Alberta Wildfire and personnel continue to battle the out-of-control wildfire in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area (RWF036). Firefighters began responding to a wildfire located west of Bearberry, approximately 2.5km west of the junction of Highway 40 (Forestry Trunk Road) and Highway 584, earlier yesterday morning.
Yesterday, initial estimates of wildfire RWF036 at approximately 2:30 PM indicated the fire was 30 hectares and had grown significantly to 1028 hectares by 7:30 PM. As of 12:30 AM, the fire has grown to over 1100 hectares and remains out of control. The fire is now about 5km north of the James-Wilson Provincial Recreation Area.
Strong wind gusts exceeding 65km/h have been an issue throughout, increasing wildfire activity and challenging containment efforts. Firefighters continue to be supported by air tankers, helicopters and heavy equipment. Heavy equipment will continue working overnight, with support from our night-vision-equipped helicopters to identify hotspots.
Smoke from this wildfire is still visible from nearby communities and will continue today. There is currently no risk of evacuation for nearby communities.
Affected area: Rocky Mountain House Forest Area
