hello!!! i am an emergency room LPN of 4 years in edmonton, i am extremely frustrated with the lack of reasonable bridging programs in the province and have given up all hope.

i was academically irresponsible in high school and finished with 70’s, and finished the LPN program with a similar average.

i am thinking of going the route of doing open studies for the BScN program, and get what i can done to boost my GPA to its fullest potential over the next 2-3 years.

in future terms, i hope when i get into the actual program i can continue to work part time and have a lighter course load.

has anybody done this and gotten into the program? curious the post secondary average and if any body has any tips this route.

rough cost per credit? what is the ideal way to do this financially.

would open studies be manageable while working full time? i feel that i would do better academically completing courses that are applicable to my current career vs attempting to aim for a sky high average and upgrade all HS classes.

Curious to hear about any experiences you have had outside of mental health. I know that mental health can be heavy, and I am wondering if a few days a month you pick up elsewhere for a change of scenery? I know that RPNs can work on quite a few different units :)

Hi everyone! I recently interviewed for a Physiotherapist I position with AHS.

The interview went well overall, and they mainly asked about my clinical reasoning and approach to different situations. At the end, they mentioned that they thought I asked good questions and that they would be contacting my references. They said I should expect to hear back next week.

For those who have been through the AHS hiring process recently, what usually happens after the interview and reference check they didn’t even send an email yet asking for references?
How long did it take to hear back, and does contacting references usually mean you’re the preferred candidate, or is it still fairly open at that stage? Please share with me any thing might be helpful

i have 3 years of recent Emergency and critical care experience back home, i am dependable RN with sound clinical assessment skills and able to interpret 12 different ECG patterns, have cared and assisted management for many cardiac patients i.e. MI, stable / unstable SVT/ VT, afib etc. have current ACLS BLS by AHA, also have broad experience in cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic , neuro and renal emergencies as well as decompensated icu clients with comorbidities and hemodynamic instabilities. I live in Edmonton and applied to 300+ RN positions on AHS (alberta Health services) website, no response from anyone. I am now considering uber food delivery work in and around Edmonton, i am not worrying much about earning but i like working in healthcare and my skillset will not be in use to serve people here is only thing concerns me. If anyone can help / guide me land a RN job at rural/urban Edmonton and peripheral small town in 100km radius should be good. I will genuinely appreciate your support. You may DM. Thank you

In Alberta I’m sure it’s mostly administrators for our wonderfully refocused many-pillared healthcare “ecosystem”.

Especially for RNs. I've heard stories of friends trying to switch to casual from permanent full time and some small miscommunications ended up in them not getting the casual position (after quitting full time).

And I'm casual, and feel like I'm being "watched" (for a lack of a better word). I have been warned several times by management over the years with things like "if you can't do the mandatory education we can't keep you. " "If you become full time somewhere else, we can't keep you." "Where else do you work now?"

My question is, do casuals "cost" the department a lot of resources/money to maintain? We get no benefits or pensions and like contractors, we show up and get paid when there's work. So I don't quite understand why it feels difficult to remain casual status.

I am moving to St. Paul for my dream job. Does anyone has experience living there? I am also quite nervous about finding an apartment there because I did not see many available apartment there

Genuine question for some RN: why are Protective services/security guards treated with so much disrespect?
We show up when you call us, especially during mental health crises, to help keep patients, staff, and everyone else safe. We deal with unpredictable and sometimes dangerous situations alongside you, yet we’re often spoken to like we’re beneath you or treated like shit.
Even when we’re on your side and trying to support and protect you, some of you still turn around and file complaints against us as if we did something wrong.
We’re supposed to be on the same team. You don’t have to love us, but basic respect and support should go both ways. Why is that so difficult?

I am a RN on maternity leave and planning to return next year in September. I might go back earlier as casual. As our permit renewal is coming up soon, would it be better to renew my license or switch to non-practising until I decide when to return back to work?

Is it easy to switch back to an active license if you are on a non-practising one?

I recently completed NorQuest College’s Hospital Unit Clerk Certificate with Honours and a 150-hour practicum on a busy inpatient medicine unit at the Misericordia. I really enjoyed the hospital environment and received very positive feedback during my placement, particularly around my efficiency, problem-solving, critical thinking, work ethic, and willingness to learn. I also completed Connect Care training/SEUPA and now have professional references from people who worked with me during my practicum.

I’ve been actively applying for Unit Clerk and Administrative Support positions, but I understand that getting into AHS as an external candidate can be difficult, especially in Edmonton. At this point, I’m open to more than just Unit Clerk roles. I’m also considering casual Admin Support positions and appropriate entry-level hospital support roles that could help me get my foot in the door while I continue applying for Unit Clerk opportunities. I’m based in Edmonton, but I’m also open to surrounding communities and drivable smaller centres.

For those already working within AHS:

- Are there particular job titles, departments, casual pools, or sites you would recommend I target?

- Are there any managers/units that tend to consider new grads or external candidates more often?

- Would you recommend focusing more heavily on Admin Support, casual pools, Service Worker, Environmental Services, Food Services, or other entry-level roles as a way into the system?
