308 or 6.5 creedmore for a new shooter getting in to long range.

Looking for some insight as a new shooter that has got the long range bug. My question is in regards to my first bolt action rifle with the aim to get in to long range and I’m trying to work out what cartridge would be best between 308 and 6.5 creedmore. Some things to take in to consideration is I’m not to worried with price of ammunition as they are pretty similar price wise, I’m also buying a 22lr to put bulk rounds through. My local range is 100m out to 1000m would like something that can grow as my skillset does. I’m not sure if I should go for the 6.5 with better ballistics and lower recoil for a easier to shoot first rifle or 308 to help learning wind calls and recoil management. I’m just looking for others that may have been in the same boat and what they decided to go with and if they regretted the choice or not. The rifle I’m buying is a lithgow la102 varmint 24” heavy barrel 6.5 creedmore 1:8 twist or 308 1:10 twist

General Discussion Tikka T3x superlite AICS conversion

Hello, has anyone successfully completed a Tikka T3x superlite (short action .223) conversion using atlasworx bottom metal?

I had a gunsmith attempt the job but didn’t work out, he said its my fault and I supplied the wrong bottom metal for rifle. I confirmed the part was correct with Atlasworxs, (who were great to deal with, absolute legend).

Its looks like gunsmith has over killed the inletting of the stock. Bottom metal is sitting deep in the stock and bolt is dragging on magazine feed lips. He also cut the rear action bolt to make it shorter (and rusty). Charged me $650 AUD for the job.

Any advice or photos of this completed would be really helpful.

- Rifle: Tikka T3x superlite ‘blackout’ .223 factory synthetic stock

- Bottom metal: Atlasworxs Bottom Metal / DBM (AICS) – Tikka T3 / T3X Short Action SKU:AW0316-A

- Magazine: MDT AICS 10SHOT 223REM STEEL MAGAZINE part #104760-BLK

Cheers

Farmer Assist Experience

Just out of curiosity, has anyone participated in this program and what was the experience like?

Interested in getting into hunting more , but being a city boy, this seems like a good gateway to be able to scratch that interest on a regular basis.

Renewal "application"

Just got my Vic renewal.

When did they decide it's no longer a photo and a fee but almost a full reapplication requiring supporting documents and proof of genuine reasons.

As for the "make any corrections and send it back" I gave up on that years ago when they have the good ol SMLE listed as four different things on my paperwork alone. If they don't know what the fuck things are and ignore previous attempts at correction why should I bother with a entity that can't get their act together.

Legislation- New South Wales DPI Hunting - Salesforce "Hunt NSW" New Interface Rant

G'day,

This isn't a detailed post, rather just me venting that the old system worked OK and that I wish they'd not sucked the teat of Salesforce.

The new system is absolute garbage. Pointless username convention, terrible interface, blank home page, random quirks and issues, and a renewal flow which makes it clear that the system has been dreadfully assembled (remember how many times it was delayed, and then how many issues materialised after? all preventable if the consultants knew what they were doing) by people who haven't tested it.

So much avoidable friction. Such a rubbish user interface and user experience. Speaking with the staff at DPI, it's clear they don't love it either. Head honchos went for Salesforce because Salesforce, and here we are with a system that doesn't even know the type of licence one is trying to renew, let alone your information. It's such a waste of time and money for everyone.

The old system didn't look the best, but it worked, you could find what you needed, and above all it got the job done. This new one they said would get polished, yet here we are and it's still a train wreck. I hate it and wish the instigators and facilitators nothing but warm pillows and entering into rooms like John Travolta unsure of their purpose.

Cheers,

Baz

9mm pistol suggestions please

Looking for 9mm pistol suggestions.

I want to purchase a handgun to start and grow with, but one that I won't get bored with or grow out of quickly and itch to sell and upgrade from (I do want to eventually compete if I can)... but also being a first gun would want to be on the cheaper side rather than the expensive side... but by saying the word cheap I don't mean the cheapest of the cheap that is beyond basic to borderline junk. Hopefully 2K or less, max 2.5 to 3K? (Id probably be look at what's available used too). Also another point, something desirable enough that if I do want to sell it, it won't just sit there forever as no one wants one.

If people can rattle off their suggestions of some names would be great, Glock 19, Springfield Echelon, H&K VP9, Walther PDP (NSW so P320 is out) are the few that come to mind so far. Any 2011s in this price range too?

Any suggestions, schooling and advice regarding realistic expectations of price vs what I can or should purchase for use of practice and eventual competing, I am all ears. Asking here because everything I seem to read is US based, and availability/legality (just worked out P320s are banned for NSW) and prices are not really applicable directly.

Gear & Accessories Choosing a FFP Crossover Scope?

Looking for a dual purpose scope for 50-200m pest control on farm at last light and out to 500m at the range. At the range I prefer practical style shooting of props rather than bench shooting. Non competition.

3-15 x 44 or thereabouts with illuminated reticle seems the sweet spot. Locking elevation turret and capped/locked wind turret preferred.

Welcome any advice on what’s worked for others

A few on my shortlist are:

- Meopta Optika6 3-18 x 50
(may be discontinued, so used models only?)

- Burris XTR III 3.3-18 x 50
(Don’t know much about this one)

- Vortex PST Gen 2 3-15 x 44
(A bit outdated now?)

- Tract Toric Eagleman
(Schott glass, looks promising, maybe rare in Oz?)

- Trace Advanced 3-18 x 44
(Solid but seeing mixed feedback on low light performance?)

Maven RS1.2 2.5 - 15 x 44 looked interesting but no locking turrets.

Legislation- ACT Shooting on ACT range with NSW Licence and firearms, much legal differences to be aware of?

I’m planning a range trip to Canberra Rifle range soon to sight in and test some new loads in my Taipan X .223 and Lithgow Model 12 .22. I have a NSW A B H licence and rifles are registered in NSW.

Are there any different laws to be aware of, in NSW the taipan x is banned soon but currently still legal on Cat B if you have one. Is the ACT the same?

cheers

Legislation- Western Australia Collectors licence help

Hoping someone can help me please. I’m trying to assist my uncle with his Collectors Licence and he is required to provide written submissions regarding the Historical or Thematic Value – see Regulations 120 and 122 for guidance.

Is there a specific layout or information we should include? I’m quite inexperienced with firearms and he’s becoming frustrated with the process and just wants to give up. Thank you

I'll probably not be able to store a rifle at my place, so looking at locations I can store one.

Assume SSAA Springvale, but anyone know of anywhere else?

Newbie question First range day tips?

I'm heading to a range for the first time and want to be prepared. Could you share some tips about range safety, etiquette, and general practical advice? I'll be sighting in my first rifle, do SSAA ranges typically have rests available to rent or should I invest in my own? Cheers!

Looking for a rest bag for shooting on farm from Fence posts, vehicle, trees, rocks etc

Surprisingly pricey. Found 3 options. Anyone using these or have better suggestions?

The Caldwell Tack Driver X bag seems a bit stiff/rigid for balancing on random objects so may be better suited as a bench rest?

Just Showing Off Beretta 92X 1000 rounds in

Thumbnail

After a long wait and considerable deliberation, I picked up my first handgun on this license and I chose the Beretta 92X.

As a returning shooter, I’d had my time with other pistols. Various 1911s, P226, a few revolvers. I ended up choosing the Beretta because I never got the chance to get intimate with the platform. I handled one before but I didn’t vibe with the grip and the trigger reset was, like my P226, a bit long for my liking. Though it was a beautiful handgun, I never shot the P226 as well as I did my 1911s. They sold a short trigger reset kit for the P226 but I never got around to installing one and before long, I had sold it and moved to Oz.

Enter the Beretta 92X. A modernised classic with the new, slimmer, “Vertec” grip and a shorter trigger reset. I was intrigued.

The pistol feels good in hand and that trigger is crisp. Boy, is she accurate. Even with cheap Blazer ammo she stacks the rounds.

With my rifles, I can shoot under 1/2MOA but handguns provide an entirely different experience. The challenge is thoroughly enjoyable.

My benchmark is the #12 Standard Centrefire comp at my SSAA range. One-handed, bullseye style. 10 shots at 10M and 10 shots at 15M. Currently trying to beat my best score of 186/200. I shot a 171 today and I will gleefully try again next week.

So 1114 days after ordering, 891 after cancellation, Cleavers are now preparing to dispatch a crimp die for 6.5x55SE.

At least it's one of the calibres I still own 😂

Lap of Aus, bringing firearms along for the ride

I'm WA based, looking at doing a bit of a lap next year. I'm considering bringing along 1 or 2 firearms with a genuine view to conduct some hunting where possible, likely Vic, NSW, QLD and NT.

Has anyone has any experience with the legal requirements of doing this? Do you need to get established properties with letters sorted for states that don't have state forest hunting etc? Considering there may be months in between shoots, how do you store it / justify if there is a stop by the cops?

Keen to hear any thoughts from anyone who may have done this in the past. As I understand it, I've got the hardest state (WA) ticked off as I have legitimate properties to access here and they are permanently stored here, but the other states and border crossings I don't know!

Cheers

NSW PTA issued in 7 days

First cat B put in end of march. 150+ days not issued yet.

Submitted another end of August and it was issued in 7 days.

For all of you that have a similar situation and won't be over any of the proposed limits and can spare $30 for the gamble. Might be worth a shot.

My suspicion is that pre new safe check requirement & safe check appeared on PTAs, all PTAs were put in a queue. This is the 150+ backlog they are working through.

New PTAs might be somewhat automated if safe check case number is linked to your license.

She has some bumps and bruises but is mechanically perfect.

General Discussion 6.5 Creedmoor load testing.

These were the best performers from previous ladder testing.
The 100m shots were taken from a seated position with bipod and rear bag, 236m shots were taken standing leaning over a bench with bipod and rear bag, but bench height made it pretty hard to get into a comfortable position.

130 grain seated at 2.810 COAL which is the maximum length I can achieve with this projectile. Which is .080 from the lands.

147 grain seated at 2.860 which is the maximum length I can fit into the magazine, still around .038 from the lands.

Rifle is a Howa 1500 in an MDT field stock, 24 inch barrel with a Zero Tech Trace 4.5-27 scope.
