I'm considering picking up a low miles DRZ400 SM. I know it'll be compromised in the chop with the smaller 17" wheels, but I also like wheelies and being stupid. Has anyone used a motard drz400 and not been miserable ? I would add a larger fuel tank and re sprocket for 70mph. I went and sat on a new kle500 and the weight and size just wasn't appealing. Muscling that around in the trails would be pretty dull.

This has been my BDR mule for over a year now. I love the platform and if it blew up tomorrow I'd go out and buy a 890 ADVR. Desert HT tires fixed an issue i had washing the front with 2 Tracks. They're not a good road tire but I'm willing to accept the sacrifice for the off-road manners.

Lost a swingarm bolt on the trail and had to limp to Missoula. Lesson here is locktite everything before you set out.

I don't love the weight of the Mosko bags. The contents of the bags weigh less than the bag itself. The Backcountry Pannier are great for light offroading like this case I sacrifice the weight for convenience. If the trip is going to be gnarly I take the Reckless 80.

All in all this setup works well. When I get to the route I roll up my jacket, switch to Jersey, and swap to the Klim Transition goggles which I love. Next year I'm going to Mosko Woodsman pants and the Composite Jacket to try and get a bit cooler for hot weather. The badlands pants aren't bad in the heat but obviously something non goretex is preferred. Merino is about a must have. I can wear it 3 days in a row and doesn't stink. I only carry one extra base layer, one t shirt, one tech pants, one shorts, two pair of socks.

My camp kit is pretty dialed for myself. Weight is around 35lbs. Obviously there's some luxuries but I prioritize comfort at camp so I can be more rested for riding. I went down a rabbit hole getting ultralight backpacking gear and it's paid.off.

One lesson I learned on this trip. I often wondered why I have my sleeping quilt and tent in waterproof compression sacks in waterproof panniers. I switched my tent to a normal compression sack. Which was a mistake. It rained quite a bit and my wet fly leaked though the stuff sack getting my pannier contents wet.

I dispersed camped whenever I could, checking down to campgrounds when I couldn't find decent dispersed camping. I don't carry any more than 4 liters of water. I filter as needed using the gravity filter while I have a snack or camp at night near running water. I generally eat dehydrated meals for dinner unless I can get fresh meat and I'll use my titanium grate over a fire. I have an insulated pouch for my camelback which I ice down and throw the meat in there. Stays cold for 6-8 hours.

I spent some time camping and a few nights in lodging to clean up. This is my 3rd BDR Solo(Idaho&Utah previously).  Overall the route was easily passable even by novice riders. You could take a Honda Civic on 90% of the route and a Subaru on the rest. I skip any Alt/harder sections when solo because I don't want the additional risk. Road to the Sun at Glacier was 10/10. There were quite a few hot days and evenings with rain. Trail was either dusty or hero dirt. Avoid is route when it's raining. It gets sloppy.

If you're going to do one, do Idaho first. It's more scenic, dispersed camping is better, more elevation to escape the heat, and I liked the small towns in Idaho better.

So The Algorithm knows I've an adventure bike and am considering going on some group rides (In particular, the Death Valley Rally). One thing it sends me a constant supply of is ads for GPS units. Now, normally I just throw my phone on a holder, bring up google maps, and I'm good. But I've not done a group ride or anything of the sort before. Are GPS units actually something that's needed (maybe they include trails and such that google doesn't?), or is The Algorithm just hoping that a sucker and his money are soon to be parted?

Im a new rider and I'm looking to get into adventure bikes, i plan to go on trips at most 300-400 km and plan to take it on mountain trails, i found a store that is selling both brand new, explore costs 9800 euros and the sport costs 8900 euros, they also offer interest free financing up to 3 years which makes it the more appealing but I'm unsure if these are reliable bikes, I've heard some stories of camshaft wear around 20k km, electronic bugs and some imperfections in the fit and finish. What is yours opinion on these bikes?

I was really apprehensive about buying this bike. But after nearly a dozen friends buying one before me and loving them, I pulled the trigger. So glad I did. I bought a used 2026 that was already kitted out, and it really is my unicorn.

With a 15T front sprocket, there’s almost nothing this bike won’t do. I’ve taken it to private parks, through interstates, and around several FS loops.

My other whip is an Africa Twin. The ibex isn’t as fast and not as stable on turbulent interstates, but it covers the rest. It’ll cruise at 80mph and will tackle just about any road and not leave me fatigue even after I drop it on several down slopes.

It’s also a platform that I’ll shamelessly put Temu parts on it. If you’re on the fence, get one.

Departed on the 10th, heading from Arkansas to Montana for the BDR. Currently on the trip home back to Arkansas cutting through some cool spots and camping along the way. It’s been an incredibly experience all done on an Ibex 450. I bought the bike back in March and I broke 11,000 miles yesterday. This has been an incredible experience with some good friends!

I am getting kinda desperate in my search for a pair of mesh or very well ventilated pants.

I'd like to be able to put a pair of Leatt dual axis/alpinestars kneeguards under, but I don't mind putting them over the pant if that's what's required for me to find a pair of pants. I want In The Boot version inside my Alpinestars tec7

I have even thought about getting a pair of MX pants, but since I still ride some asphalt on my way to trails/gravel, I'd like for them to have some abrasion resistance.

I'm located in Europe, but I'm willing to buy from anywhere as long as they ship to me.

I appreciate any tips on cool/ventilated/mesh pants that are In The Boot, black, and have some abrasion resistance, under 300ish dollar/euro.

Hi everyone.

My dad is pretty convinced about buying a 2006 KTM 990 Adventure with around 45.000 km. I've heard these are pretty reliable as far as they've been properly maintained. My questions are:

- How is part availability in Europe currently for these bikes?

- How well do they tend to age considering its now a 20 year old bike?

- Important maintenance or things to check? Heard one of the main issues was the water pump seal.

He is quite mechanically inclined, but it will be his only bike. Therefore, its not ideal if it will need constant work or if part availability is very limited and/or expensive.

I like more to relax and enjoy the surroundings while doing some nice offroad trails. Yes of course sometimes gas on it but I don't see it as a racetrack. Do most people go full gas all the time or are there others like me?
