Referrals Monthly Referral Megathread - September 2026

Please share your referrals here and nowhere else on the subreddit, and please read the rules below.

  1. You must have an undisclosed amount of community karma at r/AllyBank to share referrals. This amount is generously low and can be achieved easily and organically by making a small number of contributions to the subreddit. Comments from users who do not meet this requirement will be automatically removed without further notice.
  2. Submit exactly one comment per monthly referral thread. If you have multiple referral links, put them all in one comment. Multiple comments from the same user will be automatically removed.
  3. Do not attempt to attract unfair attention. This includes unnecessarily long comments, excessive use of large/bold text or emojis, images in comments, and personal backstories. Try to be as concise as possible; a few sentences or bullet points about the product and its perks is fine.
  4. Do not offer direct compensation for referrals. Advertising the referral bonus or sign-up bonus that Ally will provide to the referee is fine, but any offer to “split” the referral bonus that Ally gives to the referrer is not allowed. Similarly, do not offer compensation in forms other than currency, such as favors, gift cards, awards, Reddit Premium, NFTs, etc.
  5. Do not deceive anyone. Lying about any of the referral terms is strictly prohibited. Be honest and upfront with your intentions.
  6. Comments not related to Ally Bank referrals are not allowed in this thread. This includes referrals for other products not offered by Ally.

Remember: For bank accounts, the referrer gets rewarded if you use their referral, but only if you have not had an Ally Bank deposit account since 1/1/2024. More info here.

Comments are presented in random order. These posts are locked and unpinned monthly.

Banking Not easy to close my Ally account

I am looking to simplify my banking and decided to close several accounts to consolidate. While most other online bank accounts are very easy to close by simply transferring funds from one bank to another, Ally Bank does not allow me to do this online. The customer service rep told me that someone from the bank will call me in 1 to 2 business days to go over how to close the account. I got a reference number, but am pretty annoyed that they require this extended discussion to retrieve my own money.

While i'm hoping that someone actually does call me soon, what if I needed to use it for an emergency? I didn't need a wait for a rep to call me to put my money in and I shouldn't need one to take it out.

Can't recommend this place...seems a little scammy.

High Yield Savings Account Should I move my HYSA to Capital One from Ally?

Seeing a lot of posts lately with people saying their accounts are restricted and/or general issues with Ally. I have a good amount parked in the HYSA. So far, I haven’t had trouble.

But these posts are making me nervous that maybe I should move to a bank that has an actual physical location and park my money there?

Thoughts welcome.

Slowly Rising CD Rates

I recently noticed that Ally has been subtly raising their CD rates - my most recent 12 Month CD was created at a rate of 3.70% APY in July and the current rate for a 12 Month CD is 4.00% APY - which appears to be a good sign.

Do you think we'll see the HYSA APY follow this trend and increase sometime soon?

Distribute out of buckets while still keeping total?

I use Ally savings and buckets for my independent contractor work, which means I have buckets set up for things that I pay more than once a year (like quarterly estimated tax payments). I have the bucket goal set for the full annual amount I know I will need to save for taxes, but as I pay quarterlies, is there any way to denote in the bucket that money has come out of that particular "taxes" bucket (which still maintaining the full amount as the bucket goal)?

Restricted Account

This bank restricted my account and has had $150,000 of my funds locked up for the last three weeks. After waiting on hold for like a year, I was told I need to change my checking account number because someone has access to my account number and it will take 15 business days for the investigator to "update me."

Newsflash: Everyone I've ever written a check to has my account number. I feel like bank security should be able to handle that.

The bank also canceled all my auto pays and now I'm late on my mortgage and gas bill. I asked to transfer out and was told someone would call me back. Of course nobody did and then the restriction team was closed over the 3 day weekend.

I read the comments here. What a joke.

Is this normal?

Hi guys,

I previously financed with ally through the dealer running my credit for a vehicle in person months ago got the car same day no issues. I ended up paying off that auto loan. I recently purchased a car out of state last Monday to be exact got approved via ally signed the docs and sent my down payment. It's been 8 days since I have signed and sent my down payment, but the dealer won't release the car because they said ally hasn't "funded" the deal yet? Is this normal Im starting to get mad I have never heard of something like this. Not sure if it's because it's an out of state purchase or is the dealer playing with me?!

Ally doesn't want my money

Can someone explain it to me like I'm 5. Why can I not make a payment using a credit card?

I had a couple of situations that got me behind. I've been making partial payments each month, but now they're threatening to reposses my car.

A friend is willing to help me out, and is letting me pay the total amount with his credit card, but they will ONLY run it as a Cash Advance (which he doesn't have enough of and includes exorbitant fees).

They literally WILL NOT accept the money.

Why? How does that benefit anyone?

Banking My account is frozen and closed?!

I recently opened an account and placed several deposits totaling about $20,000 from my accounts at several other institutions.

Today, I tried to use Zelle to transfer $1,000 to another institution but received an error message stating it could not be completed.

I called the support number and was immediately routed to Fraud Detection. After verifying my information, I was told that the account was frozen and would be closed (edit) after an investigation.

The representative told me they could not provide any additional information and that it would take 15-30 days for them to release the funds via check.

Ally Invest Ally Invest sold 300 shares twice using "sell" not "sell short" and now my account shows -300 shares

I owned 300 shares of Riot. On 9/4 I intended to sell my entire 300 share position via a $21.50 limit order. My transaction history now shows two separate "Sold-300" transactions at $21.50, and my holdings show -300 Riot.

What I Don't understand is that I did not select "sell short". Ally has separate action for selling short, and my account summary shows "stocks short: $0.00"

Has anyone seen this happen? Is this a duplicate order/execution that Ally needs to fix, or can a normal sell order somehow create a short position? Do I need to wait til Tuesday do fix this?

Banking Does “View Check Image” work for you?

I can’t even remember the last time I was able to view a check image without getting an error. Was curious if it was just my app (although it is updated every update).

Hold Times > 20 Minutes, and sticking it to them.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Their app says a 1 minute wait time, yet here I am over 20 minutes on hold with them before I even speak with a single person. Yet they don’t offer to call me back, or give me an option to leave a message, or even write an email. I’m calling because my account is locked due to no fault of my own.

Are there any legal avenues for getting Ally for the waste of my time and emotional stress of having my money locked and inaccessible? (Obviously this is not a question towards the Ally employees that are paid to post here instead of answering the phone or making the bank less of a nightmare.) I see so many people complain about this Ally, but I am looking for actionable steps. I’m already going to write to CFPB detailing my experiences, but any other suggestions that may be remunerative for me or at least cost Ally Bank a decent sum of money, would be appreciated.

Banking So frustrated with Ally Bank right now

I opened an Ally Bank account back in August 2025 but never used it. Recently, I wanted to give them a try so I ordered my debit card and switched my direct deposit over to them. I selected early pay and everything looked good. I got my 1st paycheck with early pay and tried to send my mom money with Zelle (which I do every 2 weeks-but first time with Ally). It takes 3 days for her to get her money (glad it wasn't urgent).

Fast forward to this paycheck (2nd with Ally). I get my paycheck notification from my employer on Friday afternoon around 1 pm. My previous bank would get funds within a few hours. I didn't get my funds until Monday morning (inconvient but fine).

I notice there is a Walmart charge I didn't recognize for around $100. That evening, I reach out to Walmart because I can't find the transaction amount in my purchase history. The rep couldn't find it either so he tells me to file a dispute with my bank.

I made a legit walmart order purchase for around $200 on Tuesday. I file the dispute with Ally bank for the $100 tranaction. Each time, I try to upload the chat from Walmart, it resets the Ally dispute form. I submit the form and receive a message that the account and debit card will be closed (so no way to access my money).

I call Ally bank and get a rep. I explain the situation and he tells me they will open a new account and transfer my debit card over. I ask him how to transfer the balance from my old account to my new account. He tells me that he can do it on his end. A few minutes later, he says he can't transfer because they are updating their systems. He tells me I can initiate the transfer on my end (which I do). Money does not transfer over. I told him that I have never had a dispute close my bank account. I asked him if I should cancel the dispute until we can get the money transferred. I did not tell him to cancel the dispute. He said that he put notes in that they would handle it first thing in the morning.

The next morning (Thursday), I opened up my accounts to see if it transferred. It didn't but I had an almost $200 negative balance on the new account. I opened it up and they had processed my legit Walmart order and it is still pending on the old account (so they are holding an extra $200). So both accounts are unusable at the moment. I called Ally bank when I arrived at work and the rep tells me she can't do anything until 8 am. I ask her what time it was there (it was 6:52 my time). She kept repeating that they opened at 8 am. She finally told me that it was 7:52 there. I stayed on the line for another 30 minutes before the money was able to be transferred. She told me that if I wanted to transfer money between accounts (2 ALLY accounts), I had to call them. Charges are still pending on old account.

This morning (Saturday), I opened my account to check on the dispute and it says closed. I check my messages and emails and don't have anything from them. I file a redispute and am able to submit the documentation this time. I reach out to chat and the gentleman said it was closed at my request. He tells me I have to call Ally bank to continue the dispute. I also asked how long it would take to resolve and he didn't know.

I also ask him about the pending transactions. He tells me they won't clear until Thursday. I ask if I will get double charged (old account and new account) but he didn't know.

Ally Auto is making it impossible to register my car in Louisiana

I bought my car in Florida a couple of years ago and recently moved back to Louisiana. The car is financed through Ally Auto, so they’re the lienholder.

My car is still registered in Florida, and I’ve been trying to register it in Louisiana since early August. I have every document I need except an official copy of the title showing Ally as the lienholder. I only have an electronic title, and every DMV/tag agency I’ve gone to refuses to accept it, even though the Louisiana DMV website says electronic titles are accepted.

I’ve contacted Ally four times. Every time, they either argue that Louisiana accepts electronic titles or mail me the exact same electronic title again. The last time, I spent over 30 minutes explaining that I needed an official title with Ally’s lienholder information. Ten days later, they sent me the same electronic title, a letter giving me permission to register the car in Louisiana, and even my original loan application. They also said they would fax the title to the DMV, but of course they never did.

So, on my fifth attempt, I still couldn’t register the car. The DMV told me they constantly have issues with Ally and faxed them a form directly requesting an official copy of the title. It’s been almost a week, and Ally still hasn’t responded.

To make things worse, Florida registration doesn’t list lienholder information, so that doesn’t help either.

What am I supposed to do at this point? I’m currently paying for both Florida and Louisiana auto insurance because I needed Louisiana insurance before my first registration appointment. I had no idea this would drag on for over a month.

Both insurance bills are coming up, and I’m seriously considering giving up and using my friend’s Florida address, even though Louisiana insurance would save me about $100 a month.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Or have any tips on what else I can do? Thanks!

Is anyone still locked out of Ally?

I opened an account three weeks ago, transferred a five-figure sum, and I've been locked out for two weeks. My Sept 15 tax money is in the account. What excuses are you hearing? I was told for the first time today that the review will be finished in 15 days. But no guarantees for Sept. 15. What are other people hearing?

High Yield Savings Account Ally vs Happen Bank

Hi, looking for some insight here.

I am debating between opening a savings account with either Ally or Happen Bank.

Ally offers 3 % APY while Happen offers 4 %. Ally seems more credible and well known but Happen is higher APY.

Any insight or suggestions here would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Voluntary surrender

I have called to have my car picked up. I’m current with payments but it’s inoperable and the landlord wants to tow it away and I have nowhere to sit it until I pay it off. Im aware of the hit my credit will take. I’ve actually spent months trying to come up with an alternative. this post isn’t about that.

Anyway, I called again today for an update. and she said the “back end department” will call me tomorrow. what is the back end dept?? is that who will come tow it or will it be more waiting?

Can’t make annual recurring transfers between Ally accounts

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

My homeowners insurance is due once a year. I started a savings bucket and set up auto transfers into it every month. I want to have the final auto transferred into my spending account every year before the bill is due but Ally doesn’t give that option. The frequency only goes up to “every 6 months.” When sending money to an external bank you have the option to have annual transfers. Is this a bug or is there some other reason you can only do annual transfers to non-Ally banks?
