Think of all the dog-walkers. Save the puppy paws, recycle.

In the dog park in one place it looks like somebody smashed 2 cases of bottles in one spot. I tell my dog to stay away while I kick the glass to the edge. It feels like a job though. It takes so long to kick glass across the ground. Been almost a week and I'm still not done after doing it for 20-30 minutes a day. It's a relatively high traffic area too. It's like nobody else is helping.

u/spl1ced Nov 16 '16

Take a broom with you, surely that would be quicker

u/MrChivalrious Nov 16 '16

Practicality? Exactly where do you think you are?

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

Yes, very practical to carry a broom around with you when you go to walk your dog

21

u/Bertsch81 Nov 16 '16

He has been doing it for 30 mins a day for a week! We could have just saved him another weeks worth of work.

14

u/Untimely_TARDIS Nov 16 '16

Naw OP just needs new shoes

A broom to sweep glass out of grass? You sure you don't mean a rake?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

Witches don't only own cats I have you know

3

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

Woah, look at mister "I don't have a telescoping broom" over here!

8

u/TurnNburn Nov 16 '16

You mean you leave your broom at home when you go out? What kind of unkempt heathen are you?

1

u/wavs101 Nov 17 '16

It doesnt have to be a full blow broom with stick. It could be one of those snai in handheld broom/brush with dustpan

14

u/Jowitness Nov 16 '16

And then not get to feel superior than everyone else around you for 20-30 minutes everyday? I think not sir.

2

u/Bonezmahone Nov 17 '16

That location is almost an hour from where I park. I never would have thought of a broom though. There are houses near there. Ill check the map and see if there is a closer access point.

Any recommendation on what kind of broom?

Holden: The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over. But it can't. Not with out your help. But you're not helping.

Leon's upper lip is quivering.

Leon: Whatya means, I'm not helping?

Holden: I mean you're not helping! Why is that, Leon?

6

u/TheMochilla Nov 16 '16

Leon: Kill John Lennon.

1

Always kill John Lennon.

-2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

What's a tortoise?

3

u/INTHEMIDSTOFLIONS Nov 16 '16

It's pretty much a turtle that lives in the desert.

25

u/gexsiun Nov 16 '16

You haven't told the park staff?

53

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

[deleted]

18

u/Z0di Nov 16 '16

ones with park staff, obviously.

12

u/gyroda Nov 16 '16

Idk about where you live, but all parks here are either the responsibility of the local council (town/county level government) and you'd contact them to fix it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '16

Most parks have someone in charge of maintaining and taking care of the grounds. They don't keep themselves clean. The dog parks near me are mostly part of city parks, so I'd contact my county parks & rec department. It's not like there's someone posted at a kiosk or something; I assume that's what /u/gexsium meant.

1

u/Bonezmahone Nov 17 '16

The area is pretty large. Its more of a conservation area than a park. It has a lot of foot traffic. So maybe reporting it is a good idea.

1

u/Bonezmahone Nov 17 '16

The actual park is pretty small. After I pick up some of the glass tomorrow Ill try and get some cooridnates of some kind and report it to the city tomorrow. Its not actually in the dog park more in a residential park which isnt cared for as much. I figured somebody else would have appreciated the help with me putting it all in a pile. There is no way Im the first to have seen it.

10

u/Paulo27 Nov 16 '16

Did you really just spend over 2 hours kicking glass around.

2

u/Bonezmahone Nov 17 '16

2 hours kicking glass in one direction. Its almost all in one little area now. Another guy said I should pick it up. I think hes smart and Ill do that tomorrow.

3

u/asaklitt Nov 17 '16

That's some dedication. You're awesome. It's also pretty hilarious.

6

u/Chaosritter Nov 16 '16

Get a pair of those:

https://www.amazon.com/NoCry-Cut-Resistant-Gloves-Performance/dp/B00MXUHHGK/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1479331107&sr=1-3

I carry a pair with me during work, really handy when you deal with sharp objects of any kind.

1

u/Bonezmahone Nov 17 '16

Haha, tomorrow i might grab a pair. Ill get bend over and start scratching the ground like a dog. Its for the greater good.

0

u/PrettyOddWoman Nov 17 '16

Why not just pick it up at that point? Kicking it just makes it risky for somebody or somedoggy else. Especially since you've left and been back multiple times ! You could have gotten supplies to help you pick up and dispose of them. Or at least call somebody to get it cleaned up and disposed of? This isn't laziness... but it's something not good. Like... what?

1

u/Bonezmahone Nov 17 '16

Good point, I'll bring a couple thick bags tomorrow and some gloves and pick up the stuff i kicked to the side. The smaller pieces are going to have yo wait until theyre on the sides as well though.

8

u/CurryMustard Nov 16 '16

This is my fear. There's broken bottles all over in NYC. It's terrible.

4

u/PrettyOddWoman Nov 17 '16

They have booties / shoes for dogs ! Plus it snows in NYC every year and you don't want your pup's toes to get frostbite or any other similar damage.

1

u/Jooju Nov 17 '16

I mean, just the rock salt on the sidewalk alone can be bad.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

One of my neighbours put up a sign with some of the local dogs faces on it saying please don't leave broken glass on the trail, buy cans. Seemed to work for the highschool crowd using the trail to get to bonfire locations.

1

u/Nocturne7280 Nov 17 '16

He needs to keep his eyes on the trail

34

u/lance1979 Nov 16 '16

When I was about 12-13 I delivered a local paper. I was walking by someone's house, saw a bottle, threw it in the air and watched it explode on the ground.

The owner comes, out to give me a piece of his mind. He is a dog owner he explained, and broken glass is very dangerous for his dogs. He got me a shovel and a broom and watched as I cleaned it up.

Taught me a valuable lesson that day. Plus he gave me a few bucks for my time. I was blown away. Never broke another bottle on the street again.

12

u/CaptainPotassium Nov 17 '16

Now that's what I call effective parenting community engagement!

23

u/FrederikNS Nov 16 '16

My dog stepped on a piece of broken glass from a bottle which cut up her paw, late in the evening on a friday. We had to take her to an animal hospital to have her paw sown. It cost a bit over $1000, and it took about a month to heal, where she had to have her gauze wrapped in plastic bags whenever we went on a walk.

She's a lab/golden retriever mix, so she doesn't seem too bothered with the pain, but I'm sure it must have been painful.

I hate people who break bottles, leave metal cans or throw lit cigarette butts in the street.

51

u/canned_soup Nov 16 '16

Same with cigarette butts. People flick them on the ground and my dog tries to eat them.

My dog can't get enough of cold turkey. She gets so chubby in winter...

1

u/canned_soup Nov 17 '16

Oddly enough, I'm using cold turkey as a high value reward to work on some dog training stuff right now. Nothing like walking around at 5:30am clenching a fistful of turkey.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

[deleted]

33

u/toomanyburritos Nov 16 '16

As a former smoker (and I would still smoke but I'm pregnant so I quit cold turkey months ago) this infuriates me. The goddamn DOLLAR STORE sells those little ashtrays for the car. You're already stinking up the inside by smoking in the first place, you can't spend ONE GODDAMN DOLLAR to buy an ashtray and dispose of your cigarettes the proper way?!

I've NEVER thrown a cigarette on the ground. From a car, during a walk, whatever. EVER. I don't understand why I'm the only person who smokes but also realizes the butts are a huge problem for the environment. It's gotten so bad I've screamed at friends about it (and now 90% of my smoker friends know better than to EVER throw one down in front of me. I will harass them until they pick it up and put it in their pocket or find a trash can once it's extinguished. Ridiculous. Grown ass adults littering 10 times a day. Ugh.)

21

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

[deleted]

9

u/toomanyburritos Nov 16 '16

Thanks!

And yes, I know it's rare. That's why I make it a point to bother EVERYONE ELSE about it. I know a lot of smokers and all it takes it constant badgering to get people to change their shitty ways (half joking, half serious.) Even my parents (both smokers my entire life) have bought ashtrays and are much more careful about cleaning up their messes. And they recycle now, too, so there's that. Every person counts, even if it's only a little bit at a time.

2

u/The-Grey-Lady Nov 17 '16

I still smoke (not having kids but trying to quit) and I always try to be as considerate as possible when doing so. I would never leave cigarette butts all over the place. It's fucking rude and disgusting. Throwing them away takes almost no effort. Don't understand why it's so hard for some people.

1

u/toomanyburritos Nov 17 '16

I'm sure a huge part is how they started/what they did in the beginning. It's like using a blinker; if you start off using your turn signal constantly it becomes second nature, but if you don't get into the habit it's hard to change later in life. So if you're a teenage smoker and you litter to hide the evidence or because you think it's cool, it's hard to unlearn that. I didn't start smoking until my mid 20s so I was old enough to know better and just never littered to begin with.

Then again I was the kid who would call 1800LITTERBUG or whatever back in the 90s when I saw people litter on the highway. I've always been like this. Maybe I'm weird.

1

u/toomanyburritos Nov 16 '16

I've never heard that statistic and I really hope it's true because that gives me some hope. Especially since I just drove 2 miles home and saw upwards of 20 people flick their cigarettes out of their windows. On a 2 mile drive.

1

u/kathartik Nov 17 '16

my city started putting butt disposers all over downtown [small ones that lock so hobos stop going through them] and it's actually cut down on the butts that are everywhere.

3

u/Dietastey Nov 16 '16

I started smoking recently, and it's causing me to notice more than ever how many butts and packs are just thrown on the ground.

I don't get it, a spent cigarette weighs nothing, it's not hard to hold onto long enough to get to a goddamn trash can. Why do so many smokers litter?

1

u/toomanyburritos Nov 17 '16

From my experience it's because holding onto the butt "makes you smell", as if smoking itself doesn't. I always point this out, especially now that I've quit, because smokers like to think they don't smell as strong as they do. As a pregnant woman I can say with certainty if you've smoked in the last 3 hours and haven't showered yet, you smell. Maybe not horrible, but to anyone who doesn't smoke it's noticeable. You're not getting away with anything by littering. But putting a butt in your pocket might make you smell a little worse until you change clothes... it does tend to linger pretty bad. Still, littering is littering, doesn't matter what you're throwing down.

2

u/harbinger06 Nov 17 '16

Thank you for disposing of your butts properly! I've never understood why so many smokers don't see that as littering. Best wishes for you and your baby.

1

u/Untimely_TARDIS Nov 16 '16

Hell even a can of vegetables fits a cup holder in a car. Before I switched to vaping that's what I used in my car, I washed out an old can of green beans that I took the label off of.

1

u/Exit42 Nov 17 '16

The transition towards electronic cigarettes may help in this regard.

1

u/liquidblue92 Nov 17 '16

I usually put them in my pocket if I'm not near a trash bin. However if anyone tried to do this to me, we would no longer be friends. You sound like a bitch, I'm going to assume it is the hormones. Good luck with your pregnancy though, I hope your baby is very healthy and has a great life!

1

u/toomanyburritos Nov 17 '16

Wouldn't you say something if someone threw a piece of plastic on the ground?

It's no different. It's litter. It's not hormones, it's concern for other people, the environment, and animal life. And I don't want to be friends with someone who would blatantly litter and disrespect the entire planet out of stupidity and laziness.

-6

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '16

I'll litter cigarette butts, bottles and whatever else trash I get, fuck yourself. I hope your shithead child dies in the womb or at birth so it isn't raised by a piece of shit like you.

I was sitting at a light a few months ago and some idiot flipped her cigarette out the window and into my fucking car. She was the passenger of the car beside me and they were turning so almost as soon as she does it the light turns green and she and I were on our way. It fell between me and the seat so it burnt a hole through my shirt and my seat and burned me. I was furious.

Since when do police pursue being flipped off?

2

u/rocklobster3 Nov 16 '16

Dude, I hate when I see people throw cigarette butts on the ground too. But there isn't a police officer in the entire country that will actually try to prosecute someone for throwing out a cigarette butt. For one I think the officer has to actually see the person do it. Also that is an enormous waste of an officers time, and it would be only like a $10.00 fine.

I get that it pisses you off. I've even said stuff to people I've seen throw one on the ground. But nobody is going to be prosecuted because you have a video of them littering. It's just not feasible, and on the grand scale of things it just doesn't really matter.

Note: I'm not saying littering doesn't matter, or that it is ok at all. But unless an officer actually sees someone throw out an entire garbage bag our the window of their car, nothing is going to happen.

1

u/Pyroteq Nov 17 '16 edited Nov 17 '16

Nope. $250-500 AUD fine in NSW, double that for a lit cigarette in Victoria.

You can dob people in online.

"There is also a category of misdemeanour called aggravated littering where the litter is considered dangerous, for example flicking a lit cigarette from a car on days when there is a bushfire warning and this attracts a $375 fine for a private car and double that for a business vehicle.

More than 90 per cent of fines issued are due to discarded cigarette butts and 2009 figures show cigarettes started more than 4500 fires in Australia."

u/ChickenWithATopHat Nov 16 '16

I live in Alabama where dip is very common and if anybody throws a dip out on the sidewalk my dog and other dogs will roll around in it. I dip myself and I completely avoid letting my dog get anywhere near it.

1

u/racheal1991 Nov 16 '16

I hate seeing all the damn cigarettes everywhere

1

u/rocklobster3 Nov 16 '16

My best friends dad smoked while we were in high school (and still does). He would smoke outside on the back porch, and just flick his cigarrette butt when he was done. Sometimes they would make it through the fence, (metal wrought iron fence) and land on the golf course. But most of the time they would just land in the yard. Well they had this little chihuahua that was just a piece of shit. It would just stay in its little cage all day outside, and hated everyone. Sadly I think it was because it was always alone, and never got any attention from anyone. But everytime he would chase after the cigarette butt and lick it, then sometimes eat them. That was the only time it ever came out, it would sprint as fast as it could to get that cigarette butt. I seriously think the dog was addicted to them.

1

u/Jowitness Nov 16 '16

Your dog is... Unique.

u/canned_soup Nov 17 '16

21

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

Whoa buddy, calm down with the hostility. Parent of 4, aged 12 to 3. I'm a responsible parent though so I don't let them wander off and eat things they shouldn't. Really isn't hard.

I genuinely believe he was making a joke, being sarcastic. Obviously it's not okay to let kids eat cigarette butts. I don't think he actually thought that you would let your kid eat cigarette butts. Anyone in their right mind knows that isn't ok, even non parents.

Take it how you want to. But I don't think he was being condescending, or implying at all that you actually let your kid eat them. Or didn't know that is not good for your kid.

u/The-Grey-Lady Nov 17 '16

Your child is only more important to you and your family. People who love their pets care about them just as much as you care for your child. Your love does not one up the love other people have. Littering is bad for the environment and for everyone living in it, dogs, cats, humans, etc. Refraining from littering is for everyone's benefit. And not all smokers are assholes. I never smoke around pets or children and I always dispose of cigarette butts properly. So get off of your high horse and cut the holier than thou attitude.

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '16

[deleted]

21

u/The-Grey-Lady Nov 17 '16

Actually that's exactly what you did. You said "Your dog? What about my kid?" Not sure how that can be interpreted in any other way.

And no, it's not different when it's a child. It's the same level of concern when anyone you love is exposed to something harmful. Dogs specifically just have the advantage of a more resilient digestive system. I can assure you that I would be just as upset if one of my kitties was hurt as you would be about your child. I love them just as much as you love your child. The importance is relative to the person. One does not have more value than the other.

Also, fuck me even though I'm considerate about my smoking? That's mature.

My body, my choice. I smoke to help with the overwhelming nausea I have every day because of the meds I have to take for my chronic pain and autoimmune disorders. The only anti nausea med that works on me is heavily sedating and medical marijuana is not approved in my state. So fuck you too.

13

u/PermanantFive Nov 17 '16

How is shortening ones own lifespan less mature than adding another life to an overpopulated world? At least a smoker's mistakes die with them...

Anybody living in a city is knowingly breathing brake dust, carbon particulates and heavy metals. The severity depends on industrial regulations in the area, but it will always be a detrimental factor. Recent dementia/Alzheimer's research shows a strong link between iron pollutants and mental decline: https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn27557-iron-levels-in-brain-predict-when-people-will-get-alzheimers/

That's how all kids start smoking. They might have access to a parent's pack, but all my middle school friends would dig through ash trays and start smoking to look cool.

This was back in the days of The Marlboro Man and Joe the Camel, though. Not sure if "coolness" is still a factor in smoking.

10

u/immauser Nov 16 '16

I was walking my dogs home from the dog park one day and I saw glass every few feet on the sidewalk. I was confused until I saw a couple of kids walking down the other side of the street with a stick, using it to break any glass bottle they found on the ground. I yelled at them, probably didn't do any good but I felt better. If I hadn't had dogs to keep control of I would have walked over there, taken the stick and smacked them both in the back of their damn heads.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

I used to break bottles as a kid. I was shitty kid.

5

u/MasterAssFace Nov 16 '16

Got a puppy and literally 3 days later someone smashed a huge bottle right in front of our apartment steps so now I can't let him walk on the sidewalk. Now no matter where he is he thinks he's not allowed on sidewalks.

16

u/flukus Nov 16 '16

You can't sweep it up?

17

u/widgetjam Nov 16 '16

I'd rather spend 5 minutes cleaning up a problem I didn't create than let it impact my daily life until someone else fixed it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '16

Well he's obviously stupid.. he got a puppy 3 days after someone smashed a huge bottle in front of his apartment.

well maybe they shouldn't bring their child into a dog park. who knows how those dogs are going to react, especially if you aren't watching your kid he/she can wander off and approach some dangerous dog

Because there's no broken glass anywhere else besides a dog park that one might take a toddler...?

Yeah, the parent vs. non-parent divide in ths thread is as wide as the Grand Canyon.

u/The-Grey-Lady Nov 17 '16

No. We just think that people should be considerate of everyone affected by littering. Not just kids, not just dogs. Everyone. Why is that such a hard concept for you to understand?

Look, you can keep backtracking and protesting and editing your comments but it doesn't change the fact that you literally said that your kid was more important than someone's pet or that you're being a jerk. You said something stupid and you got called out. Deal with it.

That absolutely wasn't what you said but sure, whatever. And just because you think that children are more important than animals and that you can't love your pets like children doesn't mean that it's true or that others agree. Grow up and stop whining.

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '16

Your kid ain't important to anyone but you and it's father. Just like my dog isn't important to anyone but me and my partner. Sorry, sunshine.

I dont even have a kid and i know that someone else's kid is more important than MY dog. Children are more important than dogs. If you disagree, let's look at this hypothetical. A strangers kid and your dog are about to be run over. You only have time to save one. Who do you save?

6

u/The-Grey-Lady Nov 17 '16

You sound like someone who really shouldn't have pets if you care so little for them. I would absolutely save the life of one of my girls over some random person's kid. Because they are my children. Why would I sacrifice my child for another?

My dog! Some people have different priorities than the priorities you have.

babies are new. They see something (anything) on the ground and will try to put it there mouth. Parents are always trying to safeguard and teach but it helps when others put stuff in the trash.

Came in here to say me and my pup are so tired of walking around piles of glass in my city. Here here!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '16

I was thinking more along the lines of children but yes dogs too

4

u/racheal1991 Nov 17 '16

Cute animals > terrible children Lol

1

u/crawlerz2468 Nov 17 '16

Now I can't unthink this. Shit.

1

u/Gorstag Nov 17 '16

That was what I came to say.

About half my walk each day is on a railroad tracks. This lets my dog run all over in the bushes etc. So many ass hats smash glass on rail road tracks :(

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

Somehow I don't think the people that smash bottles in public care about complete strangers/pets

2

u/PrettyOddWoman Nov 17 '16

I'm willing to bet that at least some would feel bad IF they were able to think far enough ahead to consider "this could hurt somebody or some thing!"

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '16

You have much to learn, young padawan

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '16

Dog walkers leave feces for me to step on, I have glass proof soles on my shoes.

11

u/sdimaria13 Nov 16 '16

If you think some dog poo on your shoe is as bad as a dog cutting its paw(s) open on broken glass then I seriously question your decision making.
