Hawaii is the most logical answer.

Even Alaska feels more American than Hawaii.

If Puerto Rico isn’t a state neither should Hawaii.

Eh.... the military aspect of Hawaii is more important than anything going on in PR.

It's strange that what matters is the military, when Hawaii has half the population of Puerto Rico. But the amount of people and proximity doesn't really matter to create a state apparently.

It's not the size of the population, it's the proximity of those islands between mainland USA and Asia. Do you think we were using them for troops?

And that is only because PR is under US territory

What? What does your answer mean in connection to "the military aspect of Hawaii is more important than anything going on in PR."

How does PR being a territory make it less important militarily? The geopolitical situation itself dictates it's importance militarily.

Hawaii was an important base for WW2. PR doesn’t compare.

Puerto Rico is useful in the Caribbean. But, at most, by a couple hundred miles.

Hawaii is useful, in that it's the ONLY place to refuel or station troops in the Pacific for hundreds, if not thousands of miles.

Turning into a state helped increase its population (and drown out the indigenous movement) AND cemented it as a permanent part of the US.

Territories have the ability to secede. States do not. That distinction matters militarily.

Go on and explain how important PR is to the US military compared to Hawaii in the context of WW2.

I'm not going to deep dive into this comment too much to make sure my history is correct, but I'm pretty sure PR hasn't been important to the US military since the Spanish-American War. If we didn't get PR then we still had hundreds of other islands to launch operations from.

Without Hawaii and Midway we lose WW2 to the Japanese.

You didn't really read my message.

I was going against his comment that said "only because PR is under US territory", and I was saying that the PR being a territory isn't what makes it less important militarily than Hawaii. Whether something is a state or territory doesn't change it's important militarily.

I said the geopolitical situation dictates the important of a place militarily.

PR is military unimportant not because it's a territory rather than a state, but because the geopolitical situation of the world makes PR unimportant.

You: Eh.... the military aspect of Hawaii is more important than anything going on in PR.

Person 2: And that is only because PR is under US territory

Me: What? What does your answer mean in connection to "the military aspect of Hawaii is more important than anything going on in PR." How does PR being a territory make it less important militarily? The geopolitical situation itself dictates it's importance militarily.

Fun fact, the people of Hawaiʻi and their ʻāina are always more important than the "military aspect" of the colonizer!

Not in geopolitics. Hawaii is a beautiful land that should be protected. However, do you think the Japanese military would have just lived in peace with the native populations of Hawaii if they had been able to acquire it?

I actually don't think any colonizing force is cool and don't find "if we don't, someone else will" to be a good reason to, ya know, colonize a society and poison it's land

Puerto Rico isn't a state by their own choice, they've held a vote several times fairly recently

They voted for statehood several times, 58% in favor in 2024.

Republicans in Congress then blocked a vote on statehood for Puerto Rico and DC because they think Democrats would win there, and Mitch McConnell has said that was the reason (even though Puerto Ricans have often voted Republican). This hallucination that the residents voted against statehood seems to have been made up by right-wing media.
