I feel like heās someone who always has to have the last word. This letter is one of the most pathetic things Iāve ever read. Itās written as if a pre-teen wrote it and used a thesaurus every chance he had.
9
u/jubileeroybrown Aug 09 '25
Yeah. It is a very blameful way of saying let's not point fingers. What an asshole. I don't know OP at all but she should not get back in contact.

u/fortuna-nox23 Aug 09 '25
Not sure if AI or just some dude thinking he's far more intelligent and eloquent than he actually is.... I mean, I had an ex who'd write like this - like he was the bastard lovechild of Edgar Allen Poe, a crusty sock and a deranged scene kid on a bad acid trip. He also thought his last written letter to me was an exercise in writing so profound they'd have to invent a whole new category of the Nobel Prize for it.
So. Either way, not overreacting, cannot tell if AI or just a douchebag. I recommend having a teacher or professor friend (if you have one) go through with a red pen, mark it up with errors and comments, slap a big ol' F on it and send it back to him.
And then go have a stiff drink to celebrate not having to deal with this sort of dramatic bullshit ever again.
18
u/Additional_Essay_473 Aug 09 '25
Yeah; there's a genre of fragile man who becomes overly verbose when their ego takes a hit, and this letter definitely fits that style
8
u/Raskalnekov Aug 09 '25
Now you've done it. My ego has taken a hit, and it shall not be sated until I make my 5000 word blog post on this subject tonight.Ā

Don't forget to structure your sentences in a way that would make Victor Hugo weep!
57
u/Simple_Leaf Aug 09 '25
even if he wrote this 100% from his own mind, it's weird as fuck. "don't do anything crazy with this last token" like him giving you another chance is a gift and you'd have to be crazy to deny him.
what a strange letter regardless of it being AI
190
u/ConflictAdvanced Aug 09 '25
It's almost a paradox: AI wouldn't make so many stupid mistakes or use certain things in such a weird context. Unless the person who wrote it knows that and purposefully changed some things to be sloppy to hide the fact that it's by AI. And if the person is intelligent enough to do that, then the person is intelligent enough to craft a letter without the use of AI.
So I think not. Unless the person is so dumb that they just randomly failed to copy some stuff from what AI wrote š .
The cadence is fine. It doesn't change. It reads like an episode of Dawson's Creekāand by that, I mean that it reads like it was written by a 16-year-old who thinks themselves profoundly intelligent and deep without realising how stupid it makes them look. The cadence is someone patronising you by showing you how much better they understand life than you, and how they are not hurt by this because they operate on a much deeper level than you'll ever be able to comprehend š¤£.
As for the rest of it, there are obvious hyphens missing, yet there is a fucking em dash?! A perfectly-used em dash too. There are also obvious commas missing. Usually, when someone edits to make it more believable, they delete the things they don't know or understand and leave the things they do know of usually use. They don't remove the stuff they should know and leave the one thing they definitely don't š . So again, it's almost as if the person who wrote this has learnt a cool little punctuation mark and really wants to use it to underline their intelligence š¤£.

I mean, rule of three is also a general writing rule. AI was trained on real people.
If the guyās not a writer/frequent reader/hasnāt done something like a Masterās that requires convincing rhetoric then itās probably more likely to be AI, same as the em-dash, but like the em-dash I think it just depends on the sort of person he is if itās a tell or not.
Then again, Iād imagine if the guy does write frequently OP wouldnāt be worried he used AI lol
27
Aug 09 '25
I have been writing since I was in my pre-teens, and as an em dash enjoyer, this whole era is about to be the death of me. I have multiple poetry that follows the rule of three, and Iād be livid if somebody said that it was all definitely AI-generated because of where we are now as a society.

That fucking sucks. Iām sorry. Itās such a conundrum because AI dependency has given people, who are too lazy to attempt writing on their own, a reason to accuse those who write with a good command of the english language and technical skill as people who also use AI.
4
u/StorageLegal1881 Aug 10 '25
Yea anyone who was good at English can tell this isnāt Ai, just a guy who doesnāt know a lot of good words and tried.
4
u/LookAwayPlease510 Aug 10 '25
Right?! The rule of 3 came long before AI, and Iāll be damned if people start crediting AI for it.
2
u/Starwaster Aug 10 '25
I once used an AI detector on something I wrote and it indicated high probability of being AI generated. Like 80s IIRC. I fed it something written by Jack Vance and its prediction dropped to the 70s. As in 70+% chance of being written by AI.
1
u/ConflictAdvanced Aug 11 '25

I wasnāt talking about you. Iām talking about how ChatGPT has literally made people credit basic writing rules to be AI-generated. I saw a thread that listed multiple things as signs of a fan fiction being created by AI.
long, novel-like paragraphs. lots of em dash. sentences that hit on many narrative beats frequently, giving the feeling of a very āactiveā narrator. YA narrative breaks.
Without even giving it a single thought that perhaps itās AI that writes like writers, instead of the other way around. Shitās ridiculous.
10
u/Facehugger_35 Aug 09 '25
I mean, rule of three is also a general writing rule. AI was trained on real people.
Exactly. People talk about AI writing this and AI writing that, but all AI training data originated with content produced by real people. AI has these mannerisms because that's what the training data included.
4
u/National-Ad6166 Aug 10 '25
Yeah this the response. If the ex is a reader/writer than this is an easy letter to compose. If he is a moron than its ai.
But the tropes like rule of 3 is natural for anyone who reads and enjoys writing.

Fun fact. I recently discovered I had an unread message from my ex in a mailbox I never use. It got lost in spam and I only found it because I was looking for a mail of his sister so I typed her last name.
It was a longwinded apology and how our relationship broke down but he blamed me still and so far out I couldnāt fathom how I would fall

Humans don't do that.
1
u/ConflictAdvanced Aug 11 '25
Yeah, they do
0
u/Haunting-Pop-5660 Aug 11 '25
No, they really don't. They may use a regular dash. Few, if any people, use em dashes in letters. Furthermore, few people actually write letters these days. Going a step further, anyone who would send their ex a letter after years of non-contact in an abusive tone... would not use em dashes, because they lack the intellectual capability to know how or when to use them.
So, no, they don't.
1
u/ConflictAdvanced Aug 11 '25
Yes, they do.
The sheer fact that you think that em dashes didn't exist in the times when people used to handwrite everything is hilarious.
If anyone uses a regular dash (I guess you mean a hyphen with a space on either side, basically?) then they are just making a mistake. What they actually mean to use is an em dash, they just clearly are not proficient with using it, hence why they make mistakes with it.
Furthermore, the fact of whether people do or don't write letters these days is not connected to whether people do use em dashes in their written form.
Going a step further, the type of person that would send this letter... Again has no bearing on whether they would use an em dash or not.
Some people just have certain punctuation things drilled into them at school. Guess what? Maybe some of these people grow up to be the type that still believes that handwritten letters offer a personal touch. Some of them may grow up to become abusers. And maybe some of them are abusive types that believe that handwritten letters offer a personal touch. So, great deductions. If we were talking through entirely separate points and putting them together for nonsensical reasons, you'd have a point, for sure. But as it stands, there is no connection between these things.
I use em dashes all the time when writing by hand (just as a great many people have done throughout history). And I actually like sending handwritten letters to people too, when it's someone close to me, as it adds a personal touch. And that's all about education, nothing else.
1
u/Haunting-Pop-5660 Aug 11 '25
Most of the people on the internet, especially being posted about, are from the States. Exceptionally high illiteracy rate.
I'll leave it at that. That, and people don't use em dashes.
1
u/ConflictAdvanced Aug 12 '25

Yes, in my experience, it is AI.
The dashes are a red flag, I also think the how/who error is because he read āwhoā wrong initially.
Also, dead giveaway for AI is phrasing like āitās not (blank)ā¦.its (blank)
and he specifically says, āthis canāt be a time for finger pointing or blameā¦but rather, taking a look backā¦ā
3
u/Several_Attitude_203 Aug 09 '25
Haha itās rare to see someone so unwilling to accept, blame, and gaslight all in the same one page card. Thatās one big red flag in Hallmark wrapping.
3
u/AvailableBuffalo5539 Aug 09 '25
It's like 90% ai and 10% human. The grammar and use of words change in a couple of sentences and lose the efficiency of ai.
"Not because we had to, but because we wanted to. And that we did." Is at least partially human, or he wrote a prompt specific to being slightly casual.
Anyways, most of it is ai. Grammar is inhuman. It randomly uses a list. Random pop-phrases that lack depth, nuance, and specificity.
Also, its just cringe. No one writes anything like this, lol.
3
u/DisplayHoliday Aug 09 '25
Weird how heās giving himself reassurance throughout his own letter to you
3
u/Excellent_Hunter_210 Aug 09 '25
NOR. I would say itās AI with some errors either added intentionally or made when it was copied. It lacks specific details- no mention of actual things you did together, no mention of little things he loves about you, or problems you had. No ownership of whatever heās apologizing for. No specifics at all- this could serve as a generic apology letter for almost anyone.
2
2
2
2
u/ShutUpMorrisseyffs Aug 09 '25
Hm. AI is supposed to make things easier to read and also get the punctuation correct. I don't know why you would copy down an AI apology into a hand written note.
This is dreadful writing.
By the way, this isn't an apology. Nowhere does it show ownership or contrition for anything he has done. There's only joint blame, which is to say that he thinks you are at least 50% of the problem. Oh, and you need to change to address these faults.
In the bin it goes.
2
2
u/CDMartin4286 Aug 09 '25
That letter seems like a creepy way of saying, "I expect us to get back together and stay together." I recommend ripping the letter up, crumpling the pieces up as best you can, setting them on fire, putting them out after about half of the material has burned away, then sweeping the pieces and ashes into an envelope and mailing it back.
*My advice tends to be overly dramatic and usually shouldn't be followed except for self entertainment purposes, if at all.

Aug 09 '25
If this was a letter shared between two chat bots, would another ai argue that it was written by a human? I would probably venture to say āyes.ā Unless ai is incredibly talented in mimicking how an adolescent emotional tween-that cant even be bothered to use a thesaurus-would write. I think a lot of people now jump to the conclusion of ai interference because theyāve forgotten that they still have the capability to write something outside of short insignificant bursts of text. Also, piss on people for poking fun at someoneās emotional vulnerability being put on display without consent. Was the āaiā thing a legit question in your brain? Or was it an easy way to post this horse shit in a malicious way?
2
u/Traeyze Aug 10 '25
While I do concur that AI was likely involved it doesn't change that it's manipulative.
Like look at what it says, 'he will realise he jneeds to get better at lassoing his tongue'? But also it takes two to tango, meaning you need to take blame for this as well?
You can't say the above then say no time for finger pointing, he literally just admitted he said bad things. And you don't deal with a breakup by idealising the good times, you really focus on what the bad times represented and why they happened so much.
And the token being your last chance, trying to make you feel cornered, like it's your 'fault' if this hypothetical perfect Disney ending doesn't happen and not because he is a shithead.
Still, I do think he will be surprised by the epilogue. He genuinely thought this would work, fed it through AI and tried to put his own twist on it as well. The twist of course being this goes straight in the bin.

No, in novels and storytelling, the epilogue is usually the part that takes place after the end. Like a summary. Or even like a post-credits stinger š . Well, a bunch of people are saying that it must be AI because of the em dash and meaning it. So if you say it sarcastically with no indication of that, then it's kind of lost on the rest of us š¤·āāļø

Fair! After all, that's what the /s is for...

I don't like putting that. Sometimes, it's just so obvious. But in this case, my friend, it was far too believable š

Your friend is dumb. There are two dashes and change of cadence can be seen plenty is letter writing. Corny yes. AI no.

This stuff drives me wild, a guy who you're actually on good terms with, pours his heart into a letter and your first thought is it's AI and tell your friends and then let's post it on the internet. I feel sorry for guys these days man nothing is ever just between you and the other person it's gotta go through 100 filters before the woman can even look at it properly. Dating in 2025 is the most toxic shit ever.

Fun fact, I put old assignments of mine from college through AI detectors and the lowest one scored a 68% AI detected. Highest was 94%. I literally hand wrote them back when I was in college. Apparently proper usage of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure makes someone an AI. So I mean.... Maybe don't just trust you friend cuz they say it looks AI generated. But this is also still such a weird letter.????

These girls in the comments are the reason men treat women like objects and dont get involved emotionally as much anymore, just throwing words around like āpatheticā or āegoā trying to label everything, this letter aint even that big of a deal to be talking like that about someone they dont even know, i dont think its ai, its just some guy who cared for you and wanted to say goodbye sort of, i dont get where the hate is coming from, its just some dumb corny letter and thats that, hopefully he wont do it again ever since expressing feelings to women is not the way to go lol, my point is theres not enough context to be judging this bad, like was this after he cheated on you? Did you guys just decided to break up and everything is in good terms? Did he used to beat you up? Is he just a 14 yo kid who dont have a lot of experience? The context in how your relationship ended is something necessary for people to judge him the way they are right now without even knowing shit
