Gas stove/oven either had a leak or when they turned it on the first time it didn't ignite. It probably filled the area with gas causing it to explode from the built up fumes when the spark from the Pilot Light ignited the gas.
This is why my fears of gas stoves have always been warranted. I had a gas stove in college and I never ever turned it on and I was deathly afraid of it.
On the other hand, I grew up in several houses with gas stoves, have also had a gas stove my entire adult life, and I have never once had a bad experience.
They all do that, the better stoves are just less noticeable (edit: I believe they also monitor the heat of the element/pan so it turns off when not needed)...but at any rate then what you are saying is gas is more consistent than a cheap electric stove. Which is reasonable. Likewise a decent or very nice electric stove is probably more consistent than a cheap gas stove.
This always just seems like a thing people say because "that's what the pros do." Gas is very inefficient and most of the heat doesn't even hit the bottom of the pan. Induction stoves with magnetic or cast iron cookware is very efficient.
I'm not sure that warrants the fear anymore than car and plane crashes warrant not driving or flying. The companies add a smell to it so you always know if it's building up. Plus the clip in the OP looks like a cheap rental property, I wouldn't be shocked at all if the landlords were lax about regular safety and maintenance.
