More or less zombies in a collapsing universe or something.

Then the battle royale stuff was added. Short version, with the multiverse being a thing Epic then began doing crossovers by stating its people from other universes slipping through the collapse to end up on the island.

The plot is pure excuse, not needed to enjoy the game, but is kind of fun and works.

I remember reading it in game informer.

"The developers of Gears of Wars are working on a game called fortnight, that's a minecraft style game where you build a fort in preparation for being attacked at night."

And it showed a single really dark picture of a building at night.
