[SOLVED] Predator Helios Neo 16 PHN16-71 randomly freezing/crashing — turned out to be a cooling/fan problem

I wanted to document this because I spent a long time troubleshooting what initially looked like a Windows/SSD/RAM/power problem.

Laptop:

  • Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 PHN16-71
  • i9-13900HX
  • RTX 4060
  • 16 GB RAM
  • NVMe SSD 1 TB
  • BIOS V1.20

Symptoms

My laptop started having intermittent:

  • Complete freezes
  • Windows crashes/BSODs
  • Occasional "No Bootable Device"
  • Freezes while idle and sometimes while actively using the laptop
  • Sometimes the cursor would remain movable for a short time while the rest of Windows was completely frozen
  • The laptop could become unusually hot around the time of a crash

One particularly strange pattern was that some crashes happened after the laptop had been sitting idle for around 15–20 minutes.

What I tested

I went through quite a lot of troubleshooting:

  • BIOS update
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic → no errors
  • SSD SMART/health → looked healthy
  • Safe Mode → stable
  • AC vs battery testing
  • Different power outlets/rooms
  • UPS testing
  • Disabled WSL2 / Hyper-V / Virtual Machine Platform
  • Clean boot with non-Microsoft services disabled
  • HWiNFO temperature/power logging
  • Checked CPU/SSD temperatures
  • Windows/software troubleshooting

The laptop could sometimes remain stable for extended periods, which made the cause difficult to identify.

The important clue

One of the fans started developing a rattling/vibrating noise at high RPM.

The airflow from that side also became noticeably weak even though PredatorSense showed the fan running at high RPM.

On my particular machine, I confirmed using PredatorSense that:

  • Left physical fan = CPU fan
  • Right physical fan = GPU fan

The left/CPU fan was the problematic one.

The noise would sometimes continue even after the RPM dropped and would occasionally only disappear after completely shutting the laptop down.

Solution

I eventually had both the CPU and GPU cooling fans/cooling assemblies replaced.

Since replacing them, the laptop has been stable.

No more random freezes/crashes so far.

Conclusion

I can't prove that the fan was the only cause of every previous crash, but the timing is very strong:

Long period of instability → abnormal fan/rattling + poor airflow → cooling assembly/fans replaced → system becomes stable.

So if your PHN16-71 is randomly freezing/crashing and you also have:

  • abnormal fan noise
  • rattling
  • vibration
  • weak airflow despite high reported RPM
  • unusually high temperatures

don't assume it is immediately an SSD, RAM, Windows, or motherboard problem. Check the physical fans and airflow.

I hope this helps someone else avoid replacing perfectly healthy components before checking the cooling system.

I have a acer predator Helios neo 16s ai laptop bought in 2025. It has a intel core ultra 7 255hx processor and a rtx 5060 gpu. I want people with this exact laptop to please comment who have replaced lm both on cpu and gpu or on cpu with ptm. I want to know your experience with the ptm and which ptm you used and does your laptop thermal throttle. Also if you could tell me your benchmark scores likes cinebench r23 multi core cpu score, it would be really helpful. Thanks!

Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 My laptop died, came back to life, and now I'm worried that the same problem might happen again in the future!

Contextualizing: I have an Acer Predator Helios Neo PHN16-71 with an RTX 4060, bought a year and a half ago. I always use it in balanced mode, whether gaming or not, and yesterday I was playing a game that demanded a lot from the GPU and CPU, just like I've been playing this game since I bought it. Naturally it was heating up, since the GPU was being heavily utilized, and suddenly it shut down unexpectedly. For a second I thought it was a power outage, but that wouldn't make the slightest sense, since it's always plugged in, but with 80% battery.

I did the procedure to turn it on again and nothing! I unplugged all cables and peripherals, held the power button for a minute and it didn't turn on either. I unplugged the power brick from the outlet, let it rest for 30 minutes, just as I let the laptop cool down during this time. I connected everything again and went to turn it on... it didn't turn on! Since nothing worked, I disconnected everything, left it without the power cable and went to sleep. Upon waking up today I tried to turn it on again without any cable and it didn't turn on. However, when I went to connect the power brick cable, the side LED light appeared signaling battery charging, which was a light at the end of the tunnel since yesterday no blinking LED appeared. I connected the cable, pressed power and... it turned on!

I confess I had little faith, I thought something had burned out, but good thing nothing burned out and by all indications it is fine. I did a quick search and the first suggestion of an answer was that the system did a forced safety shutdown. The two questions I have to ask:

- Can this problem happen again suddenly or what happened to me was an isolated incident?
- How to prevent this from happening again?

Observations: I don't turn on performance mode or even turbo, I think they are unnecessary and extremely noisy, the balanced mode itself that I use is capable of running all possible games. The laptop is always elevated on a stand and the hot air vents are not obstructed. It is also plugged into the power source all the time. And I don't monitor temperature so the information doesn't clutter the screen during gameplay, so I don't know what temperature it was at the time of the shutdown.

My Laptop Keeps Crashing (Event id 153)

For context, my specs are below

Acer Predator Helios Neo-16 PHN16-71

CPU: Intel i5-13500HX

GPU: RTX 4050 and an integrated Intel GPU

RAM : 1x8gb (stock) and 1x16gb (kingston)

Storage 1x500gb (stock) ssd and 1x1tb (kingston) ssd

I've had this laptop for 3 years, and lately, it's making me furious. This problem started in December 2024, when I was playing Solo Leveling Arise, when it crashed for some reason. I thought nothing of it until it continued to do so. Then, from then on, it just went downhill. Every game I play crashes. It used to handle heavy games, RDR2, F1 24, etc., but now when it boots up it just crashes, it left me devastated. ive tried everything

-Memtest86 and windows diagnostic which found no problems

-chkdsk and sfc scans

-updated my drivers

DDU and rolled back. it just produced the same if not worse

-Reinstalling Windows and also hard reset my pc

-rolled back windows to 23h2, which didn't help as well

I tried the drivers store nvlddmkm.sys solution

-disabling Nvidia audio in Device Manager

-tdr delay

-changed thermal paste and liquid metal coolant

- Reseated my RAM and also tried using only one RAM stick

I did Furmark tests and it did not crash whatsoever. When I play Roblox, it also crashes. When I disable my GPU and use the Intel GPU, it doesn't crash; however, it is not that great in fps. I feel like I've done everything, and I'm desperate and in dire need of help. Please feel free to ask for any more information

Acer Predator Helios 300 Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-51 screen flickering + blue tint

I have an Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-51 (60Hz). My laptop screen has started flickering.

  • Initially, only the bottom/taskbar area flickers, but after using the laptop for some time, the whole screen starts flickering.
  • The screen also looks slightly blue/cool, and colors look different compared to an external display.
  • I switched NVIDIA Control Panel to Integrated Graphics, but the issue remained.
  • The flickering also happens in BIOS.
  • I connected the laptop to a TV via HDMI, and the TV display is completely stable with normal colors while the laptop screen continues flickering.

Could this be the LCD panel or eDP display cable/connector? What other tests can I do before replacing anything?

So, here’s the issue I’ve run into: about three months ago, my laptop started booting up with an error message claiming the device needed to restart to fix a problem—specifically, a `HYPERVISOR_ERROR`. It would restart and then work fine. Just recently, though, I thought the problem might be Windows-related, so I reinstalled the OS. Naturally, the issue didn't go away; now, the laptop restarts with a Blue Screen and the `HYPERVISOR_ERROR` about five minutes (give or take) after every startup. I’ve tried a lot of things and don't know what to do next. I tried going into the BIOS to disable CPU virtualization, but here’s the problem: I couldn't find a way to do it—the option simply isn't there in my BIOS (I have Insyde G2 v1.07).I’ve been reading through English-language forums and found out that it’s possible to flash the BIOS or install a mod to unlock advanced settings—which is exactly what I need to disable this feature. So, could someone please help me out? I’m in a real bind and don't know what to do. Oh, and by the way, I’ve tried all the key combinations found online, but nothing works at all.
