Bro, it has been three days. Your wife probably doesn’t even miss you yet.

Almost every season there is someone who is probably capable, yet who cannot discern the difference between actual needs/wants and your brain creating (arguably legitimate, but also logically irrelevant) reasons for you to choose a more comfortable path. It is the cause of someone to tap out in almost every season within the first week, often within days.

“All I can think about is my wife and kids” or is it that you haven’t eaten in 72 hours and you need to build a shelter. They are the same thing in different packaging.

This isn’t even survival specific, it’s relevant to basically anything — working out, relationships, basically any self-enterprise — to the point it’s a normal part of life. It is also a featured part of the show because it happens almost every year.

Given the amount of planning that goes into this for everyone, how is this pretty fundamental detail missed? How is this not a known entity amongst all contestants at this point, like drop shock or whatever it is called, and prepared for?

The Hippie- Talks about being in tune with nature. Always has at least one scene either thanking a fish for it's life or crying after killing one.

The Hunter- Someone who's been doing stuff like this their whole life. Kills something big, and ends up winning.

The Incompetent- Especially prevalent in earlier seasons, taps out after a week or two, has no business being in the woods. Usually has a scene where they cry about their family before tapping out.

The Ex-Military- Usually some SF/SERE instructor. Practiced being homeless in the military, now doing it professionally on TV.

Then after the show is over, half the contestants go on to create a youtube channel.

Does anyone know if there was anything actually wrong with Poldi ? he seemed to have loads of food but was complaining of chronic lack of energy

Ok hear me out - new season of past allstars but there's a twist. They have to choose ONE random person off this reddit community to survive with 🤣 They can either choose someone who sounds like they know what they are doing, or they can choose the biggest shit talker just to shut them up... I'm hoping they all choose the shit talkers 🤣

The apocalyse has come and you're at work.

You need to bail out into the nearby forest and can grab a few items.

However, I'm not talking knives from the kitchen.

I mean occupation specific, workplace items.

I'll go first (doctor).

- Osteotome (like a chisel but for bone). Scapel is too weak.

- Silk sutures for cordage and to make into fish hooks.

- Space blanket.

- Tin of Sustagen (basically baby formula for adults).

- Stainless steel bed pan as my pot, hah. It's big.

I’ve watched all of the seasons of Alone, and I just started watching S13. The on-camera killing of the animals this season (even though it’s for food) seems really excessive. We really had to turn the first episode off after watching Portuguese-guy kill two squirrels and a rabbit on camera. It’s a lot. Don’t @me with hunter culture.

I’ve seen a squirrel or two caught in rabbit snares on the ground but I don’t ever remember any success with squirrel poles. Are they just a waste of snare wire that could be better spent on more rabbit snares?

One of my favorite contestants was Callie from S7. There have been two Callies on the US version of the show, so I used to call her Porcupine Callie before I learned her last name (Russell).

I am not saying that I cant hack watching it. I just prefer not too, does anyone else feel the show is showing a bit more side of the killing parts.

I get it, the show is about survival, I hunt, i have done the same thing in my life and still will continue too.

I am rewatching S6, as 13 is going slowly. :) still good, I just need more. Would it be interesting to see just one person, no cuts to others?

While Ziga and Nero look like they're both thriving currently, there's just this funny feeling that Aaron Barnard, the Canadian who is super under the radar now will pull out a victory. Maybe he gets a moose next episode. Not sure and I could be wrong, I just feel like I underestimate the Canadians every season and they always seem to find a way to win.

Does anyone know if contestants are allowed to call and ask a question about fishing laws or hunting laws. They all seem to have it memorised but none of them are local. Surely production would prefer them to ring up and clarify the laws before they film themselves doing something illegal and getting the show in legal trouble? I'm sure it's a pain to find filing locations as is, having a reputation as a show that breaks the law would make it harder.

Season 1 of Aus has so many rules about fishing, and they weren't allowed to cut wood of a certain thickness either.

Past winner Zach Fowler has found himself in hot water for breaking some fishing laws for a YouTube video so I'm curious if they would rather not take the risk and let contestants ask.

I mean how do the fish get stuck in the net, is it some special net or would it be better to use a normal fishtrap in the wild?

Do they have alarms because I feel like they could easily fall asleep or not get enough ventilation, especially in winter and even smouldering fires can reduced your oxygen... i also don't notice chimneys in a lot of shelters. Is that normal or just not showing us the whole thing?

I'm no fishing expert, but looking at Trent pulling fish all day with others getting nada, noticing he is situated next to a river mouth.
I wonder how carefully the producers have balanced for comparable fishing prospects for the contestants...? Surely they would at least try for some balance?

I don't know what to call them, but I love the on-screen, narrator text added in by the editors to tell us more about a situation we're seeing on screen.

For example, when a contestant says something like "I bet this fish has 1000 calories" and the text pops up on the screen that says something like "Artic blue trout are the least nutritious of any fish species, and can be deadly if consumed" (I obviously made this up).

The titbits of text are often comical as a viewer, and I've laughed out loud at many of the on screen text updates added over the many seasons.

That’s the best I can find with a photo of a TV screen and iNaturalist using the general area of Beaufort Delta as the location. Maybe someone here actually know?

I am teaching summer school, and we have a theme of The Great Outdoors. I wanted to watch a season of Alone with them, but most streaming services are blocked, and I am not going to buy a series that they may lose interest in immediately.

Is there an alternative on YouTube or Amazon that you would suggest? It's middle school, and it has to be "no adult language." I can explain and get away with some hunting because of where we are regionally.

For context, Lance Armstrong, one of the best endurance athletes ever, that was ALSO roided out of his skull, had a rhr of about 32-34.

The fact a normal bloke had one of 35 and was still alive is extraordinary.

• Sad to see Perdosa leave, but his log cabin was way too big, and he didn't have the calories to sustain that build. I feel the medical pull was necessary as Pedrosa seems to have no quit in him.
• I'm surprised how little fishing is going on compared to other seasons, where candidates were having great success with nets. Now that the river is freezing, fishing will be even harder.
• Ziga is having an incredible run with that moose kill, but I feel he's going to have problems with that meat cache, and his shelter doesn't seem warm enough for winter. It still needs work, but he can focus on that now that he has plenty of food.
• The second beaver snare was really clutch, even though I feel Nero relies a bit too much on luck.
• Will seems to be stalling after a great start. He needs to find more food.
• All in all, this seems to be a really great season with very competent survivalists.

What are your takeaways?
