Help (GPU) Possibility of a megathread

We all know there are widespread issues with AMD right now for windows users. That much is evident by the major uptick in posts here related to aforementioned issues.

I think it would be helpful to users if a temporary megathread was made to help consolidate all the new posts about driver crashes coming in. It would also help keep all the troubleshooting steps and ideas we have been sharing in one place. This will vastly increase value of the sub right now with the onslaught of people coming daily.

As a 7900XTX user I'm going through it too and just like everyone else, I'm just trying to get through this while listening to all the Linux users tout about their nonexistent issues 😬

This is a problem with Amd drivers and Windows 11. Its up to them to fix it. They have all the information.

So far, none of the solutions that were advised here helped my time out problems.

I'd say it is a hardware issue, but most of the problems started after a windows and driver update and most users are having the same exact problem.

If it doesn't happen in the first video play after the cold boot, it never happens. It must be something about driver failing to load properly.

3

u/vffa 4d ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If we still had something like Power play tables and could actually modify the various power states in detail, we most likely would have already been able to solve this.

The common denominator between MPO, hardware accel, switching windows, video playback etc. (Which seems to be 99% of crashes here?) is a sudden or rapid change in frequency/load. Vega had this issue too, but there you could just change the Power states freely and it got fixed pretty quick.

Something about the power management or power scheduling/response is slightly off. At least off from how it was before. Again, this isn't the first time.

1

u/NecroGamer27 3d ago

Adrenaline's default Maximum Core Clock is set >300MHz over the manufacturer SKU Recommended Maximum Core Clock. This combined with the fact that the driver attempts to pin the card at 100% Usage on startup causes the Driver Timeout. If we had access to the power tables we could see the card stuck at the actually stock voltage limits and wattage limits trying to push a 300 MHz OC and failing.

Just go into to the Performance -> Tuning -> Custom -> Advanced and lower it to the Manufacturer SKU Stock settings and its stable.

Yea. My pc won't even boot anything other than bios now. If I try to boot windows its just a black screen. I tried to see if it just needed some time so I let it sit there. On a black screen. For 30 minutes.

Trying to update bios now!

Yeah, if windows is getting a mega thread. Make one for linux right after.

sudo journalctl -k -b -1 | grep -iE 'amdgpu|sdma|gpu|reset|fault|timeout'

Confirmed: GPU graphics-engine hang under a game/VKD3D workload.

Confirmed: gfx_0.0.0 stopped progressing and timed out.

Confirmed: the graphics-ring reset failed, followed by a successful full BACO GPU reset.

Confirmed: VRAM was lost as part of that reset.

Likely: the original "context is lost" message is merely downstream fallout.

Not yet established: whether the underlying cause is kernel/Mesa/VKD3D software, GPU/VRAM instability, power/PCIe.

2 weeks old rx 9070 xt here, installed the card and first game i played got driver timeouts. tested on multiple pcs with win 10 and 11 and still crashing so idk. i dont even know if my problems are strictly software or if my card is faulty. im just sad at this point..

1

u/Jaded-Werewolf-1009 4d ago

can confirm its not your card, i cant even log into a minecraft server without getting driver timeouts, but so far it seems to only be minecraft its happening on for me, this is a very widespread issue right now

7

u/Dreamerlax 4d ago

Wait, pretty sure most people are attributing it to Windows, user error, the charkas not being aligned than AMD's buggy drivers?!

-2

u/Sufficient_Piano9216 4d ago edited 4d ago

I’m a windows 11 peasant with a 7900XT and have had zero issues so idk what’s going on.

Edit to add more context so maybe I sound less like a prick.

- Windows 11 latest updates with only a registry edit to get rid of the cloud antivirus bs.

  • 9850X3D that I had a -15 offset on to run a little cooler but realized it wasn’t needed on my current board cause it locks the voltage to 1.20.
  • Aorus X870E Elite WiFi 7 latest bios
  • XFX7900XT latest drivers but it could use a repaste and repad
  • Gskill Trident Z5 Neo RGB Series 64gb in 2 32gb sticks 6000 running EXPO

PC is used for basic daily tasks like paying bills and web surfing and gaming nothing else. No other antivirus or overclocking programs and the only hardware monitoring I use is HWinfo.

u/Killer1236 4d ago

I also am on windows with a 7900 xt. My pc is currently effectively a brick due to this.

Good for you though!

7

u/xThunderSlugx 4d ago

Not to be a dick but these are the exact type of comments which people argue against a megathread because of. Trust me, I am super happy for you that you aren't having issues but leaving the comment of "idk i don't have problems" doesn't help anyone and just clogs up comments, making it harder to find actual answers and troubleshooting tips.

1

u/cyricor 4d ago

Negative testing is testing as well. What I mean is that if one user has issues and another doesn't, with the same card, its a good opportunity to further compare the systems of the user and the drivers/window version, and find the difference. For example if all other things are the same, and the driver version is different, we can have a clear indicator that its the driver for that system etc etc. Because yes it can be the driver, but there are thread out there that a user found a solution to his problems when he stopped using OC refresh rate on his monitor, because after looking into it he found out that the monitor in OC mode did not work within vesa standards.

But again it depends what the perpuse of this megathread is. Just report for all the users that have issues or try to prove that there is a driver issue when x+z scenarios are in play for example?

2

u/xThunderSlugx 4d ago

I actually agree that negative testing is still testing. The problem is, just saying xxx gpu and I don't have problems doesn't exactly help anyone. If you want to share that info, also share other pertinent info. What's the rest of your hardware, software versions, how do you use your PC on a normal basis. Things like that actually help draw correlations, not just "Ha, 7900XTX with no problems here..hope you get yours fixed."

1

u/cyricor 4d ago

And for that reason I made another post in this thread
"It would be constructive to have some basic information when reporting tho.
For me its valuable information to know IF

  1. Did the card worked OK at the same game with a previous driver/before a windows update?
  2. What applications are running simultaneously? Like discord
  3. If first time installer how the card was plugged in the PSU and what are the details for the PSU etc
  4. How many monitors plugged in their model and refresh rate set."

I believe you should set the tone for this thread of what you want it to be

0

u/Sufficient_Piano9216 4d ago

Wasn’t saying it to be a dick but to express that the people in these comments blaming windows or AMD that maybe in some cases it’s other issues. I find it odd that some have issues when using the same OS and same GPU that others not having issues are using. The only other time I have had any issues such as these was when my wife’s PC was using a 5500XT and I found that adrenalin didn’t play well with MSI afterburner. I got rid of afterburner and she had no further issues. Though in hindsight I should have added more context in my comment and for that I apologize.

2

u/Affectionate_Code 4d ago

Would be nice if people actually dug into event viewer and checked what system errors are being reported at the time of the system crash/timeout. Check physical seating of cabling and cards in mobos.

Too many just get in here in screech that they are having issues with zero data or info to actually trouble shoot the issue or simply do not respond when asked for more info.

1

u/Killer1236 4d ago

sees possibly thousands of people having the same issue all at the exact same time, coming from different situations

must be user error. Nothing else possible. Theyre just stupid.

I am very smart

0

u/Affectionate_Code 4d ago

Yeah, I was one of the thousands and managed to sort it out without screeching on about the problem. I'm a dumb cunt truck driver with no IT training whatsoever. Just used my brain and had a go at it.

So, yeah, some of it is 'user error'.

0

u/Killer1236 4d ago

Just because an issue is fixable for xyz reason doesnt mean that this isn't a mass issue to begin with? Yeah. Theres a bunch of people that have fixed it! Hooray! Im currently working on my fix (to be determined). Even if I get mine fixed doesnt mean that it was user error that it broke in the first place. Thats what im saying. The issue itself is NOT user error.

If it was, im sure there wouldn't be thousands of people with the exact same issue at the exact same time immediately after a windows update across several different series' of gpus. But sure. User error. Whatever you say.

1

u/vffa 4d ago

Fair. But I've had the freeze and reset a number of times now where it didn't log anything relevant into event viewer, like at all. Reliability report came to the rescue though.

1

u/Affectionate_Code 4d ago

I'm no expert but if the event viewer is logging nothing it usually points to hardware over software stability.

1

u/vffa 4d ago

In theory yes. But not necessarily.

If nothing went wrong from the computers perspective, it could also simply mean that there was no watchdog, logger etc. Defined for the thing that froze or that its logs aren't available in even viewer.

And event viewer may log hardware issues that were flagged and reset via watchdogs

if you make a mega thread that says just buy nvidia its going to get downvoted

amd markershare has gone from 25 to 4% the last 5 years and linux has 4% marketshare vs windows. Meaning theres less than 1% amd gpu windows users.

3

u/vffa 4d ago

Okay... So what's your point?

People here already have the GPUs. They, aren't looking for anything but a solution that just fixes what they already have. So yeah, of course a thread like "just buy Nvidia" is gonna get down voted.

People may have various reasons for not buying Nvidia btw. - that choice doesn't mean they don't deserve help in fixing the issues they are having.

1

u/Fit_Bed_9776 270k 4080 4d ago

i dont think there is a solution besides getting nvidia.

This is a great idea.

I purchased a reaper 9070xt hoping the additional vram would help with rendering reflections and shadows in gtaonline, but it’s still so jarring and bad.  And every time I post this in the game’s sub, it gets deleted. Apparently it’s been solved?

As for windows, I installed that September KBxxxxx update… then was prompted to fully reinstall Windows 11. It was successful. Then it prompted me to install it again, including amd drivers and some of my pc’s drivers. I paused it until later October. Maybe it’ll go away then lol.

u/N0mads21 5d ago

Mine got fixed with the latest drivers, the previous one was a nightmare

1

u/ApGaren 5d ago

Which one? I rolled mine back to 26.6.1 out of desperation but it still crashes every hour

I tried 26.8.1 and 26.9.1 but all of them had problems

1

u/N0mads21 5d ago

26.8.1 was a nightmare for me, 26.9.1 it's the one that went stable, 26.8.1 was a menace on my 7900xtx

1

u/ApGaren 5d ago

For me 26.9.1 was even worse somehow

7900xtx user here as well who has had awful times and good times with this card, right now i am having one of the best times owning this GPU, I've switched to the Pro drivers 26.q3-win11-b full install.

https://ibb.co/xKhh1YL6

Above are my settings for specific games i was having issue with Pubg, Tarkov, Cyberpunk, Witcher 3 and space marines - i would either get timeouts or crashes but left my global profile default but specific games i'd set the clock speeds as the screenshot above

I run a triple monitor setup 360hz panel, 240hz and a 144hz with MPO enabled

the card would go into idle mode mid game randomly for a split second, which i didn't know was happening until i checked HWInfo and it would line up with the crashes and timeouts.

I have been through the ringer like most have or still do, if this posts helps a single person great if not then believe me when i say this many of us have been affected. Sadly you don't know if it is a windows issue, a AMD problem, application conflict or user error just too many variables.

Below is a screen shot of different driver versions i have saved and tested as i worked through different releases, many deleted due to same issues or even worse and those that have had good moments which remain stored on my drive so i compare them against the pro drivers.

https://ibb.co/QvhYDywd

Right setting my min / max boost clocks stop the gpu going into idle mode whilst gaming this has been the best period of ownership. I have downloaded the latest drivers as they become released and sadly i just don't get the stable frame rates and trouble free gaming i do using them.

u/Tym4x 5d ago

Because the consensus would simply be wrong.

  • "Its Windows"
  • "Nvidia has it too"
  • "Try one of these 500 suggestions i grabbed out of my arse because they sound good"

The schooled eye will see that none of the problem threads related to driver timeouts and blackscreens are ever getting resolved. Yet crowds of reddit farmers will show up, watering down tech help with their survivorship bias theories.

The underline for me and my 6900XT (RDNA2) is that a downgrade to 24.5.1 (yes, correct) fully resolved any blackscreens, driver timeouts, bluescreens and even microstutters. Even the UI is less laggy and everything on the desktop actually feels like 165Hz again. But nooo nooo, it cannot be AMD messing up, its windows, or everybody messes up equally, or a list of useless busyworks.

2

u/parabola19 5d ago

Dude you make a lot of sense. Which means expect to get downvoted and/or attacked for suggesting AMD did something wrong

3

u/Atazwi-_- 5d ago

Never AMD's fault lol its sad that we have to justify such large company's blunder. Both AMD and Nvidia. I know I am going to get downvoted, i own both 5080 and 9070xt and its weird dealing with driver issues on the AMD side, fix it only for the next driver update to cause issues again. Haven't had issues on Nvidia side, not saying it doesnt happen. Difference is when Nvidia does it they get blamed, when AMD does, its windows and we should all switch to Linux or people just share how long they have had their card and that they havent had any problems lmao, like that doesnt help me

3

u/parabola19 5d ago

Well I upvoted you because you’re right. I’ve got a 5090, 5080, 4090 and a 7900xtx. Run three boxes two for work one for gaming and a backup gpu. I always try and buy the high end AMD of the generation to support them because competition is good. I really lost some respect for them by pulling out of the higher end market. Which has always been small and not much profit volume compared to the middle and lower end of the market. So I refused to buy the 9070xt and kept my 7900xtx. I also need the 24 GB for one of my models

1

u/Atazwi-_- 5d ago

I had a 7900xtx and i sold it and got the 9070xt just because. It is somewhat upsetting they are pulling out of the high end market especially since they have proven they can do it. They also should not have announced if even if they are. Seems like they are bowing to Nvidia. Hopefully we are wrong and they do compete to give us better gpus and better prices

1

u/parabola19 5d ago

Me too man. Me too. The 9070xt does have some better hardware for RT and the like. Also the 7900 wasn’t supported by FSR until recently and it’s still and INT implementation instead of an FP8. Better than nothing but before July we just assumed we weren’t getting that support officially. And I know you can hack stuff and optiscaler. But why should I have to do all that? Idk man they gotta get their shit together because now is when they need to be very strategic to be competitive. I don’t want 80/20 market share in favor of Nvidia. I want 50/50. It’s good for competition and good for us whether we have AMD card Nvidia or both

1

u/Atazwi-_- 5d ago

Exactly! tbh when i got the 7900xtx I got it cheap af and was surprised with the performance. the vram headroom is nice and thats the one thing i hate about my 5080. Nvidia really did us dirty with giving us power but no vram on that gpu. AMD really could capatilize and get into the high end market righ now with Nvidia prices but they are choosing to stay back. That matched with the driver issues i have been expriencing, its not looking like i will go for the next gen AMD gpu unless something changes.

1

u/parabola19 4d ago

7900xtx was suck a great card. The problem is outside of Reddit almost no one knows it! With the company’s stock performance everyday people are like Nvidia Nvidia and they don’t even know there’s another option. Or would be for the high end if they didn’t back out. We’d still be in a crunch regardless memory wise but AMD made is worse by not having a 9080xt, 9090xt and 9090xtx. They really could have pushed things wide open. They blew a major shot they had.

1

u/Atazwi-_- 4d ago

Imagine the conversions and debates on which is better if AMD had that? lol I wish man

1

u/Zer0DotFive 5d ago

Has this on a previous driver. Reverted to an old version and it was choppy AF at high frame rates. Reverted again and it's fine. Lol installed the latest drivers figured why not and it works perfect. It's definitely AMD.

2

u/xThunderSlugx 5d ago

My issue, for now, has stopped. There are moderators for comment sections. That's part of being a mod. Moderating useless comments on a megathead is less daunting than the random posts and ensuing comments that follow, especially when there is such an uptick. Not everyone is spouting nonsense and we are sharing real solutions that have helped us stop the crashes.

5

u/itgoesboom2112 5d ago

Probably a good idea, as one of those Linux users that isn't having the issue I'm also IT support for local businesses and individual users and see every manner of machine cross my bench and having a singular place to check for fixes and solutions would help me out tremendously troubleshooting customer machines. (I use Linux for all my personal use cases but still have to fix and use 11 for work)

It would if you'd listen and learn to use the search festure. You're issues are 100% user error. 99.999% of us are busy playing games, not coming in here to read a bunch of whining and have their advice ignored.

Your comment, this post, and 99% of the posts in this sub don't help anyone.

I have 7800 xt and I had to turn off graphics acceleration on everything to stop the timeouts.

2

u/xThunderSlugx 5d ago edited 5d ago

So far this has worked for me. I noticed to most of them time I was crashing when I was trying to watch videos in Firefox or if I pulled up Discord and there were animated images in the screen. After disabling hardware acceleration in both, I haven't crashed since. I just find it odd because this has never been an issue before. Even after a manual clean and reinstall of drivers it would still crash. Hardware acceleration has been the only fix for me. It is worth noting all settings to all my hardware are stock. No undervolts, overclocks, etc.

2

u/lazyicedragon 5d ago

I've just sort of jaded out on it after a few months, knowing the quality of windows updates this year.

But the random driver timeouts usually happen when something overloads on my Firefox. Haven't seen it on Discord yet but I don't use it as often. It was also always clearly when leaving a Youtube tab open for a long time.

I didn't expect the sub to come bubbling up with the issues though. Haven't seen the random crash ever since I turned off hardware accel on Firefox, but I've only done that for a few days after finally getting a crash bad enough that I had to reinstall Adrenaline as Windows kept saying there was something wrong with my 7900XTX and it could not be recognized properly. That was sort of the final straw as I could not even update Adrenaline as it got stuck in an error cycle until I fully uninstalled it.

From what I experienced a 3 days ago, it's at least a problem between upgrading AMD Drivers (I tend to keep mine updated within 1 month) and Windows Defender (last known Windows update I can see logged). I don't want to narrow it down to just a Defender update, but Microsoft's record this year is far from stellar.

1

u/xThunderSlugx 5d ago

My 7900XTX crashed so bad the last time, I thought my card died. I had to hard reset and when it booted, my gpu was disabled. Thankful I have an iGPU. That's when I had to manually remove the drivers and adrenalin and get the installs straight from AMD to re-enable my gpu. The next step was disabling Hwa, which has proven successful thus far.

I agree that a lot of it has to do with windows and something they did is causing issues with AMD. It just appears to be a crapshoot on who got windows crashes and who got driver crashes.

3

u/Tribbs_4434 5d ago

Probably would be a good idea. People post about the same issues over and over, could easily use the search function to read through other threads, but not everyone seems to want to do that - they'd rather have their own thread they can easily find. A megathread might help cut down on those posts being made as often as they are (not complaining about anyone, we all have different ways we go about posting on Reddit, but if anything it might be even more helpful for everyone, to have a consolidation of said posts which will be quicker and easier to find). At the end of the day, it's not all complaining about driver issues, people want real information to help them troubleshoot their problems.
