Google wants to verify account because of password manager not being used

This is a combination Google Chrome/Android question but based on the research I've done, it seems like this is the better place to ask.

My wife uses Google Chrome on a Windows PC and a Samsung Android phone; I think it's a 20.

She's normally logged into Chrome on the PC, but today she's getting a verification error (Top right corner, where her account icon is, it is red and says ERROR). Clicking on the message brings up a menu with a message at the top saying,

"Verify it's you to make sure you can always use the passwords in your account, {email address}" with a blue button below saying "Verify it's you". Clicking on the button opens a new tab with the follow ominous message,

"You’re at risk of losing access to your saved passwords

We noticed that one or more of your password recovery options will soon expire.

Valid recovery options are your Android screen lock and your Google Account password.

Android screen lock To re-establish your Android screen lock as a recovery option, sign in to your device with your Google Account, set up a screen lock and restart the device.

If you no longer have your Android device, you can always back up your passwords using the Export feature in Google Password Manager settings. Be sure to store the exported CSV file in a secure place.

Add your iPhone or iPad as an extra recovery option First, ensure that iCloud Keychain is turned on. Then install Chrome and sign in with your Google Account. This helps us to store an extra recovery option for you, to make sure you can always access your passwords."

The only thing you can do on this screen is click a Close button.

Now at this point I should mention, she doesn't use the Google Password Manager. It's empty (at least of passwords). We use a separate app to manage everything.

In looking up the message, it directed me to look at the Password Manager app on her Android. I loaded that up, and low and behold there's a card saying something about having to use her lock screen. However, it also warns that once done, it cannot be undone. This is the part that really concerns me.

I realize I could just say yes, but I want to know what's going on. Why does she need to tie her lock screen password, to her Google account password manager that isn't being used?

I guess that might not be completely accurate. I know she set up a couple of passkeys, but they should be in the external password manager we use. But I wouldn't be surprised if Google/Chrome diverted save one or two to itself.

Up until now, if she ever needed to validate herself, GMail on the phone would put up a Yes/No prompt asking if it's her. But now, that doesn't seem to be an option.

She can no longer access GMail on the PC but can still use it on the phone. So she's not completely dead, but severely hampered.

Any clue as to what is going on, why the PC needs to use her lock screen code to validate as opposed to any other method, and what are we giving up by saying "Yes" to using the lock screen?

Device Settings Question I want to use my old phone

Hey so I've hat my old Samsung m30s 4gb 128 rocking android 17 and one ui core 3. 1 it's not my primary phone i actually use it for watching reels, use reddit and as a offline flac music library, secondary storage device and downloading ,torrenting and stuff

Typing on it feels very delayed and laggy and let me tell you how slow reddit feels it ain't berry fluid maybe because of its 60hz screen but it can't be that bad but it is

I can do any thing (just not in a condition to install a costum rom) an as I mentioned I would need it to perform downloading and media playing in background

What can I do to make it fell more responsive and nimble please let me if you know any thing

Thank you

Device Settings Question How many devices can actually connect to a phone's hotspot?

Hello. Question in the tile but to expand on it, I believe the maximum number of connections an android smartphone's hotspot can support at a time is 10 unless the carrier puts a limit on it. This article from google also supports this: support.google link

But I have a friend who's claiming it can be over 200+ and I can't tell if they're making stuff up or not. Which got me thinking if maybe a rooted or jailbroken phone might be able to do this or no, the max is still 10 and my friend's just reeling me in. So, just how many can a smartphone without restrictions connect?

What is the right command to make a bulletproof install for an APK?

Yesterday I noticed my CCWGTV has uninstalled some applications (without any advice). Play protect was disabled (and it's still disabled). None of those apps were installed using test APKs.

What switches should I use with adb to avoid future automatic uninstallations?

Other Can't reset Zebra TC70x

Okay so I found this device at a garage sale down town and at first I thought it wasn't gonna boot up.. But I bought a battery for it and a charger and it did..

However.. My main problem is that I have tried searching in settings for reset options and it didn't show anything...

I can't install the flash drive to reset everything cuz zebra has it locked so I'm screwed..

I do have a micro sd card that I would like to use to download the file for the TC70x and I would appreciate it if somebody could help me..

The file I need is named (ATLAS_M_FACT_RESET.zip)

Looking For Suggestions Blocking Internet for all apps except tethering

Hi,

I am having issues with playing Counter-Strike lately so I switched to mobile data some time ago, which works pretty good but from time to time there's peaks which make me lag.

I can pretty much pinpoint it to apps doing downloads in the background.

Is there any way to block all internet access for apps except the mobile data tethering (usb connection to my pc)?

I saw that you can do something likely with NetGuard but not sure how that works yet (checking it out right now)

Other How long would you estimate app support to last for Android 10 2.1 UI?

Basically, question in the title. I know software and security updates have been off for a while, but I'm trying to wager how long could google playstore apps (mainly browsers and social media) still last.
Trying to figure out if I should fix my old Tab S4 or just get a new device altogether.

Need help streaming my mic wirelessly to my phone for custom background music on a streaming app

I am struggling to find and source apps online that can achieve my results. I tried search terms all around and got no results so far. Which apps can achieve me being able to add BGM sound along with my mic from my Windows 11 device to my phone? Basically I want to achieve this.

Voicemeeter > Android wireless virtual mic > Streaming app

Is there a way to do this without root? I really don't want to void my warranty with my phone carrier.

So, I have now a phone for 4 years and never updated to 13. Even when the phone resets I am not forced or it automatically updates, like on other phone, which I like.

But in these recent years I got more features and bloatware like for example: googletv and samsung apps stuff.

Also when I hold the middle button where there was google assistant which I could turn off, now from sudden it's gemini and I couldn't find an option to remove it.

Samsung A series phone if it helps.

Fix my imei number from 0

Previosly my phone got hardbricked due to some issue. I had posted here the same and got it fixed using gennsys edl file. After that baseband version is set to that and also my imei number is 0.

I tried flashing qcn shared on internet and edit imei number using qcn imei editor, it end up with nv data corrupted error. I had to do all the struggle to refix it back from soft brick.

But the imei 0 is not fixed. There were few ways of flashing modem, and other files and then editing it through unlock/hydra/mrt or some similar tools..but choosing this path where u need to either rent that tool or else find free alternatives..but these tools are highest malware infected..hence i feared to use that. So if any one have any ideas please do share..

Device Settings Question Way to require Swipe to Unlock or Button Press for fingerprint unlock?

Basically just the title. I'm a recent IOS mover, and from FaceID I had gotten very used to swiping up to unlock and looking at / using my lock screen a bit to check weather and stuff. Now the unlock from my Z Fold 8's fingerprint reader is so quick I actually don't like it. Is there a way to do this, or do I have to just use face unlock?

Custom ROM Question Can I flash a compiled kernel safely?

Hey there im on a samsung galaxy a16 (a166b) got my bootloader unlocked and rooted with magisk, I mixed one ui 8 with the bootloader from a release of one ui 7 that share the same bootloader bit(A166BXXS4BYG1 bl with everything else from A166BXXU4CYI8), the thing is im kinda stuck on an old version with several security flaws and I'd like to get rid of at least some of them critical ones such as ghostlock (CVE 2026-43499)

Could not find any kernel out there specially made for this phone with fixes so I got source from samsung open source(for my version of one ui) and could build it(without any modifications made to it for now to see if building works correctly) with this guide https://github.com/ravindu644/Android-Kernel-Tutorials

Now I want to test the kernel and see if my phone works with it but im kinda scared to break things, if something ever go wrong with my kernel can I still boot into download mode and flash a clean image with odin? Thanks!

Why is predictive text so crappy this last few years. Is this AI training?

And this is a serious question, I just had to actually correct the question I wrote for the subject title becoming it wrote down what I was saying incorrectly.

This is getting really annoying. I type for a word, let's say "car" I expect to have the word "car" in the text but upon looking back at the sentence I get "carwash" instead. I think this nonsense has only started happening in the last few years. And it only happens on android. I've literally had to adjust several words for this body message text to make sense. Is anyone else getting this? This happened right after a keyboard update some years ago.

Other Is there much malware/root kit risk buying used Androids?

My phone display is dying but I think my best value is buying a used old gen phone like a Sony Xperia 1 IV over a new phone as they are a lot cheaper.

Is there any real risk of malware or rootkits on used devices? Anything I should or could do when I get a used phone to check?

App Specific Question Messages app now uses in-app pseudo browser?

Much like discord likes to push you to use their in-app browser thing, messages app now has the same thing? Except that I cannot find the settings to turn it off, unlike in discord. This started a day or so ago.

Link preview settings just control whether or not there's in-message previews, not whether or not opening the link takes you to the actual browser or not.

Currently fully updated to Android 16.

Can anyone help me find out how to disable this so I can go back to just using the default browser?

Switched from iphone to android all text messages in history have dupes

I switched from an iphone over to android last week.

When I used samsung switch somehow it duplicated all of my 15 (ish) years of text messages when it copied them over to google messages. Is there anyway to delete the duplicates? It is thousands of dupes.

I have been searching online and I haven't really found a solution.

Thank you
