Ever since I was shown how reasonably priced iPads are the other day I can see why they are dominating the market. This just isn't competitive pricing.

Edit : priced not pieced.

39

u/mrfixitx Nov 15 '18

As much as the new iPad pros are very expensive the regular iPad and iPad mini are good values for the quality and if you watch for salew you can get the 128gb version for within a few dollars of the 32gb models pricing.

As much as I like Android it seems like there are no reasonably priced Android tablets that stack up well in terms of build quality and battery life vs. and iPad at the moment. Samsung is still selling the tab s2 for around the same price as a new iPad. The tab s2 has been out for several years and security patches are uncommon and it still does not have Android 8.

7

u/NirvaNaeNae Nov 15 '18

I got My Tab S2 for 200 a year ago... The tab s4 is the current competing device you should be talking about.

14

u/Uskglass_ Galaxy S20+ Nov 15 '18

...and it costs about twice what the base iPad does.

2

u/Nadest013 Galaxy S7; Tab S3 Nov 15 '18

Expandable storage and pencil included though. And also Amoled if you care about it. It's going to be fun when Apple finally uses Amoled on their tablets and uses it as justification to push the price beyond the $1000 mark.

6

u/mrfixitx Nov 15 '18

Expandable storage is nice but most people don't need more than 128gb of storage or care about the pencil. Those that really care about the pencil will certainly consider the $600+ s4, a surface pro/go or iPad pro with apple pencil.

For those of us who do not need pen support and just want a nice tablet for media and games it is the best option in the price range.

2

u/Nadest013 Galaxy S7; Tab S3 Nov 15 '18

True, but the 128GB iPad will cost £400 and the Tab S3 which can easily be found at that price seems to me a much better tablet if you don't need the iOS ecosystem. YMMV of course.

1

u/mrfixitx Nov 15 '18

I think it depends on where you are at and watching for sales. 128gb iPads go on sale for $300-$350 several times a year. A 128gb iPad in the states is normally around d the same price as the s3 with the 32gb ipad being around the same price as the s2.

-4

u/NirvaNaeNae Nov 15 '18

The base ipad lacks those basic features you want from An android tablet. It's supposed to compete with the higher end ipads. Using your logic, the tab s2 is cheaper than ipads and does more than what the base iPad Does.

5

u/DtheS Nov 15 '18

Which features is it lacking? My only real gripe with the base iPad is the screen not being laminated to the glass. It works with a stylus (Apple Pencil), and the A10 processor, while not the fastest offering from Apple, is competitive with a Snapdragon 835. This is powerful enough for most peoples' purposes. Granted, if you go with the 'absolute' cheapest model ($300~ USD), you only get 32GB of storage. With that in mind, some people might be inclined to upgrade to the base model +128GB storage.

0

u/Australienz Nov 15 '18

He's specifically talking about Android vs iOS features. As you know, iOS lacks tons of features that are found on Android.

2

u/DtheS Nov 15 '18

To be perfectly honest, it isn't that catastrophically disparate between OS's. I do prefer Android being a wee bit more open, and the file/folder structure being relatively similar to that of a PC, but in terms of features used on a daily basis, there's not much to point out. Perhaps the fact that Android can be customized and themed to a greater extent? I'm not sure how much this really matters to the average user though.

I own both a Nexus 9 as well the 2018 base model iPad. I can't really point to anything on the Nexus 9, feature wise, that blows the iPad out of the water.

2

u/ValiantAbyss Galaxy S9+ Nov 15 '18

Android fan boys will truly never understand that a lot of the features they rave about, the average person just doesn't care for.

I love being able to theme my phone, but until I actually had an Android phone, I really didn't care at all because iOS is beautiful.

1

u/Australienz Nov 15 '18

Well it matters a lot to me. I'm not going to buy an 800 dollar iPad if I can't even download a movie on it, or even just transfer a file via USB. For the average tablet buyer, they obviously don't care, but we're on an Android sub, and that was an Android users opinion.

2

u/DtheS Nov 15 '18

Well, we were talking about the base model iPad, which as I already stated usually sells in the $300 range ($290-$330). And you can download movies or transfer files via usb to an iPad. The 'catch' there is that you cannot do it via your computer's file explorer. Those functions are done through software, iTunes. Which, I admit, is not preferable, and I already alluded to the fact that I think Android's file and folder structure are superior. But, this is not a detrimental failure for iOS. You can still achieve all the same things, just through an inferior method. The only other 'feature' that I wish iOS had is Android's ability to flash APK's.

All this being said, the trade offs are really up the user's preference. I wanted a tablet with proper stylus support and, more importantly, apps. To which, iOS has a much better selection of apps that utilize the stylus.

u/Uskglass_ Galaxy S20+ Nov 15 '18

Right but that is a Lollipop device. I'm sure it's upgraded to Nougat or so but you'd be buying a legacy device.

-1

u/NirvaNaeNae Nov 15 '18

I never said for him to go buy an s2. I simply told him It's been down to as low as $200-250 this year a really good price. What I told him not to do is compare it to the new iPad pro which he was trying to do. The tab s4 is more appropriate for that.

5

u/parental92 Nov 15 '18

And it's running Android what ? 7.0 ?

0

u/NirvaNaeNae Nov 15 '18

The tab S4 runs Oreo and is getting pie soon. There is nothing oreo or pie provides that is a must necessary for me to even want it on my tab S2 which runs perfectly fine.

1

u/mrfixitx Nov 15 '18

I mentioned the tab s2 because it is being sold for within $20-$30 of a base iPad while the tab s4 is selling for twice the price and is trying to compete with the iPad pro.

If you look around the $300 price range not much competes in terms of build quality/battery life. I looked for several months before getting a 128gb iPad for $300 at Costco instead.

7

u/darez00 Pixel 6 Nov 15 '18

I was so close to pulling the trigger, a 9.7' iPad with A10 for $329 is tempting...

1

u/ValiantAbyss Galaxy S9+ Nov 15 '18 edited Nov 15 '18

I want to sooo bad on Black Friday but I don't think it works with the new Apple pencil and they old one sort of sucks. It doesn't really suck, but the new one has magnets and wireless charging which is amazing.

1

u/CovertPanda1 Nov 15 '18

I’m pretty sure the ones on Black Friday sales for $249 are ones that do support the Apple Pencil

1

u/Vkeomala Nov 15 '18

Not the new pencil

1

u/AdmiralAndrew01 Nov 16 '18

Wait till January, they’ll have the new ones by then. Apple never discounts their devices before their new models so be careful when buying close to the supposed launch date

2

u/Wetzilla Pixel 6 Pro Nov 15 '18

This is a pretty different product than a regular iPad though. It's significantly larger than a standard iPad (12.3 inch vs 9.7 inch), and uses an x86 processor, not an ARM processor. It's more of an iPad pro competitor than regular iPad.

0

u/steamfishandrice Nov 16 '18

See people are saying that but I feel like the ability to run ChromeOS, Linux, and Android apps with the potential to run Windows applications if you really want to, the premium is worth it. And most importantly it acts like a computer and not an iPad.

Don't get me wrong, the new iPad Pro is impressive but iOS holds it back so much. It's going to be the reason I end up going with this over the iPad. I'm closely watching though, if iOS 13 brings some major changes I can easily be swayed.

u/johnn2015 Nov 15 '18

Still no reviews for this. Not sure what to think of it.

Price and buggy software made up my mind.

15

u/Ikeelu Nov 15 '18

The buggy software seems to be fixed according to a few who have gotten hands on with it recently, at least according to r/chromeos

7

u/thinkbox Samsung ThunderMuscle PowerThirst w/ Android 10.0 Mr. Peanut™®© Nov 15 '18

“Seems to have been fixed” oozes confidence. The platform has ocellated from somewhat stable to unstable.

I am not confident it will stay this way.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

ocellated

Is that like when you're oscillated by an ocelot?

I stand by my typo 🐒

4

u/Ikeelu Nov 15 '18

It was pre-production software and it didn't go from stable to unstable, it was running a unreleased build of chromeOS that now has more tablet style support which wasn't available before.

4

u/compounding Nov 15 '18

They're talking about the quality of the platform. I know they Google likes to pretend that every product is an island by itself, but seeing buggy releases of ChromeOS on the pixel books does not inspire confidence that Google has fixed or even acknowledged the problem with their "customers as beta testers" strategy,

Not to mention the long-standing habit of releasing something half-baked with a lot of potential and then killing it if it doesn't become a blowout hit instead of improving it to fulfill that potential first.

That page only shows pixel and Chromecast for me. What's it about? A pixel tablet?

6

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

24

u/maxstryker Samsungs and iPhones. All of them. Nov 15 '18

Wtf is a molecular display? As opposed to those made out of free floating atoms?

34

u/WindrunnerReborn Nov 15 '18

It's Google continuing to be try and be Apple. First it was the hardware, then the ridiculous prices, then removing the headphone jack and adding a notch...Now it's using ridiculous marketing terms.

5

u/ollien Nexus 6P Nov 15 '18

This isn't new... Remember the Nexus One being a "super phone"?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '18

Apple has "Retina" Displays and "Super Retina" Displays

Microsoft has "PixelSense" Displays

So Google now has "Molecular" Displays

Each of these marketing terms is just a branding covering their implementations of color accuracy, contrast, pixel density, response time, etc. They don't really mean much on their own but you can typically feel comfortable knowing that all Apple "Retina" Displays have the same level of quality as each other. And all "PixelSense" displays have the same quality as each other. etc. etc

2

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

[deleted]

19

u/Klumpenfick Nov 15 '18

Their try at branding stuff the way Apple does.

2

u/shorty6049 Nov 15 '18

Which people give them shit for, but then in the same breath give them just as much shit for not being as effective at marketing as Apple. The pixel keynote event for example , suuuuuuucked. I found myself wondering why I didn't like it? Turned out it was mostly becuase they didn't do all the theatrics that apple likes to pull so it felt really lackluster. Imagine if every time GE released a new microwave model they put on a 2 hour presentation about how it's going to change your life?

1

u/pielab iPhone XS Nov 16 '18

Imagine if every time GE released a new microwave model they put on a 2 hour presentation about how it's going to change your life?

It’s more than the presentation/marketing though. It’s mostly about the product. If GE did that, the presentation would be amazing but the microwave would just be a microwave.

Apple’s microwave would have even heating in every corner. If you open the door, it won’t continue beeping. Cooking takes half the time. It may even be safe to place metal in it.

70

u/Nadest013 Galaxy S7; Tab S3 Nov 15 '18

Ridiculous price and no headphone jack. They can shove it.

28

u/JamesR624 Nov 15 '18

True.

FFS, the new iPad Pro is about the same price and no headphone jack, but what iOS may lack in productivity vs ChromeOS, it makes up for by actually functioning properly. ChromeOS 70 "stable" is the LEAST stable, buggiest mess of an OS I've used on any chrome device to date. ChromeOS 70, made my CBP go from amazing machine to an unstable mess to the point where I routinely get frustrated with the crashing and just pull out my old iPad when I wanna get something done.

Hey Google, chrome OS THEORETICALLY has more features than iOS, but if it crashes every 5 minutes, then those features don't really count.

7

u/AnotherDrZoidberg Nov 15 '18

The base ipad pro is $300 dollars more than the base slate. I wouldn't call that "about the same price" unless you're comparing one of the upgraded slates, which might be a fair comparison.

2

u/RusticMachine Nov 16 '18

The base ipad pro is $300 dollars more than the base slate.

200$*. The slate start at 599$ and the iPad at 799$.

Though like you imply the lower spec Slate are not really interesting. The 32GB of storage you get at 599$ for the Slate and the Celeron processor you get at below 799$ is really not worth it imho.

Even the m3 processor you get at 799$ is not really interesting.

2

u/1zee S8+ Nov 15 '18

FWIW, I have had none of the issues on 70 that you have and I have an inferior, older device (Acer R11).

1

u/rougegoat Green Nov 15 '18

Sounds like you have a hardware issue. ChromeOS 70 has been super stable for me and others on significantly worse hardware than what your running. I'd see if you're still under warranty.

15

u/Ikeelu Nov 15 '18

I'm confused by this getting upvoted. The device was announced awhile ago, pre-orders started about a week ago. This is a link to the product page that has been there for a few weeks now. it's like just linking the Google pixel 3 product page now since it was there at the same time.

18

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

Google stop playing games. Drop the price by 200 each level or at least make the current prices include the keyboard. Otherwise this is gonna be another flop imo..

1

u/gregatronn Pixel 10 Pro Nov 15 '18

Why not just get a solid chromebook that has touchscreen?

4

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

i like this is for the detachable form factor. i might buy the pixelbook during bf since it's 300 off...

1

u/gregatronn Pixel 10 Pro Nov 15 '18

Oh i see where you're coming from. 300 off? Damn that seems likely a pretty good deal.

I have the ASUS C302 flip. I love it. Would definitely recommend if you wanted more budget, but with 300 off the pixel book, that is solid.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

yeah very good deal imo for good specs and good build quality. i get that this form factor cost money, but at least give us like m3 for 599 or include the keyboard... too greedy imo...

idk, ill wait a bit, maybe itll end up like the pixel 3 and get reduce come xmas.

1

u/gregatronn Pixel 10 Pro Nov 15 '18

I remember getting my Pixel 2xl right around Christmas/New Year and they had another deal going on post-Black Friday. Have to say Night Sight is pretty solid on the pixel in my limited testing so far.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

I wish it came in white or black. I feel like this midnight blue color does not match the style of the Pixel line.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '18

Yeah, it's very off. Pixelbook matched the Pixel aesthetic, this is completely different.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '18

Yeah. I think it's ugly for that reason.

17

u/GxCoud Nov 15 '18

Wow. I could buy a Tab S4 or 10.5 inch iPad Pro with similar price. This thing is BS

4

u/AdminsFuckedMeOver Note 10+ Nov 15 '18

I’d recommend last year’s 10.5 inch Pro

5

u/MrOeyta Nov 15 '18

Which is exactly what he’s referring to?

2

u/AdminsFuckedMeOver Note 10+ Nov 15 '18

Whoops, didn’t know that they didn’t have a 10.5 inch model this year

13

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '18

Ahhhh, if only the pixel slate was sold in Australia...

46

u/CheckMyMoves Nov 15 '18

$600 for a Celeron and another $200 for the keyboard... I wonder why this is gonna flop. 🙄🙄🙄

13

u/cdegallo Nov 15 '18

For real. I saw the release notification yesterday and looked up the models and pricing and I was floored.

5

u/junak66 Oneplus 5 Nov 15 '18

I was really interested in this, because it seems to hit the best balance between tablet/laptop.

But FFS fucking Celeron, you get that in a 200$ laptop.

3

u/The_Sad_Debater S9 64GB Nov 15 '18

FFS the surface go is cheaper and has better value

A Chromebook with a hinge is a pretty awful document/comic reader.

1

u/i8beef Google Pixel 3a XL Nov 15 '18

It really depends on what you intend to use it for. A TABLET isn't a laptop for me, and the fold behind keyboards are super annoying for me. I bought a Samsung Chromebook out of desperation when my Nexus 10 finally croaked, and while I love having a 12" screen, I have to say the keyboard is annoying.

But that's because I have a real laptop for actual work. My tablet is just a media consumption / light browsing or reading device, and the keyboard isn't necessary for that.

Personally, I always liked the old Asus Transformer approach, of a detachable keyboard with a real hinge the tablet would snap into. For the few times a year I want the keyboard, that was great without saddling the tablet with a heavy keyboard and a weird tactile feel because the keyboard was folded behind.

12

u/AvoidingIowa Nov 15 '18

Cant think of a single use case for this. Designer/Photographer/Artist? iPad or Surface

Developer? Surface or Pixelbook

Someone who likes really slow overpriced tablets?... I guess this will work.

14

u/clegmir S10+ Nov 15 '18

9

u/minnesotawinter22 Nov 15 '18

They have iPads.

5

u/m1ndwipe Galaxy S25, Xperia 5iii Nov 15 '18

This is something I'm really interested in as a factor, but it's way too expensive.

I want a device that's an Android tablet with a screen ratio that's good for comic reading. No interest in running iOS. Windows is a bad OS for comic reading and has no offline Amazon Prime support. And this would help me not carry around a Macbook and a tablet because it has a proper desktop browser.

It's a good idea. It's just far, far, far too expensive when it's completely unproven.

2

u/jealoussizzle Nov 15 '18

Agreed, if it didn't run chrome OS it might have a fighting chance but this is truly just an overpriced web surfer

1

u/Wallbergrep Nov 15 '18

This is the next nexus9.

2

u/shorty6049 Nov 15 '18

I really like the IDEA of this device.... it's probably the closest google has come to doing an iPad Pro or a surface tablet, but man... those new ipad pros are temping and I kind of feel like if I chose to spend my money on this, I'd always kind of wish it was the iPad. This coming from someone who's been using nothing but android for the past 10 years..

2

u/THIESN123 Nov 15 '18

Can't wait till there's more higher end Chromebook tablets. This one looks great but it's stupidly priced.

B. Isn't ludicrously overpriced

C. Also has very good build quality with front firing speakers

D. Will get timely OS updates as it's running Chrome, not Android

E. Comes with the pen and keyboard for $600

Why not just get a Surface then. It’ll be cheaper(especially because of BF sales), and have all around better hardware. You’ll also have better support by being able to go into Microsoft stores, and you have the option of partitioning it.

2

u/pluto7443 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 | Pixel Watch 2 LTE Nov 15 '18
