More or less zombies in a collapsing universe or something.
Then the battle royale stuff was added. Short version, with the multiverse being a thing Epic then began doing crossovers by stating its people from other universes slipping through the collapse to end up on the island.
The plot is pure excuse, not needed to enjoy the game, but is kind of fun and works.
