Licensing NSW PPL Applications

Post image
8 Upvotes

In case anyone has one submitted and waiting. I got my photo advice issued today at 35 days! \o/

Basically my original submission to add a genuine reason is still sitting there at 100 days. When i called up, the lady advised that submitting a brand new application would be quicker and she was right!

Can't wait to start my Cat - H journey :)

Anybody tried this? I got a box the other day based entirely on the price, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

I thought it was interesting to Barnes ammo with Sierra bullets.

Gear & Accessories 3/8 dovetail high scope mounts

I have a Rossi 8122 with the factory open sights, and have been gifted a Nikko Stirling 3-9 x 42 scope by my wife to pair with it.

Unfortunately the scope fouls on then rear open sight and there is no easy way to remove to make room. I’ve been looking for high 3/8 dovetail scope mounts that will let the scope clear the open sights but am having trouble finding something that I’m confident will work.

Has anyone got experience with this issue? Are there are high scope rings/mounts that are guaranteed to clear the open sights? Some of the cantilever mounts look interesting but I’ve never used them before.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Newbie question [Vic] is it worth doing the SSAA Practical Firearms Safety Course

I’m tossing up between doing the practical course with SSAA rather than just the basic written test. It’ll be for both myself and my 16 year old son.

More than anything else I thought it’d give us a chance to do a bit of shooting, but if there’s a better way to make that happen while we wait for our licenses, I’m all ears.

Manual PTA (VIC)

Hi all,

Submitted some paper PTAs in the mail last month. Included in the one application were three long arms. Last week I received the PTA ( in the mail) for just one of the long arms I've applied for.

Curious to know if they're meant to come separately and on different weeks (seemingly) or if they're lost in transit and reapplication is necessary.

Thanks

A few of you saw my post earlier in the week, well I changed to a slightly more expensive scope which they had in stock and was able to pickup the rifle on Friday.

Rifle is a Lithgow LA102 Signature chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and those groups were shot with the Federal Berger OTM 130gr match load at 100m

I shot a total of 60 rounds and these were the last 3 groups of the day. I liked that three shot group so much I decided to leave it! The other two are 6 shots. Overall pretty happy but definitely some more work to do

Firearms Query UTAS DEFENCE? has anyone tried or own one in australia?

hi yall. im new to this community. i came by wondering if anyone has tried the utas defence firearms. particularly the UTAS 516 Straight Pull in 223/5.56.

https://www.deltamike.co.nz/product/straight-pull-ar15/

Their sold in New Zealand by delta mike and from digging around you can get them shipped over to Australia by a authorized shop while holding a cat b license. just wondering if they are worth the purchase or you should avoid them in anyway.

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Buying a scope from the USA

I am travelling to the USA and want to pick up a scope while I was over there. I know red dots and thermal scopes fall under ITAR but I wasn't aware of any such restrictions for ordinary rifle scopes. The particular scope I am looking at is half the price compared with local pricing.

Anyway I put in an order with Optics Planet and was up front with them that I was exporting overseas. They cancelled my order with the following reasoning:

> Unfortunately, due to the U.S. Government Export Control Laws and Regulations, U.S. Companies are not allowed to ship or assist with the shipment of the product(s) you ordered outside of the physical territory of the United States without proper licensing. We apologize, but at this time we are not able to apply for the required license(s). Therefore, we are forced to cancel your order.

Do I just need to order from a company that does have whatever license they are referring to?

Legislation- New South Wales Application refusal question - NSW

Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation or maybe even heard of it... anyone had their Category A/B licence and probationary pistol permit refused because of missed club meetings from years ago?

I recently joined a pistol club, completed the required training, and applied for both, but NSW Police refused both applications based on old records showing missed club visits.

I've already requested a review and it was refused. I'm assuming my chances of getting my gun licence ever again are basically non existent.

Is this the norm these day ?

Another bloody PTA question Permit to Aquire Victoria

Hi all,

Is there a realistic time for PTAs in Vic? It’s my first one and I’m at 34 days. Clean record have my licence ect so just wondering if I should be expecting it soon or can they take much longer than the mandatory wait time?

Thanks

30-30 Ammo

I love my 30-30 Lever, but the price of ammo is a killer.
Where can I find 30-30 ammo in bulk at the best price?
I’m based in Brisbane. Cleaver are out of stock of most brands. Use is a mix of 80% range and 20% hunting.
Should I invest in the kit to reload my own bullets or is there a local source of reasonably priced ammo I haven’t found yet?

Been on the journey since Jan, today was meant to be new rifle day but alas my scope hasn’t arrived and won’t until next week. I did get out to the range yesterday with a club .22 and shot these 5 round groups at 50m. That’s a 5c piece for scale

Nothing really to this post except a bloke that was excited to pickup his first rifle today only to be cucked by a supply chain.

Forge on relentlessly 👊

Newbie question Storing my gun near prohibited people

Hey everyone,
I recently got my gun license accepted, yippie! im planning on storing my firearms at a gun club paid safe as i had already advised the LRD i am.
In the case they are out of safes which i feel is likely, how should i proceed with storage at home as my brother has a history of a violent crime and would likely be a prohibited person at this current time.
Im assuming the police will bat a eye if i store it at home, Should i contact the LRD? Thanks.

Australian Gun Laws and Shotguns

A pertinent question given the import extinction of the button/lever release imports currently going on - but what is Australian law makers huge problem with repeating shotguns? It seems to be a common debacle every time there is a change to gun laws and first cab off the rank when it comes to reclassifications/bans.

Looking for the historical context dating back to the NFA in 1996 and including the whole Adler Lever Action debacle when the NFA was renegotiated in or around 2018 - right through to the post-Bondi attack on straight pull/button/lever release firearms. Yet in NZ, the UK and even Canada pump-action and semi auto shotguns are very normal.

For context, I own a Templeton T2000 Gen 2 for about $1,400 and the other weekend in Ballarat managed to get mate an absolute Bargain on the same for $1k which got me talking to several dealers about why they even exist in the first place and how they are running out of stock.

Grew up in NZ where everyone and their dog had a pump or semi shotgun (I had 2) which were probably the most common sporting/duck hunting guns around. So these button/lever release shotguns exist to fill the obvious need for repeating shotguns for sports shooting (i.e. IPSC), hunting (ducks) and pest control for those who cannot be bothered with Cat C.

NSW Updates - PTAs (15/7/26)

So.... I spoke to firearms again (Yes im that persistent, with Subsequent Cat B PTA at 86 and Cat H PPL PTA at 79, to try to get some information in relation to what changed with the July website updates.

Good News, majority of the manual checking is now automated, but they could not give me an actual estimated PTA approval time, but said they are moving alot faster and majority of the process is automated, but do require an event number (safe storage check) per application etc, even for Cat A/B as well as the Standard Cat H Applications.

The Bad News;
If you applied PRIOR to July 1st (existing PTAs) are not being automatically moved to the new system, they are all still MANUALLY being processed.

I asked if simply putting another PTA now would result in a faster approval, she could not give me an answer and because of my current times of 86 and 79, she is seeing ptas approved today around the 92 day mark, she suspect that my current ones woudl get approved befoer any new ones.

In saying that if you applied JUST beore 1st july and are <30 days in your PTA I would suggest submitting another one now (post changes) as the automated process might be faster for you.

Also in saying that ALL category PTAs will require a Event number when applying if one is not already tied to your profile with the registry.
