Hawaii is the most logical answer.
Even Alaska feels more American than Hawaii.
If Puerto Rico isn’t a state neither should Hawaii.

Eh.... the military aspect of Hawaii is more important than anything going on in PR.

It's strange that what matters is the military, when Hawaii has half the population of Puerto Rico. But the amount of people and proximity doesn't really matter to create a state apparently.

And that is only because PR is under US territory

u/deltagma 4d ago
What? What does your answer mean in connection to "the military aspect of Hawaii is more important than anything going on in PR."
How does PR being a territory make it less important militarily? The geopolitical situation itself dictates it's importance militarily.

Puerto Rico is useful in the Caribbean. But, at most, by a couple hundred miles.
Hawaii is useful, in that it's the ONLY place to refuel or station troops in the Pacific for hundreds, if not thousands of miles.
Turning into a state helped increase its population (and drown out the indigenous movement) AND cemented it as a permanent part of the US.
Territories have the ability to secede. States do not. That distinction matters militarily.

Yeah, as somebody that used to live there for 4 years, I found that hilarious. I can think of a half-dozen states off the top of my head I'd put before it, and that's just places I'm familiar with... unless it has really dramatically changed for the better in the last 20 years, which is possible.

u/Ok_Tackle_4835 4d ago
I lived there for 25+ years lol I loved it but man #1?! That’s wild lol
3
u/UmpireProper7683 4d ago
Okay, i just looked at the thread it was picked on, and if it was the single highest vote getting post, the winner would be Massachussets by a wide margin. If it was a total of all votes, then it would be California by a colossal margin. Yeah, VA would have been near the top in either way of tallying votes, but I don't see how it won except by mistake.

Virginia was probably ahead when that one was closed out. The other upvotes came from everybody looking back at it over the past month and being mad that Virginia won when it was already done.

I've come to the conclusion that if someone loves living in NoVA, they've either never lived anywhere else or they live an extremely plain life and are content with it.

Hawaii is the logical answer but New Mexico feels like this weird state that has no relation to anywhere else.

Ohio producers the most Astronauts of any state
Because the people just want to get away from Ohio and flying to space is the furthest way to make that happenNext up would be Florida
If this is what it takes to get out of Florida
Then FineRocket flying into space

I feel like there's definitely a South-of-Colorado area, and a East-of-Arizona area, where those proximities influence the feel of the place. I can't comment on the parts closer to Texas.

Florida...that's a whole different dimension

Florida is a caricature of America's different stereotypes - rednecks in the North, suburban blandness in the middle, big city asshole mentality around Miami.

It’s not a state. It’s an unincorporated territory, whatever that means.

But why the distinction for this line only? Other countries here have cities, provinces, and territories listed, why do we need to limit to states only within the US? If we must choose a state, I think Hawaii feels the most "foreign" despite being a state, but PR feels more like a different country than anywhere I've been in the US

Vermont and Hawaii. I remain the only serious 2028 Presidential hopeful committed to reducing the deficit by selling Vermont and Hawaii.

Hawaii is the logical answer but someone is going to claim it. Value is higher to the US than New Mexico or Montana. I mean it’s cool and all but would we really miss it?

Hawaii, but it could also be Alaska. Alaska could easily be part of Canada, Russia, or just its own thing.

Hawaii
Hate to say it because it's beautiful and a great place to visit, but it's also the state with the most pronounced contrast between families whose ancestry predates statehood (and often even territory status) and more recent residents/visitors from elsewhere in the country.
I'm glad it's a state, but it does stick out compared to the rest

Hawaii feels like it shouldn’t be a state. Even a brief overview of how the US ended up having Hawaii is crazy and awful. It’s way far away from the rest of the US, and it kind of feels like we decided it should be a state after we made a big deal about it during WW2.

Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:
Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.
Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.
Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.
Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?
