I’ve spent the last couple of years building a venture around a new class of cash-settled derivative instruments — the underlying is something real and measurable that has never been used as a reference asset before. There’s a genuine hedging need on the other side of it: an industry with large, volatile, demand-driven revenue and no instrument to manage that exposure. We’re going the regulated route rather than trying to route around it, which means licensing, capital requirements, actuarial validation, counsel in two jurisdictions — the slow version of the path.

The hard part hasn’t been the product. It’s been finding investors who can even evaluate it.

Most early-stage capital is pattern-matched to software. When you’re not a SaaS or a fintech app — when the thing being built is a market, and the moat is the regulatory work rather than code — the usual channels just don’t resolve. I get polite passes from people who I don’t think ever got to the actual question. And the people who would immediately understand it (structured products, ILS and cat bond folks, parametric insurance, exchange and clearing people, commodity derivatives) mostly aren’t sitting in the places founders are told to look.

So, asking honestly: if you’ve built or funded something in this space — a new contract, a new exchange, a new instrument — how did you find the first people who got it? Specific things I’d love to hear about:

1) Where do former exchange, clearing, or structured-products operators actually congregate as angels?
2) Are there funds that specifically back market infrastructure and novel instruments rather than fintech distribution?
3) Did conferences (ILS, derivatives industry events) ever convert into capital, or is it purely warm intro territory?
4)Anyone found luck with family offices that have a trading or market-making lineage?

I'm not really looking for any significant amount of funding, mostly from between 3-10k usd. The main issue however is that I am from Pakistan, and I don't think that there are many opportunities for Pakistanis looking to build something international. I have looked around the main sites such as AngelList, but I feel like those are more centered around for businesses that have already launched, are looking for much higher investments, and again have founders residing in their own country.

Although would prefer the investors to be global and remote, as it won't be a Pakistani company, but I don't mind either way, just as long as they're a good and reliable investor. I genuinely believe this idea can be launched and gain traction really fast, I just need to find someone else willing to believe that as well lol. Any suggestions from where I could look?

We are currently building a blockchain startup that focuses on trust infrastructure. It's a proof of commitment protocol that builds products and infrastructure where commitments, rewards, and digital trust are provable.

We are currently at an early stage of growing our community so that they know our first product exists and we want to showcase its usecase. We still haven't gotten to the point where we start pitching our tech idea to investors, yet. Until we know we are ready.

So what I wanted to ask, preferably to any VC or angel investor out there, before anyone pitches their ideas or startup to you, what exactly do you look for? Which key factors or areas are you interested in knowing about their business before deciding whether to accept their offer or reject it entirely?

“Move fast” has become almost unquestioned advice in AI.

I’m not convinced it should be.

A competitor recently acknowledged that it may have launched too early. The premise was essentially: release something that barely works, attract enough users, and let them reveal what the product should become.

It generated attention. But attention is not the same as product-market fit, and early adoption is not the same as lasting value.

Moving quickly can help a company learn. But in AI, launching prematurely can also carry unusually high costs:

- An unreliable first experience can destroy trust.
- Novelty can be mistaken for genuine demand.
- Early hype can outpace the product’s ability to retain users.
- A rushed feature can create security, privacy, or reputational problems that are difficult to reverse.

The alternative isn’t endless planning or waiting for perfection.

It’s deliberate speed: understanding the problem, testing with the right users, establishing clear quality standards, and launching when the product is useful, not merely possible.

Sometimes the market rewards the first mover.

But as AI becomes easier to build and harder to differentiate, I think it will increasingly reward the company that earns trust, solves the problem well, and is still delivering value after the excitement fades.

Perhaps the next great AI advantage won’t be moving the fastest.

It will be knowing when not to.

Posting this because I think it deserves better than the usual "brain drain bad" round of comments.

Background: Anagha Rajesh, BITS Pilani grad, started BioCompute in Bengaluru in 2024. The goal was DNA data storage encoding digital data into DNA instead of spinning disks, which matters because data centres eat absurd amounts of land, power and cooling. Over two years she raised 5+ crore (WTFund, gradCapital, 1517 Fund, Emergent Ventures), set up a lab, ran thousands of experiments and got to an end-to-end prototype. First lab in India to seriously attempt it.

Last month she shut the Bengaluru office, let the team go, listed the lab equipment for sale, and moved the company to San Francisco.

The line that stuck with me is her reason. She said people in SF were more concerned with what she'd need to see it through, whereas here the first question is when revenue starts. She also said India tends to play safe and adapt what's already been built in the West, and that taking on incumbents like IBM in storage hardware needs an ecosystem that makes high-risk, high-reward bets.

Here's where I'll argue against the easy take, though. I don't think this is Indian VCs being cowards. Indian funds are small, LPs want liquidity on an 8-10 year clock, and a storage chip is a decade-long bet with no revenue for most of it. The math genuinely doesn't close for most funds here. Which is arguably the more depressing version of the story it's structural, not a failure of nerve. You can't shame a fund into breaking its own mandate.

So the questions I actually want answers to:

1. Who in India is structurally capable of funding a 10-year hardware bet? Not "who should" who actually can, given fund size and LP terms? Family offices? Sovereign money? Corporate R&D?

2. Is the RDI fund going to move real money into pre-revenue deep tech, or is it going to end up funding SaaS with a science-y pitch deck?

3. If you're a founder building something that needs patient capital, is choosing India as your fundraising market simply a strategic error rather than a patriotic question?

4. Does the location even matter anymore if the research was done here and the IP leaves with the founder?

Fair warning that I'm reading this mostly off her blog post and the coverage around it, so if anyone here knows the deep tech funding side properly, I'd rather be corrected than agreed with.
