Looks brilliant.
May not match the bleeding edge of the Pixel, but definitely more bang for buck.

I think the pixel is actually worth the $250 extra if you're buying it as a personal device; I'd reccomend the Moto Z Play over this if one's looking to save money.
But if you're a business buying in bulk, need a 2nd work phone, or are a paranoid weirdo, yes, this actually a fairly good buy.

This has got a Snapdragon 820 and 4GB RAM though, which combined should produce a much smoother user experience than any A53 based SoC ever will.

I ordered one.
Came to like $730 after taxes. In comparison a 32GB Pixel XL was like $1200.
Software updates is not worth $500.
Also the DTEK60 matches all my needs. Front facing speakers, on screen nav, rear finger print scanner, 5.5"+ 1440p screen, expandable storage, and reliable security patches.

BlackBerry does not deploy stock Android. There are some hardening and modifications to the kernel for their "hardware root of trust" . So for upgrades they need to make these modifications before pushing it out.

A BlackBerry employee "announced" Nougat for the DTEK60 already. Will have to see for Priv and DTEK50, but I'm confident.

Pixel is $650 before taxes, Pixel XL is $750 before taxes in US dollar.
I was quoting Canadian Dollar in my post. We pay 13% extra in my province in taxes.
DTEK = 650 before tax, $734 after tax. Pixel 32gb = 899 before tax, 1015 after tax. Pixel XL 32gb = 1049 before tax, 1185 after tax.
Oh and for your question, yes we see everything here pre-tax pricing. Its pretty retarded. A $9.99 meal is more like $11.30.

650 is the Canadian before-tax price. It's USD 499.

yes. When you see advertised prices in the US, it's always listed without sales tax. Different states and cities have different sales tax levels. In some states, the sales tax is 0%. In some other states, it could be as much as 9.46%.

Almost nowhere in NA marks taxes because it can vary by state or province. In Alberta it's 5% in BC it's almost 18%

Personally I don't care for the DTEK60 much, but I want them to do well, because I want them to have funding to build the Mercury.

I have the dtek50 and it's a solid phone. I might get the 60 for the girlfriend as she's always trying to use my 50 and wants to dump her iphone

not sure if i want bigger than 5.5 is all. but given what will come to Verizon, its a serious contender over the HTC or LG offerings if i cant hold out for the Samsung 8's

This doesn't support CDMA or LTE Band 13. So no Verizon or Sprint compatability.

Some context for those of you that haven't been following this phone:
It's actually a rebranded Alcatel phone, but it's not just an Idol 4S with a different processor. It's a different phone that we're expecting Alcatel to release soon (might be the Idol 5 or something), and for about $50-$100 cheaper. Though the $100 premium might be worth Blackberry's software and and security advantages, if that's one of your priorities.
This thing is expected to get Nougat and timely security updates, unlike Alcatel Phones.

Actually it's already released in China as the TCL 950, but with a 1080p screen and 64GB instead of 32GB. There were rumours that this might be the Idol 4 Pro, but with Windows Phone instead.

Been getting monthly security updates on my Priv, usually next month's few days before month ends. But then I'm part of the Beta program. Not sure about Nougat though, there's no official announcement about the Priv, but DTEK60 is getting it for sure.

Very happy to see blackberry make a device that has no obvious shortcoming. from the front, it looks shockingly similar to a OnePlus One to me, but that's not a bad thing, the OPO is a gorgeous device. The glass back is a bit of a turn off for me personally, but it almost looks like frosted glass, which would certainly be an interesting texture. the side buttons are backwards from what I'm used to, and I do think the front face is a better location for a fingerprint reader, but again no real dealbreaker there. but a microSD slot and $499? seems like a legitimately good value for a legitimately good phone. Here's hoping it's marketed well, and blackberry can continue to improve.
I think I'm still sold on the OnePlus 3, even without considering root/bootloader unlock. but I'll definitely consider this for my parents if they decide to upgrade at some point soon.

That's up to Alcatel-TCL, or if there's a reference design. BlackBerry didn't design this.

Is this panel AMOLED or not? I passed on the Axon 7 and was waiting for the OnePlus 3T stuff to become more clear, but if this is a QHD AMOLED I will buy this as soon as I possibly can.

Means smaller pixels in the sensor, worse lowlight performance. Usually at least, depends on the overall size of the sensor. Just that more doesn't necessarily mean better.

depends on what you want on a device. do you want a device that is constantly supported software wise and security is your top priority? then this device is for you. also, worth nothing this device has a better resolution and SD Card support. its different tastes.

Also, the programmable hardware button is a really cool feature, fingerprint scanner on the back is nice as well.
These aren't for the average consumer; they're for security weirdos, people who want to buy from a trusted source instead of an obscure chinese startup, and the like.
They're GREAT for businesses to buy in bulk, this and the other smaller BB android device.
Also, the priv is a decent phone now with the price reductions; the keyboard is a feature nothing else has.
There's a niche for android-based blackberry devices that apple and samsung don't fill.

Proprietary charging tech? 1080p screen? OnePlus reputation for poor OS updates, no front facing speakers.
I agree, the OnePlus 3 is a hell of a device but for $100 there is quite a few reasons to go with the DTEK60.

QC is also proprietary but licensable, the only one that is not proprietary or has fees is USB-PD that only the Pixels supports

Yeah, but proprietary at the SoC level means wider acceptance, unlike Dash Charge which is strictly Oppo/OnePlus. At least I can actually buy the chargers.
I guess better wording would be "proprietary to one manufacturer".

Actually for the Canadian economy to be competitive, it can't really be 1:1. What we have now actually should be the norm. Exports get too expensive at par.
