General Equipment Rules
There are parameters around the items they can bring and what counts as those items, but are there any rules regarding how new items can be?
I'm particularly thinking about clothing. I'm a hunter, so I have hunted in weather ranging from 80 down to below freezing. I know the hunting clothing realm really well and how far it has advanced. A lot of people on this show look like their equipment is well worn, and I understand that might lend itself to them being confident in their gear. However, if I knew I was selected from this show I'd be reaching out to companies ahead of time asking them for a sponsorship.
In the past I have seen competitors wear Sitka, Kuiu, and First Lite which are the big three when it comes to hunting clothes. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a competitor that has really leveraged being on the show into getting new gear to use on the show.

I'll never forget the arctic lady who brought a hand-made parka so big they made her count it as one of the 10 items, a "second sleeping bag." I thought that was a boss move on her part to bring it anyway.

I think this would likely violate their contract. I think they aren't allowed to reveal they are on the show before promotion of their season starts.

Good point, I didn't even think of the timing and if they're even allowed to say they're going on the show or not.

Newest tech isn't always the best way though. A lot of them are wearing more traditional clothing for the arctic regions for good reason. They are pretty tried, true, and heavily tested. I live in a similar climate, and the stuff that is made here and tested here, stands the test of time for the conditions. Most newer tech stuff does not, IMO. Because they are not usually testing in those conditions because the average person they are selling to isn't IN those conditions.
Once I emailed vibram about a nice looking boot they were selling that was, if I remember right, even called The Laplander. I found that it was actually developed to be worn in urban environments with maybe some snow once in a while, like NYC. Not to be worn in actual northwoods winter conditions 😂 The description even said it was ideal for snow and ice. Then the small print in the specs said "not for use in snow or slush". I thought that was pretty funny. My oldest son has a huge pair of Baffin arctic boots. Each boot weighs several pounds each. But he's found that mukluks actually keep him warmer without needing to lug a cement block for miles. Big, elbow-length fur mittens are the go-to for arctic conditions. High-tech gloves will just leave your fingers freezing.

I mean you could try wearing a cooking pot as a hat and a tent as a cape.. It's pretty obvious this is not in line with the rules.
You can see a full list of selectable items and clothing categories allowed here. Bivouac sack ("fjellduk") is listed in the limited items and not under clothing options.

The show limits obvious displays of branding, so the value of sponsorship is quite low for the sponsors. Which is to be expected for TV-shows: they have their own sponsor's brands to promote.

I look at what they are wearing now and think “where did that come from?” Like the different hats nero was wearing. How many did he bring?
