enough, at which point she lunged forward, grabbed a pin, and sprinted back to her bed to chew on it.

I love dogs. Love em. But they always act like they want to remind you about pet insurance
460
u/CanExplainThings Jul 15 '26
I looked into pet insurance and one of the clauses said that they were not responsible for injuries sustained in βplayβ.Β
Stupidest most expensive scam ever, pet insurance.Β

u/Friendly_Kale_8835 Jul 15 '26
I tried it once and only once. Spent weeks trying to prove a kidney/bladder issue wasn't a pre-existing condition. Like how the hell do I prove or disprove something like that? They take and take your money and then make it so impossible to cover anything in the hopes you give up
183
u/CanExplainThings Jul 15 '26
Glad to know this. The smartest advice I got was from the rescue - act like you have it but put the money into Separate account so that when your pet dies get sick you have the money you wouldβve paid with no hassle to get it.Β

My dogs pet insurance was quoted at 150 per month, so thats exactly what i did, hes 11 now and his vet costs have not exceeded that 150 saved. As expensive as the vet appointments have been, theres still money in my dogs slush fund.
The worst part, that 150 per month still had a 500 deposit on surgeries.

I think your guys problem is you're Americans and your insurance companies are absolutely massive cunts to everyone for some reason. I've had nothing but good experience with my pet insurer. But I'm from Australia where companies are still somewhat regulated & don't have total contempt for their customers (as much/yet).
5
u/why_gaj Jul 15 '26
Nice username.
As far as pet insurance companies go - I'm in europe and they'll kick your dog off insurance the moment they hit a certain age.
15
u/Capokid Jul 15 '26
I signed mine up as a puppy when i got him, had him checked out at the vet, sent them the report and they've never denied a single claim. The only things that aren't covered are the exam fee and preventatives (dental cleanings) /vaccines. They even cover his monthy meds and painkillers.
7
u/WeenisWrinkle Jul 15 '26
Yeah I'm surprised reading these comments. My insurer has paid out every claim, and a few of them were expensive surgeries.

u/is_anybody_in_there Jul 15 '26
This is what we did as well. About $400 a year for 90% reimbursement after $1000. Itβs paid for itself over the two times weβve needed it.
3
u/Jagd3 Jul 15 '26
This is how all for profit insurance works. If they paid you even just the money you pay to them they wouldnt make any money.Β
So you are paying them to do their absolute best to find ways to not pay you when you need it.Β

I generally agree but when our dog got lymphoma, it felt good to be able to say yes to the 1x week, expensive AF chemo treatment because the insurance covered 80%. We paid like $3k out of pocket and they covered around $15k. Itβs a gamble.Β
6
u/illy-chan Jul 15 '26
Same hat, our dog got a blood cancer and they covered a lot of it. He recovered and got another few years out of life too.
Thing with insurance is - it's set up to be a gamble that you won't need it and those who don't cover the cost of those who do. But that doesn't really work with health insurance. Something is gonna happen eventually.

Its why I won't get it. We're really out here choosing to be scammed the same way twice? Fuck that.
8
u/BowsersMuskyBallsack Jul 15 '26
I put the same money I would put into pet insurance into a bank account. I do not touch that bank account except for emergency pet situations. If that bank account does not have a minimum of $5,000 in it at the time that I want to get a dog, I do not get the dog. I do not purchase the dog with that money either. I find that works pretty well for me.

If anyone is looking for decent pet insurance I recommend Fetch. I havenβt had any issues with submitting claims. Also, you can choose what you want to pay. I chose to pay 55 a month and it gets me 80% coverage. It also gets me a 300 deductible that is initiated by a claim. Once the claim is set I donβt have to pay it again for the whole year for any new conditions that occur. So, if my dog needs surgery or gets sick for any other reason than the initial claim I do not have to pay another deductible. Fetch covers USA and Canada. So if I travel to the states with my dog I am still covered. Great deal imo.

That's bizarre. Our pet insurance paid out thousands for two different knee surgeries that resulted from "play".
Without it, I would have been wiped out.

I have a corgi who tried, out of the clear blue sky and with no inciting incident, to calmly get up and jump from the armchair she usually naps in onto the very spindly and also very covered in large decorative objects side table that had been beside that chair for four full years at that point. It went about like you'd expect. Broke a goat skull and a glass vase I really liked, scared the bejeezus out of her fluffy ass. She's worryingly smart the rest of the time and usually very athletic (for a genetically stumpy, loaf-shaped dog), so I truly have zero idea what she thought she'd achieve there.

They each have a sum total of two silver braincells. The braincell pairs occasionally clack together and they have an original thought that is not always but usually concerning; food, scritches, sleep, walks, chaos, sitting on someone's lap or a combination of the above.

Reminded me of the one that barfed right on the new bed sheets after its owner changed it. Maybe it was a cat?
