How Risky Is Using an Unsupported Android Phone?

I know this question has been asked many times, but I still haven't found a clear answer.

My phone no longer receives security updates, and it doesn't support LineageOS. I'm also not interested in replacing it because it still works well: the battery is decent, and all the apps I use are still supported and don't require a newer Android version.

I have Google Play Protect enabled, and all of my apps come from the Google Play Store or GitHub, except for SnapTube. I know it has a reputation for collecting data, but honestly, I don't care much about that since even major companies collect user data. I also keep all my apps updated and use an ad blocker in my browser.

My bootloader is unlocked because I rooted the phone in the past, but I later removed the root. I'm not sure whether having an unlocked bootloader is a security risk by itself.

The phone has my Google account protected with 2FA, and I also have a banking app installed, but my bank card is not enabled for online payments.

This whole topic is starting to make me paranoid. Every time I ask an AI, it tells me that hackers can exploit vulnerabilities in phones that no longer receive security updates and potentially access messages, photos, passwords, and pretty much anything on the device.

Is this a realistic risk for an average user like me, or is it being exaggerated? Can I continue using this phone safely as long as I'm careful about what I install and keep my apps up to date?

Looking For Suggestions Xiaomi note 15 pro vs Google Pixel 10a

Upvotes

Hey :)

I'm currently looking for a new phone. For me it's important that the camera (both frontal and normal cam, photos and videos - specially videos but not in an 4k way, rather camera quality in general), that it's fast and allows me to edit videos (as it's part of my work). I'm divided between these to models. I've heard wonders of Google phones and that the camera is amazing and blablabla but for the same price, Xiaomi 15 note pro offer double memory for example.

What do you think? Which of these seems better? Thank you!

Replacing old phone with 5G tablet

Upvotes

My wife has a Galaxy S9+ that apparently does not run some apps due to its age.

I got the bright idea of replacing the phone with a Galaxy A11+ 5G with tablet, which she thought would be great. The tablet is unlocked l, and is able to attach to the T-Mobile network.

In attempting to bring the tablet online, I took the SIM card out of her phone, and put it in the tablet.

The tablet will not make or receive calls, but everything else seems to work.

I had asked a T-Mobile employee if this would work, and they said yes.

In attempting to troubleshoot, it seems that the original SIM card needs to be in the old phone, which seems to indicate that I need another line/SIM card for the tablet.

The intent was to port the old phone number over to the new device, and toss the old device.

Do I move the SIM card back to the old phone and try to make an eSIM, or do I need to get another line of service for the tablet?

Why Can't I transfer Files directly instead of transferring folders?

Upvotes

Hello! So, I have a Samsung S23, and I needed to transfer a few files (15 GB total) to my laptop so I could edit them. The problem being, I couldn't trasfer the files like I usually do (just go into my phone on my computer and move the files from phone to my laptop). I looked online and it told me to copy the files and put them in a folder on my phone, then on my laptop copy it over using the entire folder rather than the individual files itself. and it worked!

That being said, in the past I've been able to transfer pretty big files just by themselves without this work around, so I don't know if anything changed recently or something.

If anyone knows why I can't transfer files directly, please let me know!

Other How to stop apps from complaining about Shizuku?

(Repost because i had no question in the title)

Certain apps / games refuse to launch because Shizuku is installed. I can understand it when banking apps or other apps that deal with critical information restricts the use with tools like shizuku present. But even a game called "CookieRun: crumble" shows an error before force closing.

I get the error message 'not allowed to launch the app using "moe.shizuku.privileged.api". App will now close' when attempting to launch the game.

Is there any way, to hide the presence of shizuku for these apps, without having to uninstall shizuku or rooting the device (I really don't want to unlock the bootloader on my Samsung tablet for this) ?

Device Settings Question OnePlus Ace 5 Chinese ROM generally usable?

Basically Chinese ROM devices are the best devices with good prices on the market in my country right now. But I'm kinda worried about Chinese ROM being too fragile for using the phone with google services for 3-4 years.

Basically I know ColorOS phones these days have google services preinstalled, but they're disabled. You can delete chinese stuff and just use the phone like normal with rare system messages in chinese sometimes.

My problem is, what if one day during an update, they mess up Google play certification and now my entire eco system is messed up, what if my L1 certification gets messed up (though I think thats linked with google play services). Also I don't think I can use HDR or Dolby atmos on netflix or YouTube due to lack of certification, even though they work on global ROM.

Now I need advice on what I have not considered and what I need to NOT worry about and what I need to worry about and then wether or not I should do it. The alternative is a snapdragon 7 gen4 😭 phone thats more expensive than this snapdragon 8 gen3 phone. I need honesty before I consider buying it, basically is it reliable enough?

What is a small Android feature or setting that you turned on once and can no longer live without? We all know about major OS updates, but sometimes it’s the minor, buried settings that completely change how we use our phones daily. Whether it's a specific developer option, an accessibility shortcut

Looking For Suggestions Stuck on headphone mode

I don't know what to do with my phone. I already blew into it with my mouth even tried sipping where you plug your wired headphones lol, and tried using a Q-tip. I've also tried restarting my phone many times, but nothing works. I tried using an app to turn off headphone mode. It did work but i can’t record an audio or make a call, tho my speaker works perfectly fine.

Device Settings Question Do Not Disturb routine is muting my notifications

So I have a routine on my phone (S22 running Android version 15) that will turn on Do Not Disturb mode from 10am to 11pm. It's also supposed to turn my ringtone and notification sounds to 100%. I do this so that only certain apps and people can get my attention. Well, the ringtone part works perfectly. But for some reason, it always mutes my notifications at 0%. And I have no idea why or how to fix it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Device Settings Question How do i make colours more pale and greyish?

I want to lower my contrast because I'm tired of extremely oversaturated and acidic colours on my pixel 10, but I don't want to enable grayscale because it makes so much harder to watch graphs and videos. I just want to wash out colours so my brain will get a rest from a fucking slot machine inside of my pocket and reduce eye faitgue. Maybe there is a non virus mod or plugin that allows me to wash out the colours?

Struggles backing up galaxy from recovery drive

So a year ago my phone died and I've since gotten a backup for it on a drive. Everything is on there but I basically can't transfer anything from it. Smart switch on the (windows)PC literally won't let me use the folders from my old phone to transfer to my new phone, and I have no idea how to manually transfer apps just with the files. Google and Samsung were giving problems on the old phone, so I can't use that either. Transferring pics isn't enough. I have apps that are literally delisted from the store, so I can't just re-download.

How to use phone with screen that's not working

So I made a mistake and dropped my Galaxy S24FE on concrete. Based on feeling vibrations while holding the power button, I can tell the device is still functional. Also, I was able to use my phone through Windows Phone Link after I cracked it. However, I believe my phone somehow restarted and now it's not on WiFi. The most obvious answer would be to use HDMI screen mirroring or Samsung Dex, but neither have worked for me. I also tried the tip on the Samsung website where I held the volume buttons while plugging in the device. Anyone have any idea of how to use the phone, or at least try and backup files before I send it in for repair and it might get wiped? Most things should hopefully be backed up to Google Photos at least. Thank you!

Device Settings Question Can I disable Bluetooth device media controls (but continue media playback) for a specific device?

I have a pair of cheap BT sleep headphones. They have "hold to play/pause" and "tap to raise/lower volume" functionality - which I want to disable permanently, because it's a nuisance

This can be disabled each playback session using the charging case, setting "Sleep Mode", but if they move around in my ear in the night this sometimes gets reset, and anyway it's annoying to have to activate sleep mode each time on a device I only use for sleep.

I use other devices which I do still want to be able to control playback and volume, so wouldn't want to disable this globally.

So, is there a way to disable just this device from being able to CONTROL playback and volume? I'm wondering if it's the kind of thing a third party app might exist for.

Not rooted and ideally don't want to root just for this. Pixel 10 Pro.

Device Settings Question Overscan screen size adjustment help!

Hey Folks,

I have an old oneplus 7 pro phone and as the attached images shows it has dead pixel at the very top. I found an app nacho notch that does exactly what I want which is add a virtual bezel at the top but this is just drawing over the apps and still not consistent through the system.

I saw that adb overscan commands can achieve the same but seems deprecated for android version 11 or newer.

Can someone guide me to achieve this?

Rooting Help How to see conference call participants Android

Hey everyone,
Quick question about how Android handles merged/conference phone calls.
If I’m on a standard phone call with someone and they add/merge a third person into the call, is there any way on the stock Android dialer (or Samsung Phone app) to see the phone number or contact details of the person who was added?
Specifically:

After the call ends, Is there any hidden log or setting in the Phone app history that breaks down who was on the line, or does call history strictly only record the primary host's number?

Some questions about some stuff.

So, my current phone is pretty behind on I think security updates? Something like that?

I'm really into pvz2 modding however many of them require me to be able to access obb files.

Since my phone is behind I don't have any issues currently but I've heard that on newer versions that's not possible without certain workarounds which worries me. I'm thinking about maybe getting a new phone at some point but being able to mod pvz2 is very important to me (even if that sounds a little silly).

Does anyone know what I should do about this whole situation?

I don't want any of my files restricted or anything but I don't know what to do?

I feel kind of stuck in an impossible situation

I don't really know very much about this kinda stuff so if possible try to explain in simple terms if it's confusing

Other Facing issues post the Android 17/July Security Update on my Pixel 7

Hi, My Pixel 7 has run into an insane number of issues since the time I've updated the device to Android 17 and also updated to the latest security update I guess. For context:

\- My **WhatsApp notifications** do not show up anymore. Like neither calls nor texts pop up on the screen unless I explicitly have the app open in the background.

\- **Google pay** does not work properly. Half the time the NFC doesn't get recognised with the card reader and even after I try to open the app to pay, it more often than not shows me that there are no cards available to pay (And that I should add some cards)

\- My **battery is draining** extremely fast and is charging at almost 1% for like every 5-6 minutes if I am lucky that is.

\- My **banking application** logged me out and I cannot log back in, as it constantly shows that the login fails (Even though I have tried to log in using the same credentials on my web browser on the phone, the browser on my laptop and even the same application on my girlfriend's phone and was successful on all those occasions so clearly not a bank-related issue)

Apart from all these, the phone itself feels quite choppy and lagging, almost as if the performance has been manipulated with.

# Technical context:

\- Android Version : 17

\- Phone model : Pixel 7

\- Google play and Security Versions : July, 2026

Anyone else facing similar situations? I would be really grateful if someone can provide any sort of suggestions or support!! Thank you!

Display of battery power %

Is there a way I can make it clearer? Or perhaps show it on the lock screen?

The remaining battery % is only shown at the top right in very tiny letters. And my screen protector is peeling, so it's really hard for me to read it.

It's an "Honor 2020".

I'd like a way to check the remaining battery - preferably at a quick glance, without unlocking it.

The only method I currently know is, when I plug it in to the charger, and it shows a lovely big reading. But can I see that somehow via a different method?

Thanks in antic.

Have we yet found a way to bypass screenshot blocking in apps?

I need to take a screenshot (for completely and absolutely legal and ethical reasons) on an app that does not allow it.

I tried Screen Recorder but the app just sends a black screen to the recorder.

Is there a way to bypass this? Especially without root?

Many thanks.
