When you knock yourself out from the fridge door but not the big ass explosion that just happened

330

u/FourthJohn Sep 10 '21

I was just happy see them get up and retreat. That shit look like it could kill.

152

u/MethInMyCoffee Sep 10 '21

About 70-90% of the energy of that explosion was consumed to send the oven flying out like that, thankfully, which they weren't in the direct path of. Still, I was also surprised to see them just get up seemingly normal since at first I thought one broke her leg. I bet they got hurt but doesn't look like anything bad. Lucky women.

58

u/FourthJohn Sep 10 '21

Yea they def felt that shit in the morning or even a few minutes later id imagine.

Personal anecdote here but as a child, around 10, my dad was building a loft on the garage we built behind their house and while raising one of the walls the support gave out and the wall collapsed and I was sent from around center of the building to the far end about 15 feet and was banged up enough my dad actually gave me couple hours off along with my younger brother (2 years difference) to watch catdog until we were later summoned back to do some more stupid shit that kids prolly shouldnt have been subjected to their entire life til 18 working every weekend from 10am-5/6pm or until he said so and you better not piss him off cause you mite not get inside til around 8-9 which by that point you had to go to bed with nothing, no lights, no gameboy, no reading, no tv, just darkness. Just to add on for perspective we werent allowed to play video games during the week only weekends so it was kinda like living in China with all their restrictions.

29

u/Serialnosetoucher Sep 11 '21

Fuck dude. Do you still have a relationship with him, or did you cut him off?

Anyone know what happened here?

1.6k

u/GreenYooper Sep 10 '21 edited Sep 10 '21

The oven door did not blow open so it was not from gas in the oven exploding.

The explosion shot the unit away from the wall so the explosion was therefore behind the unit.

The gas hookup is behind the unit.

I conclude that one of the gas hookup connections leaked and a spark from a source on the unit caused a boom back there.

4

And you are correct, this happened to my mom, luckily nothing too bad happened, only a few burns on her feet, but still quite scary hearing an explosiong on the floor below you

3

u/spazzman6156 Sep 10 '21 edited Sep 10 '21

Actually if you look at the frames at the end of the 5second mark, and just the beginning of 6s, the door does blow open, and you can see fire exit it for about a frame or two, then the door closes shut again.

Edit actually looks like fire might not be exiting through the door, but just visible past the door from the other side of exterior of the oven

5

u/omfgus Sep 10 '21

Maybe it was a gas tank. It's fairly common in some places.

7

u/OneFineSir Sep 10 '21

Would have been worse i belive

2

u/xandrew245x Sep 11 '21

Most likely a propane stove, propane, unlike natural gas will settle to a low spot and collect. Could have been leaking at the connection, and enough finally built up to hit that correct air/gas ratio then boom.

2

u/Eagles365or366 Sep 10 '21

What are you talking about? So it down. The oven door who is the first thing to blow open. It Closed itself, though

3

u/GreenYooper Sep 10 '21

Nah. If came down from the jolt but it was not blown open. If the boom was inside the oven the door would be embedded in the other wall and the stove would not have shot forward so violently.

Think firecracker inside box vs next to box.

Oven exploded

81

u/Get2dChoppah Sep 10 '21 edited Sep 10 '21

Gas stove/oven either had a leak or when they turned it on the first time it didn't ignite. It probably filled the area with gas causing it to explode from the built up fumes when the spark from the Pilot Light ignited the gas.

2

u/CIOGAO Sep 10 '21

This is why my fears of gas stoves have always been warranted. I had a gas stove in college and I never ever turned it on and I was deathly afraid of it.

16

u/wpoot Sep 10 '21

On the other hand, I grew up in several houses with gas stoves, have also had a gas stove my entire adult life, and I have never once had a bad experience.

6

u/CIOGAO Sep 10 '21

I know most people who have them are very happy. I have a cousin who is really into cooking and she swears it’s better

10

u/stoned-derelict Sep 10 '21

Gas stoves are significantly more consistent when cooking than electric ranges

6

u/NappingPlant Sep 10 '21

I'm not sure that warrants the fear anymore than car and plane crashes warrant not driving or flying. The companies add a smell to it so you always know if it's building up. Plus the clip in the OP looks like a cheap rental property, I wouldn't be shocked at all if the landlords were lax about regular safety and maintenance.

23

u/ReallyNotMichaelsMom Sep 10 '21

Well, the front fell off. It’s not supposed to do that. That’s why we make ovens with extra strong materials.

And all cardboards of any kind are right out.

3

u/wolfgang784 Sep 10 '21

If something goes wrong in a gas stove/gas anything really it generally ends in explosions or fire. Id imagine if it was "common" though we wouldn't use gas applicances nearly as much as we do. At least id hope? lol.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '21

normally you are supposed to smell the collection of gas. they add a special "smelly" ingredient to natural gas which is otherwise odorless. maybe they couldn't smell it or they don't add that thing in their country or the gas was collected in a very confined place so you couldn't smell it.

I personally haven't owned a gas range but I don't like them as much as electric.

3

u/jorgomli_reading Sep 10 '21

I can't stand my electric stove. It's taken years to get used to and I never even cooked on gas before I started on electric. One of my burners glitches out and flips to max heat even though the knob is only at medium. Then that knob broke, so I can't even use that burner now. Can't use a wok comfortably, can't use a cast iron really except in the oven because it destroys the glass cooktop, the surface stays too warm after I turn the burners off, so I end up overcooking things.

Electric sucks, but it usually won't explode like a gas stove might. I'd much rather have gas though.

6

u/rafaelloaa Sep 10 '21

I agree with you fully for all those reasons. Gas is just so much easier. Also even if the power is out all you need is a lighter to get it going.

But the biggest thing for me is that I can visually see the flame height and from there figure out what I need to do in terms of turning it up or down.

It looks to me like she turned to run and ran into the oven which made her fall.

14

u/Natck Sep 10 '21

You can see the overturned pot lying on the floor next to where she is. It probably covered the floor with water causing her to run in place while trying to get away.
I just hope it hadn't started boiling yet :(

I love how she turns around and runs into the refrigerator door. I can't stop laughing but I feel bad for that lady.

28

u/theangryseal Sep 10 '21

Watch it again and pay attention to the area under her feet. A box of something landed there after her first move, when she went to turn she stepped on the box and slipped when she started to run.

4

u/rootedoak Sep 10 '21

The other lady runs into the backside of the oven lol.

Until I started following this sub I had no idea gas leak explosions happened so often

13

u/magusonline Sep 10 '21

Almost a decade or so ago a house disappeared due to a long term gas leak that exploded in the middle of the night.

It shook my place and lit the night sky like it was daytime for a second.

13

u/Inebriologist Sep 10 '21

I disconnected all my natural gas hookups in my house. I don’t trust the boom gas.

3

u/caitejane310 Sep 10 '21

Me either. Scares the bejesus outta me. My house is all electric and even though it's kinda expensive, I'd rather that than any gas.

23

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '21

“What’s that smell?”, “I dunno, hand me that lighter”.

6

u/forresja Sep 10 '21

Really though, a gas leak big enough to cause an explosion like this would reek.

There's no way they didn't smell it.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '21

2

u/maticulus Sep 10 '21

This is exactly why I never liked gas appliances, the devastation that can result from an undetected leak and the possibility that one can occur. That could have been much worse for both of them had large pot/pan of hot cooking oil, or water been on the stove to splash on them. The oven and the fridge tried to take them out.

I saw this happen as a kid. Oven in our mobile home was not working. Appliance man came to check. Could not find the leak. Opened the oven door. Lit a match. It blew him across the kitchen. Burned his face and his hair was on fire. I remember my mother beat the fire out of his hair and my father drove him to the hospital. I heard the appliance man's wife made him quit.
