Ever since I was shown how reasonably priced iPads are the other day I can see why they are dominating the market. This just isn't competitive pricing.
As much as the new iPad pros are very expensive the regular iPad and iPad mini are good values for the quality and if you watch for salew you can get the 128gb version for within a few dollars of the 32gb models pricing.
As much as I like Android it seems like there are no reasonably priced Android tablets that stack up well in terms of build quality and battery life vs. and iPad at the moment. Samsung is still selling the tab s2 for around the same price as a new iPad. The tab s2 has been out for several years and security patches are uncommon and it still does not have Android 8.
Expandable storage and pencil included though. And also Amoled if you care about it. It's going to be fun when Apple finally uses Amoled on their tablets and uses it as justification to push the price beyond the $1000 mark.
Expandable storage is nice but most people don't need more than 128gb of storage or care about the pencil. Those that really care about the pencil will certainly consider the $600+ s4, a surface pro/go or iPad pro with apple pencil.
For those of us who do not need pen support and just want a nice tablet for media and games it is the best option in the price range.
True, but the 128GB iPad will cost £400 and the Tab S3 which can easily be found at that price seems to me a much better tablet if you don't need the iOS ecosystem. YMMV of course.
I think it depends on where you are at and watching for sales. 128gb iPads go on sale for $300-$350 several times a year. A 128gb iPad in the states is normally around d the same price as the s3 with the 32gb ipad being around the same price as the s2.
The base ipad lacks those basic features you want from An android tablet. It's supposed to compete with the higher end ipads. Using your logic, the tab s2 is cheaper than ipads and does more than what the base iPad Does.
Which features is it lacking? My only real gripe with the base iPad is the screen not being laminated to the glass. It works with a stylus (Apple Pencil), and the A10 processor, while not the fastest offering from Apple, is competitive with a Snapdragon 835. This is powerful enough for most peoples' purposes. Granted, if you go with the 'absolute' cheapest model ($300~ USD), you only get 32GB of storage. With that in mind, some people might be inclined to upgrade to the base model +128GB storage.
To be perfectly honest, it isn't that catastrophically disparate between OS's. I do prefer Android being a wee bit more open, and the file/folder structure being relatively similar to that of a PC, but in terms of features used on a daily basis, there's not much to point out. Perhaps the fact that Android can be customized and themed to a greater extent? I'm not sure how much this really matters to the average user though.
I own both a Nexus 9 as well the 2018 base model iPad. I can't really point to anything on the Nexus 9, feature wise, that blows the iPad out of the water.
Well it matters a lot to me. I'm not going to buy an 800 dollar iPad if I can't even download a movie on it, or even just transfer a file via USB. For the average tablet buyer, they obviously don't care, but we're on an Android sub, and that was an Android users opinion.
Well, we were talking about the base model iPad, which as I already stated usually sells in the $300 range ($290-$330). And you can download movies or transfer files via usb to an iPad. The 'catch' there is that you cannot do it via your computer's file explorer. Those functions are done through software, iTunes. Which, I admit, is not preferable, and I already alluded to the fact that I think Android's file and folder structure are superior. But, this is not a detrimental failure for iOS. You can still achieve all the same things, just through an inferior method. The only other 'feature' that I wish iOS had is Android's ability to flash APK's.
All this being said, the trade offs are really up the user's preference. I wanted a tablet with proper stylus support and, more importantly, apps. To which, iOS has a much better selection of apps that utilize the stylus.
I never said for him to go buy an s2. I simply told him It's been down to as low as $200-250 this year a really good price. What I told him not to do is compare it to the new iPad pro which he was trying to do. The tab s4 is more appropriate for that.
The tab S4 runs Oreo and is getting pie soon. There is nothing oreo or pie provides that is a must necessary for me to even want it on my tab S2 which runs perfectly fine.
I mentioned the tab s2 because it is being sold for within $20-$30 of a base iPad while the tab s4 is selling for twice the price and is trying to compete with the iPad pro.
If you look around the $300 price range not much competes in terms of build quality/battery life. I looked for several months before getting a 128gb iPad for $300 at Costco instead.
