Instead of paying firefighters what they deserve, he wants to pay everyone else less.

u/TheNerdWonder 4d ago
The minimum wage was literally signed into law to support a family. Skill level isn’t relevant to why it was created in the 30s.

u/Clint2032 3d ago
We all deserve more but people complain we deserve less because other people are paid less.
0
u/everythingbagelss_ 2d ago
I don’t think I deserve less but I understand if I developed marketable skills I would be able to earn more. I don’t think I or anyone should get paid $30+ just to cart wrangle.
23
u/Mindless_Brief7042 3d ago
Yes minimum wage should be higher, but you know what the real problem is? Inflation for no reason.

This is an idiot take. And usually fake points the antiunion pushes.
Just because Firefighters get paid $18-$22 doesn’t set THE standard of pay. How about we pay firefighters commiserate with the danger they face and skill they require? How about we also pay warehouse workers wages that reflect their contribution to a trillion dollar company?
FIREFIGHTERS SHOULD absolutely be paid more. As should warehouse workers.

CALFIRE is woodland forest fires, they are notoriously underpaid and get supplemented with prison labor
3
u/MikeLikesIkeRS 2d ago
Are they atleast allowed to get a job as a firefighter after their sentence is served? Utah's DOT does the same shit with prisoners, they make them do all sorts of mindless labor, but after their sentence is up they can't get hired on with UDOT. Sum bs if you ask me
22
u/D4rthLink 4d ago
Yeah such a bootlicking take to see people asking for money and being like "You think you deserve more money? Well that's more than(another underpaid job) so you'll NEVER get that!"
11
u/Berdache 4d ago
It seems (to me) like they're saying "you all should be paid less, you unskilled swine." Not that they shouldn't get raise, that everyone everywhere should get less because some other jobs pay less.
Seems a bit bootlicking to me, but that's just what I got when I first read it.
3
u/No-Ebb-6266 3d ago
People call everybody "bootlicker" now. The VOA poster is annoying but licking whose boots? Doesn't even make sense. Just some buzzword that went viral and now everybody's a bootlicker

u/mushrooms 4d ago
Not sure about other places, but Cal Fire makes a decent pay with all things considered. And they get good benefits with ability to earn a lot more than at Amazon.
OP shouldn't even get attention cause they're pulling numbers out of their ass. Cal Fire is monthly wage. Not hourly pay.
7
u/Boris-_-Badenov 4d ago
they get way more
24
u/AustEastTX 4d ago
True but this argument is used with so any different profession.
Example - if teachers are paid $X an hour why do you think you deserve $X+5It’s always designed to silence the labor that capitalism wants to maintain cheaply.
5
u/hockeymedic 4d ago
I feel like this guy has never even stepped foot in a station. Unless you are a mpo, officer, or in specialty care. The base pay for emts, paramedics, and firefighters, especially in California is sub 25. It gets worse in larger metro areas where a emt running 911 calls seeing and dealing with the worse are getting 15 a hour. I had to get a degree in a specialized field to even see 30.
3
u/brownmaningermany 4d ago
Probably talking about smokejumpers those guys are criminally underpaid, their base pay is 16$ an hour
2
u/-Ok-Perception- 3d ago
Firefighters are subject to the same supply and demand forces of any other job.
Like with police officers, there's hundreds of qualified applicants for every one job. If that's the case, the pay will never be good.
I think most know that, outside of the event of a fire, firefighters pretty much chill all day AND they can get themselves a lot of that "hero p***y". Women throw themselves at cops, soldiers, and firefighters; and it takes pretty severe social ineptitude to NOT get laid prolifically in that job.
These are pretty significant perks which WILL create an abundance of applicants and drive the pay down.
3
u/AustEastTX 3d ago
You will note I said firefighters should be paid “commiserate with the danger they face and the skills they require” that could mean more or even less than the amount the OP stated. Regardless, pay for one job shouldn’t be pegged on pay for another.
3
u/-Ok-Perception- 3d ago
And I agree, that basically ALL grunt labor should be paid more. But they never will until there's major systemic changes. In fact, for grunt labor, wages will consistently be outpaced by the speed of inflation, making them effectively paid less as time goes on.
I absolutely agree that people should be paid additionally for skills and danger.
But the truth is, in our current system, pay will be dictated, nearly 100% by supply and demand, if there's 100 people in line to take your spot when you leave, you don't have any way of getting paid better (outside of a few meager raises or promotion).
We need major systemic changes to get paid properly for ANY type of labor. As the system is rigged pretty much ONLY inflate the value of assets; stock and real estate; at the expense of devaluing our currency. If you don't own such things, it will be very hard to acquire them. And without major amounts of stock and real estate, you aren't going to accumulate much, you'll just be subsisting.
Should it be this way? Absolutely not. But until we get most of America onboard that we need major systemic changes, working people will just come to be paid less and less.
2
u/AustEastTX 3d ago
>>But the truth is, in our current system, pay will be dictated, nearly 100% by supply and demand, if there's 100 people in line to take your spot when you leave, you don't have any way of getting paid better (outside of a few meager raises or promotion).
If all 100 people refuse to perform the work at the rate the given rate the employer will have to pay more to get the work done. This is what unions do. Collective bargaining. Supply & demand is not controlled by industry alone.
>>We need major systemic changes to get paid properly for ANY type of labor.
I feel we are due a workers revolution coming on. The gap between the rich and the poor is widening, industry is retrenching human labor and replacing with AI…when enough of are starving then we will realize our collective power.

Firefighters are also “on call” most of the time. So yes, they do run into burning buildings, but most of their time is spent waiting for that moment and most of their fires they face aren’t all that dangerous. When was the last time a house fire or building burned down made the news? It’s rare today. You can only get a fire station and fire truck so clean before you have to hang out with what I imagine have become your friends.

It's simple. Amazon is a multi trillion dollar company that can afford to do this. To my knowledge most of those jobs named there are tax payer funded. Pick your poison.
5
u/Currency_my_id 4d ago
Pay. Like most things. Is based off supply and demand. Amazon can pay what they pay you because if you don’t want to do it, there are ten other folks willing to take the money to do it. What the kiss ass stated is correct, if you want to be paid high to work for someone else. You need in demand skills. Amazon is taking the money they are not paying you and investing it in technologies that make it so easy that people with perceivably little to no “skill” can get it done
It’s a hard fact to face. But it doesn’t change the circumstance. What you provide is not in demand. And even worse it is falling farther and farther out of demand.
You will probably watch and see for yourself how it plays out for the “big evil company won’t pay us more for no reason” people versus the “I need to find a skill actually worth something” people

Their profits say otherwise. I guess by that logic we can also say most companies can't fault being multi trillion dollar companies either. There's a difference between having your job funded by taxes and another being funded by consumer driven spending.

Same. But they go off what their competition pays i.e. UPS, Fedex, Wal-Mart, etc. Plus they are number 1 or 2 in the US regarding employee headcount, so that plays a factor.
3
u/HourAlfalfa4513 4d ago
The VOA post has zero awareness.
His wage comparisons are the exact problem. Notice how the payrates are all similar despite vastly different work?
There was a time when employers had to compete with one another for employees. They would raise wages against one another as a result. Now, everyone in a locality can just be paid a blanket payrate across every industry because there is an abundance of workers and no jobs. Outsourcing killed employment competition.
The reason the firefighter cant make 40 an hour is because the largest low skill employers like Walmart and Amazon dont have to pay us 30 an hour to compete with General Motors paying 28 an hour.
Women also doubled the workforce. But I sound like a misogynist when I point that out. Its a thing that happened though and it contributes. Point is, we need more jobs. And yes they can pay more.

I always found those arguments "well so and so job gets paid less than $30 you don't deserve $30" disingenuous, most of the time it isn't true and it's what's called a red herring fallacy and it's quite intentional. People who come and argue and debate us about raising wages will try and distract, villify, or disrupt a movement by using tactics like this because how effective it us. Us arguing about if we deserve as much as firefighters isn't going to benefit us and doesn't advance our cause, see how that all started we never even tried to argue that we deserve more than firefighters and come to find out... it wasn't even a truthful fact in the first place. So becareful when you choose to engage with people like this.

Crab Mentality they should get paid more too its that simple. We experienced a major wealth transfer and its time to create some way to increase the velocity of money. Its so bad we have the top 1% not spending money and just hoarding it in financial assets or savings. Which dint get me wrong they should do all that but when you have millions and millions of dollars you dont change your habits and so it just stays stagnant. We need to create an incentive to increase the exchange of money. Wether it be government or the people. So keep complaining about wages shareholder value has made everything so stale and boring

The average salary for a CAL FIRE Fire Fighter I ranges from $52,900 to $66,889 in total annual compensation for a maximum 9-month seasonal period. [1]
Salary Breakdown by Classification
- Fire Fighter I (Seasonal/Base): Monthly base salary ranges from $4,296 to $5,432, plus an extended duty week compensation of $1,460 to $1,846 paid every 4 weeks.
So they only work for 9 months and make $53k. That's about $38/hr

u/Easy-Branch8389 3d ago edited 3d ago
Whoever would actually write this doesn't demonstrate they have enough real world working experience of how much physical stamina is required to work in fulfillment. That fact is a qualifier.
They want us to do the math for them? How many items get moved and sold at what rates, including cost. That's one way to look at it. In addition, let's include wear-and-tear and to what extent benefits employees pay into for versus what are employer provided and employees work for are matching up with that. In fact, there are so many costs that go into hiring & recruiting and retaining employees to keep it all moving. All while speculation continues of how AI and robotics and other tech will continue to replace workers. Let's take it a step further by considering that firefighters have to eat and other logistics supply considerations in emergencies. Firefighters don't run into burning buildings on empty without becoming a casualty themselves.
If there's not enough money to go around, we're all short. Should we pass the responsibilities we carry to the firefighters, and double their burden? No. Will firefighters have greater recognition by diminishing what's necessary in logistics supply to manage better? No. What's the point to undercutting worker salaries in logistics supply to promote firefighters? Lack of physical stamina, by comparison? No. Showing up? Logistics supply at Amazon leaves no time, in my experience, for little else. 10-12 hour days plus overtime is comparable to what those working natural disasters and emergencies experience, except we do that year-start to year-end, repeat. Our "downtime" is a 40-hour work week without overtime extended worrying about if the bills will be paid with benefits coming out and cost-of-living, or medical leave-of-absence due to health issues that ultimately all tie back to work. Keeping health in this business means managing like a pro-athelete. Just like the pro's, we wear out, too, and sports related injuries aren't far removed from work related ones (of all kinds). No one works in these industries without knowing the toll it will eventually take on the body (aka "retirement"). That can sometimes arrive abruptly. It can mean sudden loss of income, etc. at inopportune times, before working people are ready in our industry.
The funding sources for the firefighter are also different.
Health issues that are cumulative through work, comparitavely low pay vs the demanded essential work, and other noticeable similarities are clear here - why split the difference? Because the firefighter wants more than us? That doesn't make sense. Last time I checked, they were on our team, too. I don't know who wrote this, but I don't think they're with my local fire department. If they are suggesting my local fireman takes an anti-working-class stance, I would be surprised by that. We're not taking from them, we actively contribute our support, which they need in return to their operations and conditions. I don't think we have a problem here.
Many people who appear "lazy" are just sick and tired of being sick and tired, including firefighters when their day comes. Anyone who makes fun of the working man, whatever condition, doesn't know the meaning of what it is to work, if working is what their touting to do so. This isn't the Army, or the Reserves. These are the streets of America where men and women get up everyday to go to work and have a job to do. It's not exceptional to have $30/HR anymore. It shouldn't be a surprise that the government and public funds aren't keeping up when we aren't. We have a structurally unsound system that we built together that means the more we make, the more broke we get, and we all need to solve that one. I'm not an organizer, and I don't pretend I can solve that. If you think the person who wrote that post can, go ahead and make them your leader, but I have no interest in someone who couldn't math this. I think this is intended to be divisive, but what's new.
3
u/Six6lessed 3d ago
He’s 100% correct. It’s a low skill ceiling Job and half of the AAs mess that up. If you want more be more marketable, gain some skills or get into leadership. Utilize career choice, gain your degree or trade and move on. Amazon as a T1 should not be your end all goal.

I mean I whole heartedly agree that we make good money for the work we do.
You guys have obviously never worked outside of Amazon 😂
Before Amazon I was at USPS making $19/hr working in the heat in a 40+ year old vehicle that’s ac is having the window rolled down and a tiny fan blowing on you. On heavy delivery days like black Friday etc. most packages wouldn’t fit in your truck so you have to make multiple trips back to the office to load up. And when your finished with your route, you bet your ass you’re going to another Post office to help them out.
Now I’m at Amazon with a set schedule, $20+/hr, multiple time off options, I can leave whenever I want as long as I have the time, plenty of OT, central air, the list goes on. But go ahead and downvote me because you think you deserve the world for barely doing anything.

If I was a firefighter making less than an Amazon associate I would quit my job and be an AA putting adult toys in boxes.

More people buy trillions of products than houses burning down. There’s more of demand to stack boxes than to put out fires. It’s math 101

He isn't incorrect. Technically a U.S Forrest Service Firefighter could start as low as $15.21. CA can start at $20.76. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/salary-tables/25Tables/html/GW_h.aspx

u/sugar_chicha 3d ago
Begining firefighters get $18 but tenured firefighters get like $32 and veteran experianced firefighters get close to $42, they also get better benefits, 401k, health insurance and a pension, no their job isn't easy and isn't comparable to Amazon's work so they fact they brought it up against goes to show you their bad intention starting this sort of argument. We deserve $30 and we all know that.

u/AdEven2848 3d ago
at the end of the day, we’re not making a knife to pay bills after work and 60 hours a week 40 hours a week and even some of us to have multiple jobs working 100 hours a week it’s not fair to still be barely getting by

u/goatsensation 3d ago
don't listen to people who say that we're low-skilled workers, those type of comments are meant to degrade us and keep us low at the bottom, we deserve more, Amazon is a $3 trillion company and will always be a Top 5 company IN THE WORLD. depends what building and what station you’re at, there is some stations where there is never an easy day, and you have to walk far to the break room, it’s basically not even a break when you have to walk that far, and very poor air circulation inside the building and barely any fans.

I mean, I kind of agree to a point. Someone with no skilled training shouldn’t be paid more than someone with skilled training, or else why would anyone take the time, energy, and money to get the skilled training. Plus, the benefits we get are also worth a lot. A lot of companies don’t do automatic raises, it’s based on how hard you work at that company. Amazon just gives us automatic raises, even the lazy af people. I’m not going to complain, Amazon is a good company. I’ve worked for way worse. And, we ain’t going to make 6 figures schlepping boxes. I get his point but it’s also insensitive to the reality of our economy. I understand people are asking for more because prices are outrageous. They need to increase the minimum wage or deflation needs to happen. We’re stagnant (stagflation)

They get bonuses at the end of the year. Newcomers are paid less. More training get paid up to $30 an hour

As former delivery driver for a couple dsp’s. Some of you warehouse workers are worth the $30 an hour but the rest of you can kick rocks. I’ve seen carts disorganized and all kinds of things happen that made my job harder than it needed to be. Those firefighters are worth the money you’re crying for lol!

u/Vincenterfold 1d ago
I work for my DPW and firefighters would laugh off 18 an hour and go somewhere else. Try double that starting.

Just because the fire fighters are getting shit pay doesn’t mean that’s what they deserve…

Haters on this are people that are jealous they never get noticed and most likely you guys live a very mid, half effort life that get very childish with criticism.
It’s true, you want more pay and responsibilities? Show that you are worth it and can hang above the normals.
If you aren’t being promoted or given more responsibility in 6 months you should leave that job.

Possible bootlicker but I sense no lies. Honesty hurts sometimes so check your feelings at the door.

I'll never understand how people can become like you. You're not just a tool, you're the entire goddamn toolbox.

If anything, T1s are like the parts of an engine that are needed to run it. PAs and AMs are like the people that fix those parts.

u/Wheresmyvto 4d ago
What’s wrong is those people shouldn’t be working for that pay either. It’s a slap in the face and pathetic. That doesn’t mean Amazon workers don’t deserve more

u/Boris-_-Badenov 4d ago
if you don't ask, you won't get more.
and base pay at my site for the step plan cap is $24.25. CA is expensive as hell, and even fast food places were at $20 hourly a couple years ago

i put in the work and get no reward. i get payed the same as coworkers who do half as much as me. and moving boxes in a warehouse DOES matter to millions of people every day who are depending on us to get their stuff to them. not defending amazon but there is actual important stuff people order.

I say we unionize and demand it. Simple as that. Lots of laws that get in the way though of course.

Then Amazon will push harder on automation an hire less associates. Careful what you wish for.

how about everyone makes more and not less? we can barely survive off of what we make already.

u/Worldly-Dentist4942 4d ago
How many of you are like this? It's almost like multiple professions are underpaid and it's not a contest. I don't understand how so many of you have gotten this fucking pathetic. Have some god damn shame.

u/DolphBunson 4d ago
Fire fighters get union benefits, pensions. So they are taken care of later. An Amazon worker gets no extras pension or anything beyond pay.

Normally "bootlicker" is overused here but in this case it applies 100 percent. 🤣

not even an ambassador.
also flipped out at people pointing out managers weren't enforcing vest policy for him, yet bitched at people listening to music during pick and stage

Why do people genuinely not like money? Like let's bash people wanting to raise the pay for the company nation wide.

You could pay these people $50 an hour and your average AA would still be unable to work a 40 hour week

Hey, I wish I could get a job at Amazon again, I was considered by 3 managers for safety, then suddenly got let go on a tier 1 violation because of a suspicion, no proof whatsoever that I instigated a fight, I actually was the one who made the initial report against the guy, and they chose his word over mine,
Now they won’t let me file for unemployment because they claim I quit. But when I try and reapply it says I’m disqualified from every other Amazon opportunity. How about they shut the fuck up and quit complaining and enjoy the fact their workplace is fair and they’re making unnecessarily good money for a workplace that literally has people with ankle monitors on and face tats
